You sure it wasn't for a 5.0 litre or something?
I had heard of the kit, but thought it was still prototype only and not available. I also thought the units they installed on a Civic blew up the engines?
I remember reading Vortech supercharger info somewhere before.. And someone also commented about the PS pump issue..
Isn't the Vortech supercharger a centrifugal (sp?) type of design? That means it has lags just like turbos? That translates to that JR has better low-end torque / response (well..theoretically).
But the overall benefit is greater on the Vortech unit (IMO) compared to JR. It has the ability for adapting a intercooler, has better efficiency with higher blower speed, and that BOV currently only available on turbo'd integras (call me ricey http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif).
But, if it is so similar to a turbo, why getting it but a turbo????? http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
PS. I have no intention and please don't turn this into a turbo vs SC debate. Thanks!

cpa: Well, they're promoting them to performance shops, so they probably aren't far from market.
aflack: That 500+hp capability is for the compressor only, not the kit or what the honda engine it's strapped onto will put out.
If you hop onto www.vortechsuperchargers.com you can check out on their homepage a Civic with the SC. I emailed them for info and got a quick response. So far they are working on a GS-R kit and they haven't started on a LS one yet http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif The vortech system uses a air to water aftercooler from my brief emailings http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hybrid EG: It won't have lag like a turbo because it is driven off the crankshaft, not the exhaust. However, it will not have the low end torque of a JRSC because it is not a positive displacement compressor (i.e. It gets more efficient at higher speeds).
As far as blowing up engines, anybody can blow up anything with just a few human errors. The SCC staff seems quite adept at this.

LOL....this is so true greg... http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Why is it that every time someone mentions the Vortech SC someone else always brings up the civic with the burned-up engine? Yes, they did burn up one of their own engines but, they did not blow it up. I believe it was SCC who ran the car most of a day wide open and found that the fuel set-up on it was not able to handle that type of use and it burned up. Now, how many engines have Honda engines have been blown by turbos, nitrous, or even the JRSC( Does tip in detonation ring any bells)? Quit tyring to knock a manufacturer for having a faulty prototype and support their efforts to create more competition in the market. At least Vortec does not seem to be using cutomers cars to find out what kind of adaptations and upgrades they need to make to their real world systems(BTM).
I just hope that their system does turn out to be a viable option of FI for our cars.

Alright, I probably shouldn't have said it http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/redface.gif and yes, engines get blown up for a lot of reasons, but it wasn't an intent to flame. Vortech obviously has experience in the industry. I agree that more options are better and I'm all for it. I guess it was a response to how I've heard it marketed, particularly the "500 hp capable" figure. The dealer I've talked to that is familiar with it is also skeptical about its expected availability given the way its been presented and the results of its tests so far. That doesn't mean it will not happen or that it will not be a good product.
I agree that the "500hp" portion of the brochure will likely mislead people who don't understand what they're saying.
Maybe they should've said, "This compressor can blow more air than your Honda engine could ever swallow!".

If you happen to be online, any chance you could respond to the question I posted in the advanced "engine timing thread"?
i talked to vortech si, who i guess works at vortech on clubsi.com, he basically told me that the SI kit will be available soon, and the integra GSR kit later on in the 01 year or something, i asked about an ITR kit, and he said theres no plans for it, but that it should be similar to the SI kit.......
From the pic of the SI on their site it seems the PS pump is still in its regular place, at least the PS line is still leading there.. so the pump is either under that shielding or it's been disconnected altogether.
civic teaser page
Is it a possibility that they replace the PS pump assembly with another unit that integrates the SC pulley into it?
Also, in terms of compatibility, what would the main issues be with regards to cross-over from one 'teg kit to another? is there an engine/fuel management component that would have to be specific to model? or would it just be piping placement/mounting?
just wondering..

Did he say anything else about the setup how much boost, fuel setings, anything?? I have know about the VS for a while and when I call them for info they just pushed me off. Oh well I hope someone gets one soon so we can see the differance?
thanks

Nice thread gang, but a little clarification. Both a JRSC and the Vortech are Positive displacement, the difference being the Vortech is a Centrifugal compressor with design more similar to the internals of a turbo, the difference being the turbo spools-up on increasing exhaust driving the impeller where the vortech and similar units gear-up using a step-up larger drive/small driven gear. They do lag but you don't notice it on a V8, I suspect you will on the 1.6 VTEC, you may even have less torque out of the hole.
The JRSC is a screw compressor which uses reduced oulet size to compress the air within the blower case and the boost is linear with the displacement. ( BTW a roots blower, like a 6-71 is an External non-positive displacement compressor as the pressure is developed in the intake manifold.)
The Vortech looks like a nice unit, I've done A bunch of R and S trim units on various 5.0's and F-body GM's. Vortech make good equipment, well thought-out and complete. I already carry the Jackson line, looks like I'll set-up for these babys, too.

Here's my opinion on the Vortech kit. I saw it at an import event several months back. I wasn't too impressed. The install seems incredibly complex. I am not a fan of centrifugal superchargers in general. IMO, get a roots blower for the instant response otherwise get a turbo. There are a few advantages to centrifugal blowers but it's not my cup of tea. It is nice to see another SC kit out there to compete with JR though.
I have been told the Si kit is due out next month.

1997 Civic EX, Supercharged
I was hanging out at a local performance shop today and saw a brochure for the Vortech Supercharger kit.
Here are some comments:
1) It's about time JR had some competition!
2) They claim a 95hp increase. This sounds like the kit is either 6psi (if the intercooler works well) or 8psi. They don't say. Blow-off valves also promoted on the brochure mentioned 8psi. I don't know if these were upgrades or replacements.
3) The drive shaft is enclosed in a housing. Feel free to wear your neck ties!
4) The compressor (5G?) can flow (claimed by Vortech) enough to support over 500hp, so if the intercooler works well, this kit could handle serious upgrades.
5) Where the hell does the PS pump go? The pictures in the brochure clearly showed A/C lines, so the PS pump doesn't go there. My best guess is that they lower the alternator a la JR and put the PS pump where the nose of the JR blower ends up.
No pricing or availability info.
Anyone know anything else?

Greg,
Although I haven't seen the Vortex charger in person, I saw it in the ads from Velocity mag (I signed up for that $200 rebate from JR). From what I've seen in the pic (which seems to be a Type R engine, the power steering pump is still there..right underneat the Vortex (or whatever part of that charger).
The power steering pump is new... it is replaced because the jackshaft had to pass through the middle of it: so Vortech simply created a new P/S pump with a bearing to accomodate this.
SCC was bouncing the Si off the rev-limiter at sustained HIGH speeds... go try this with your car, and the results will probably be just like theirs.
