25% I can sorta agree with, the rest is a joke.
Way too many guitar players there who are what I call "effects" players who rely on effects racks/pedals for their sound.
Pleased to see Joan Jett in there though. Not a blazing soloist or anything but she always played great rhythm guitar. Smiling to see Glen Buxton there too, he and Michael Bruce are heroes of mine.
-
That list is a fuckin joke I know a ton of people that can smoke half that list
-
I personally found it interesting that #12 was better than 14 and 15, that 17 was better than 27 and 31, and that 33 and 34 were better than anybody. I agree, though. Lousy list.
-
No John Williams? Great guitarist.
Even stranger for a rock publication, no Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. Effects players, I know, but they spank the plank as good as any of those guys, if not better. EVH at #70, wtf???
-
Yep, no John William (wtf?!) Vai and Satriani being missing is pretty criminal!
When I bitched about "effects players" I was having a pop about guys like Tom Morello, Edge, Thurston Moore etc who've got more effects and tricks running than playing ability.
I use a handful of boxes here and there so I'm not anti-effects )
Think to be honest the whole list runs alongside record sales and people's influences list.
I wonder how much higher on the list Jack White would be if he got a guitar tuner? (miaow!) haha
-
That list isnt even humorous. Just reminds me why I never read Rolling Stone.
-
WHERE THE FUCK IS BRIAN SETZER!?! HOW THE FUCK DO YOU MAKE A LIST LIKE THIS AND PLACE 90% OF THOSE PEOPLE ON IT AND NOT HAVE SETZER!?! FUCKING JOHNNY RAMONE, BUT NO SETZER!!!
Nice to see that Cliff Galup and Eddie Cochran got onto the list, but so damn far down is fucking ridiculous! To compare them to a contemporary of theirs, both Cliff and Eddie SMOKE fucking Chuck Berry!
I'll have to look again, but I do believe that they left Chet Atkins off of that list, and Chet could out-play EVERYBODY on that friggin' thing!
If this was an "influential" list, maybe I could agree with more of these people, but then you shouldn't have people like fucking Jack White on it!
Fucking no fucking Setzer just shows that people don't understand what it takes to play guitar. Over half the people on that list could NEVER play on a clean channel and be as crystal clear and dead on perfect as Brian. Fuck, Hendrix sure never would be able to do it. Fucking idiots.
-
Oh, and to show all of us just how soon our style of music will ever be popular again, Eddie Van Halen is number 70!!! The man responsible for every friggin band who was in the 80's, and who redefined rock guitar, who was more popular than Hendrix could ever dream of having been in their primes (and Eddie could PLAY!!!), and he get placed at number 70!!! Yet, the amazing Jack White is at 17!!! Kurt Cobain is at 12. BB King admits to NOT being any good at rythym. I don't care if you are a GREAT rythym guitarist, if you can't play lead (and vice versa), then you can't be a "Greatest Guitarist".
-
Fucking hell, no Michael Hedges even!?!
-
Why is Jack White on this list at all? Why are the White Stripes even on the radio?
This is gonna be another Nirvana thing isn't it? They aren't gonna go away. And I'm gonna have to blow someone up.
-
I agree it is criminal that EVH is #70.
It's a real shame that he's not gonna last much longer, with the cancer thing he's got going on. Too many Marlboro. That will be a sad loss. He's been so innovative and influential.
-
Last I heard his health was improving. Sure, there are the conflicting reports of the "he is still a drunk" and "he is sober", but I haven't heard anything about the cancer in awhile and last heard they got it taken care of and that he was in remission. Has something come about recently?
-
Oops, just read that he got a 100% all-clear!!!
Does anyone know whats going on with him?
-
This list is really sad and Carl Setzer was the first one I thought of as well and kept waiting for his name to show up and couldn't believe that it never did.Others that I thought were glaring ommisions (at least IMHO) Reeves Gabriel (later Bowie),James Dean Bradfield (Manics although not suprising in a US Publication), Slash (although not much of a fan he is a talent),Steve Jones (I mean if you are going to put Johnnie Ramone)CC Deville (Just kidding but I don't think anyone reads this shit anyway.) In my own very biased list I would have added Marco Perroni (Adam Ant/Bow Wow Wow), Andy Summers (The Police),Andy McCoy , Warren Cucarillo (Missing Persons/later Duran Duran) , Johnny Marr (Smiths/The The/Healers) and Johnny Thunders.

Oh well yeah, I mean Thunders would be on my list WAY before 80% of that list!!!
-
Hendrix at No. 1????
Give me a break....He couldn't play worth a damn....and Jimmy Paige couln't either.
What happend to Nuno Bettencourt, Andy Timmons, Macy Malone, Jerry Vayne????
Now those are great guitarist!!!!!!!
-
YEAH!!! And where the hell am I dammit!?!
-
Yeah wheres CArl on the list
-
Obviously along with the REAL great guitarists... he was overlooked.
-
Warren Cucarillo - Don't forget that Warren was also with Zappa. He even gets name mention on the "Joe's Garage" album in the song "Catholic Girls".
Not so sure about Thunders. I love the guy, but he REALLY sucked quite often. Johnny could be great, but he could also not know a damn thing about staying in key! LOL!!! I see him like Richards, cool guitarists, but I am not so sure about how great they were. Yeah, style counts, but it ain't so hard to play what they play. Setzer might also be "just a rock and roll" guitarist, but what he does is also REALLY fucking hard to play, especially for as clean as he is.
-
Yeah Carl I agree about Thunders,I was just saying if I had a completely biased list with the same apparent criteria as Rollingstone's list (influences etc.)I would add him...actually it would be hard to come up with 100 so UI'd probably add him twice.
