Sad news

I'm sorry to report the passing last night of Ron Spagnardi, founder and publisher of Modern Drummer Magazine. Ron died of cancer; this is all I know at the moment.

Ron, his wife, and all of the contributing editors, writers and readers of Modern Drummer established an incredible community for drumming and drummers over the years; Ron leaves a rich legacy, the likes of which we should all be grateful for.

He was a good friend to drumming, and I shall miss him.

He and his wife really united the drumming world with Modern Drummer. Unbelievable.

Very sad news. Modern Drummer magazine was groundbreaking and kept so many guy's connected to drumming and the world of music.

I did not know he was ill either, my prayers go out to his family.

Utterly shocked.

I can only hope I can have as great an effect on humanity in my life or do something great like Ron did with MD.

Wow, this news is shocking. I didn't know that he was sick either. Ron, what a great magazine you have created, and I always look forward to the new inspiration to play that I receive every month via my subscription to MD. My prayers go out to your family.

durn...sad news. Goodbye, Ron...great man who created a great magazine & helped the drumming community by a huge leap.

I guess we won't be seeing any tributes about the man on eMpTyV, V-Ate-1, or Beat-mE-meaT any time soon [I'm an Equal-Opportunity-Employer]... I mean, after all, he & his people have done WAY more for the drumming & music world than, say, many of those so-called shows & that so-called 'music' that could fill those networks' she-itehouses... [with the exception of maybe the BET Jazz (& funk/R&B/blues/motown) station]
He should get at least 1/2-to-1 hr. on each, but then, that probably just wouldn't sell enough of those f'n mass commercials, now, would it.... [img]graemlins/whatever.gif[/img] ...

You and MD were our common thread. I met Ron a couple of years ago at the Vancouver International Drum Festival. Class act. He loved drums.
Easily the founder of the recorded histories of this instrument(s).
I think we all know who should be the next Hall of Fame inductee.

Im gonna work on some of those crossover studies you have left with me!!

This is sad news...the passing of a great leader in our craft. Heartfelt prayers and sympathy to Ron's family and gratitude to him for his devotion to our field.

Very sad news.

I did not know him but I am glad that I picked this year to take my 2 sons to the MD fest. I remember thinking, what a real class thing when Ron and his wife walked through the line greeting people and shaking hands. At least the 3 of us got to say hello and shake his hand.

He will be missed.
