i got a chance to check out the 21" A-ziljian sweet ride the other day and was amazed at it's versatility. it's a conventional A zildjian, and usually i don't like A zildjians except for maybe the hats, but this ride was amazing! great bell, crash, definition. it seemed like an all around ride. is it only me or anyone else have the same feeling?
any insights would be appreciated. i'm thinking of picking this guy up.
it doesn't have the stick definition i need to play jazz. a little too washy for me too. but it's dicenso's favorite ride. i like your k custom MUCH better.

i noticed there were 2 sweet rides. (no 2 zildjians are the same - there's pros and cons to that )so i checked out the one that was weightier. cuz i was thinking that it has the potential to be too washy, much like my crash / ride. i feel the my k custom doesn't have enough crashability. meaning it's too dry. i love it for fusion and funk but i wanted to something to crash/ride on when i rock out as well as have it sing when i play ballads.
anyway, i used a 5b and an 8a sticks. the definition was there with both stick sizes. 8a was great when i played some swing and the 5b actually had definition though washier and louder.
i ended up liking the heavier of the 2 rides. it's much like a rock ride except that it was tad more versatile.
i didn't know dicenso played that ride. that's good to know. perhaps my ear for cymbals is changing / evolving? heheheh....we'll see.

I played a house kit a while back that had a 21" Sweet Ride. I thought it had the sophistication of a K, which is cool. It sounded beautiful on its own, but it really didn't fit well with the music style or volume (more of a rock context). It did lack some of the stick definition and volume you would expect from an A. was a little weaker than I would have guessed for a cymbal of that weight. It would be nice if they made something like a "Heavy Sweet Ride" or at least a 21" or 22" Deep Ride.
I've been in a frame of mind for years that "real" drummers have a taste for K's and A-Customs, but regular A's are for the less-refined drummer. (That said, I play a 21" Rock Ride that I've had for many moons [img]redface.gif[/img] .) However, recently, I've been digging some older recordings with A cymbals (e.g. Vinnie on "Joe's Garage," Lenny on the RTF and Al DiMeola albums, Gregg with Brandon Fields, etc.)
Yeah, DiCenso (who immediately made my list of favorite players) lists the Sweet Ride in his setup, but it sounds more like a Ping or Rock ride.
PS - Randy's mention of the old Pang reminded my of my tour of a music shop in Arkansas a few years ago. They had a perfectly preserved, brand new 20" Pang that had the old "hollow" Zildjian logo on it. Judging from the amount of activity in that town, it's probably still there! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Wow, the timing of this post is incredible. I'm on the hunt for a new ride. However, I really want to add a 22" this time. I have an OLD A Medium which is great for jazz, Ping, and K Custom Special Dry. I've played about 20 rides and am leaning to the 22" K Custom Ride, Medium Ride, and Dry Light Ride. I know, they are all very different, but as we all know, every cymbal is so different.
I'll be spending time at Pro Drums in Hollywood tomorrow (Sat).
Anyone that wants to join, ring my mobile.

Got my new 22" ride today, 4 stores and 20 cymbals later. First started at Pro Drums in Hollywood and tried a some K Custom Special Dry Light rides, Paiste Signature Full (20"), Sabian Manhattan, and a few other Ks, but didn't like any of them. The Paise is a cool ride, but not what I'm looking for at this time.
Then off to GC Hollywood. They didn't have anything. Off the Black Water, where they didn't have much at all. And finally back to WLA music where I looked at their stock earlier this week.
I knew it was down to the 22" K, K Custom, and K Custom Medium. I also brough some of my cymbals to check the balance and compare. First I setup my Ping to compare the rides. The Ping sounded so bad compared to all three! Then I setup my 14" K Custom Dark hihats, 16" Session crash, and 18" K Dark Medium Thin crash.
The K Ride was the first to be kicked off the island. It was down to the K Custom and K Custom Medium. I setup both rides, hihats, and the 18" crash and compared the blend.
In the end, I selected the K Custom Medium ride. It really blended best with this mix of cymbals. The K Custom Ride sounded great, but just sounded "out of the family" compared to the Medium.
So there you go. My Saturday adventure, and now proud owner of the 22" Zildjian K Custom Medium ride. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

During my ride search, both Bisstoneet and John Ferraro told me to look for the Zildjian K ride Weckl developed in the mid 90s.
Does anybody know which model that is?

There was a real nice ride on the bottom, was it the special one? It was a bit to dry though. I would assume they're referring to the Pre-Aged K ride? I seem to remember ads with Ersko and Weckl for that one.

I got to play a 20 K custom ride when I was in London. It came with the rental kit. I kinda liked it. It was a good ride for my kinda music i think cuz no matter how hard i hit it it wouldnt wash out and the definition was there. When i was playing an acoustic set i made the mistake of lightly crashing on it.. ugh... the worst crash sound out of a ride ever (except for my ZBT maybe... haha)
well anyway.
You mentioned the HHX Manhatten Jazz Ride but what did it sound like? I'm trying to decide on a new ride right now.
I play rock and often times have to hit pretty hard. I have a ZBT ride right now and that seems to be fine where its washing but not enough to annoy me. The thing is that we do a lotta jamming stuff and id like to have a ride i can use for that and also for jazz gigs that I wish I had. Having a nice bell would be a real plus too. I would like a ride with excellent crash qualities as well because i wasnt to do that jazz accent on the ride thing and also when vinnie plays the ride on its side to create the riding ont he crash ish sound. im looking at either the HHX manhatten, the K or the K preage dry light . any thoughts? Im leaning on the manhatten but purely based on audio samples. I dont have any music stores that stock em.
(also im looking for a pair of 13 inch hats... im looking at HHX groove hats or K masters... any thoughts? Again rock stuff but i like doing alotta hi hat embeleshments and also need solid chicks to drive the band and keep em together. )

to add to derek's response, i believe it also could've been the k-custom medium. the ride that had lathing only on the top and not the bottom. i have that ride, and it's great. i guess i wanted more wash than the k-custom mediums. i don't know if they still make these anymore.

danny, was your k-custom medium, lathed on the top and not the bottom? if so, then i guess it's still being made, huh?
btw - my wife got me 'bring on the night' dvd for my birthday, and i totally forgot that omar seemed to be using all A- zildjian cymbals. maaaaan they sounded great! it reminded of how you said that the old A's were similar to K's but not as dark. judging by the video, i see what you mean. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I just picked up the video too! Watched part of it.
The K Custom Medium I got is "normal" on the top, and almost looks like a briliant finish, smooth, on the bottom. The 22" really makes a big difference.
As far as the HHX Manhattan, it was nice but too washy for what I was looking for. Similar to the K Const. with very good crashing.
