*** Zip's EBL Preview ***

JRSC people have been waiting to hear how Zip?s EBL is coming along. I?ve been using the EBL for a few weeks now and it works as advertised. Zip is still doing minor revisions on the programming, so I can?t say exactly when he?ll go into full production. It will be very soon though http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Components & Installation:

The boost controlling section of the EBL is installed near the bypass valve. In order to install the unit, the S/C needs to be lowered temporarily from the intake manifold to access the bypass bracket screws. The unit is mounted with a new supplied bracket. This wasn?t a problem for me since I had my S/C pulled for a gasket replacement. I also needed a longer heater hose to make clearance.
Of course there is the Brain. I highly suggest whoever is installing this have good knowledge with reading wires and soldering. There are a total of 16 ports but not everyone goes to the ECU. There are approx. 5 cut/splices and 2 taps to the ECU. The rest is for the boost controlling unit, beeper, power/ground. Lastly, you need to hook a vacuum line to the EBL MAP sensor.

Here are the features of the EBL and comments:

Auto Boost mode ? Easy to use. It?s selectable anywhere from 1-14PSI in 1lb increments. All you do is select how many pounds of boost you want to run and the controller takes care of the rest. Zip says the auto mode ?may? give a lower boost reading than set, but I didn?t notice any lower readings during my testing.

Manual Boost Mode - This mode is very accurate in controlling boost levels
because you manually enter the boost controlling regions with respect to
throttle position. The EBL reacts in four stages directly relating to the
position of the throttle position sensor. So basically, each stage will ramp
the bypass valve closed, with the 4th stage being what boost level you want
to achieve.

Scramble boost ? Self explanatory. With the hit of a button, you get full boost!! I?m trying to keep off that button until I hit the dyno. Very hard to resist. 

Digital Signal Processing Mode- This is the mode where you manipulate the ECU signals. Each mod is user selectable, so you can turn them on or off depending on your needs. You can also select when they will activate by reference of the EBL?s MAP sensor.

TPS Mod ? This is Rjaffey?s TPS trick, but with an improvement. The original trick worked off the JR pressure switch. This one works with the EBL?s built-in MAP sensor, so you can activate it anywhere, even before it sees boost, whereas the JR pressure switch triggered at 1 PSI.

MAP Mod - Modifies the MAP sensor voltage to richen the fuel mixture.

IAT Mod ? Replaces the JR fuel enrichment relay.
VTS Mod ? You can select Vtec engagement from 2500-5000 RPM in 500rpm increments. (I believe Zip is changing it to 100rpm increments) I have mine set at 4500 and it seems to pull stronger at WOT than when it engaged at 5500. I haven?t been to the dyno yet, so I can?t say for a fact which rpm is best for Vtec engagement. The nice thing about this mod is it only activates when you are at WOT, so regular driving is not affected.

AF Mod ? This is a safety feature which I experienced and must say is a plus. User selectable to warn when you are running lean. If the A/F ratio runs lower than what you selected it will give a warning beep. I had my rise rate too low and was running lean at WOT. Good call on adding this feature.

Valet Mode: Don?t want those punks beating on your ride? Put it in valet mode and you have zero boost.


So those are the features. I?m currently using manual boost mode since I like the adjustability. If you?re lazy then use the Auto mode. I just like to tweak http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif Since I?m using 310?s now, I?m not using the IAT mod or the MAP mod, but that?s my situation. I no longer have any tip-in detonation in any way. I think the combinations of mods provided should make tuning a lot easier for any JRSC.

I had the opportunity to take a brief ride in NuSiEr's car (thanks, man http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif) and can say that the EBL is a very nice piece.

The way Zip modulates the onset of boost is a very nice feature. You get a nice smooth transition instead of a sudden blast to maximum boost.

Actually, it can control traction if you know how to manipulate the different boost regions on the manual mode. Once traction is gained, hit the scrammble boost, and voila! I'm not taking away anything from TOO since I've never seen his boost controlling device. The EBL features is a collaboration from the ideas of Steven, NuSier, MrRogers, and many others over the past couple of months. The EBL is packed with features that will once and for all get rid of tip-in. The EBL will also help lower peak fuel pressures if all the fuel enrichment features are activated by the user. All the features are user programmable and activated.

All I can say it that unit is tight!!!! Zip is trully a master. When he was at DSR last summer doing testing on this unit everyone was totally blown away!!!! The unit looks like a total ECU in your dash that was professionaly built.

Hey Mike, the one you saw was really the old version. All that did was control and regulate boost. The new version is completely revamped with features requested by many members on this board and CSi. It doesn't come w/ the EIA-232 cable anymore since all the info is displayed on the LCD in real time.

BTW, how's Lawrence doing w/ the "program"? Last time I talked to him, he was still manipulating the timing and fuel maps.

The housing, LCD, and buttons have already been updated w/ a new look since these photos were taken about a month ago. I forgot to mention that John, of J&S, was also instrumental with this project. It uses the same MAP sensor as the ultra. Thanks John!

Can anyone speculate on whether this will be functional for the Prelude JRSC? I know the electronics should be the same, but I'm not sure about the bolt-in...

It's compatible with any JRSC setup that uses the M62 charger. Only the bracket for the boost controller is changed. Currently, it's only for the 99-00Si, 98-01 typeR and 94-01 GSR.

Bravo Zip you are amazing and a true engineering master. I give maaaaaad props to such a project as yours. Could you implement a traction control like Larry described where you limit boost based on the comparison of the front tire rotation speed to the rear easily by using the abs sensors? psudo code: x=rear rpm, y=front rpm, z=boost limit, if y>x then lower z until x=y for starters. Any news about making these units for Porche like you bragged about when you first prototyped the EBL? I used a PROM burner. Yes, custom programs and updates can actually be changed by swapping out the PROM chips.

90teg: I never said I was going to work on an EBL for porsche. I don't want to mess with the Motronics program they use. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/eek.gif I think you have it confused with the post I had about the Monster Cable visit I had at my father's work in which they asked me to install a HKS EBC on their Turbo S's. As for the traction control, I never implemented it into the EBL since my car, the Si, doesn't have anti-lock brakes. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif But as I mentioned above you can modulate boost regions during a drag launch and push the scrammble boost once traction is regained.

Oh I must have been on crack when you posted about the porche's, well your setup is bad-ass as is and looks very top-notch. I never liked the JRSC until I saw your EBL. I would rather get the JRSC with your setup than the *exclusive* ENDYN since your attitude has more credability than some grumpy old man and I KNOW you personally invented it yourself than a TEAM of hot head engineers. As soon as I get the funds, look forward to a very potential customer. Yep Zip is the designer/creator of the EBL. He is a electrial engineer by trade. Curious if you were going to go with a 68HC11 with on chip PROM or one where you had to build your PROM access and bus access on the side of the unit. Looks like you unitized it so you could replace parts that were needing upgrades easily. Did you use buffalo to program or another interface program Zip.
Thanks for the time, been working on my own nitrous controller and trying to get it to read wheel spin from the ABS sensing unit. Just trying to get the interface correct from the sensors giving me a problem.

The ECU Lawerence was working on is going in Friday with my injectors. The ECU has been done since Dec. We tested it on another R which showed killer gains. We wanted to put it on my car, but the encryption wasn't ready and we didn't want someone to steal the codes for it. Anyway, I'll post results Friday or Sat. with dynoplots, etc...

Sheepdog the boost controller does exist. I have a picture of the mechanical portion(flying eye?) of it. If you want me to e-mail it to you, just post your e-mail up.
