OK, hold on to your seats. I just got word Vinnie is in Nashville working with MEGADETH on a new cd. Dave Mustaine is back. There was a period where Mustaine had quit the band to do other things, but this is wild news.

Spinal tap next.....Who knows!
Now Heavy Metal!?!
Vinnie "the ultimate all-around drummer".
Next time what: klezmer Punk?
This will be good for Vinnie,
I think. You can't play too
many types of music.
I feel the same for Virgil,
hoping to hear more on this
side of the border.

Guys, this is nothing new for Vinnie. Remember he did the Queen of The Damned ST with Marilyn Manson and a few other hardcore rockers.
To me I am not surprised by this, Vinnie is the first guy to call. Especially if Dann Huff is behind the console.
Wow...
Actually I used to really like Megadeth when I was younger - I was a teenage guitarist before I got hooked on drums. I think they're pretty good at what they do - quite tight and precise. Their old drummer Nick Menza is the son of (famous jazz saxophonist) Don Menza... or so I heard.
Should be an interesting CD to check out!
Nick Menza interview anyone?
Menza interview!
<marquee>Vinnie to appear on sesame street............Vinnie eats Big bird at one meal!</marquee>
sorry.
Yeah, of course Vinnie'll kill that gig...he'll most likely underplay [by Vinnie standards, if i can say that ]...
Live promos w Mega? He'll have to take off his glasses [contacts?] & continue to wear all black, maybe sport a tat of a python or skull on a cross on his left bicep, & keep the buzz cut, & maybe wear some black military boots...
Next up for that gig: Weckl...& Virg [who would be the best candidate IMO - [not that VC & DW could'nt slam dunk it AW] & even tho he can bust a few, VC's forte is not DB like it is Virg's, tho...

...and dye his grays black, too, Fuse...
hey well vinnie had that black hoodie thing goin for sting.. maybe he's turning towards the dark side...
I would have expected them to call Minnemann or Lang, they seem more fitted for that kinda work LOL
But anyways like Randy pointed out, Vinnie & Bozzio ABSOLUTELY without a doubt DESTROYED the Queen of the Damned CD. I still remember when I first heard that, I was doing sum transcribing with a fellow student who's into all that modern hard rock crap like Limp Biskit, actually the band isn't really that bad, it's much more advanced, Ill Nino or something, I took that CD and handed out to him and the guy couldn't stop laughing after hearing Vinnie's take and playing.)
I still doubt Vinnie can "hang" with the death/black metal guys when it comes to speed/stamina, guys like Derek Roddy, Pete Sandoval, Flo Mounier, Hellhammer etc. But we all know Vinnie's a better all-around drummer when it comes to the "big picture" if u know what I mean

Uno & Josiah - LOL
Boz - agree, about Lang, Minnemann [or Mangini]
"Word!"
Here's the thread I'm waiting for:
"Weckl gets Slayer Gig!"
Actually, I think Vin will OWN Megadeth's stuff without a doubt. As far as double bass speed, he's got it. When I was at PASIC '94, someone asked him a double bass question, and he did a halftime double bass groove at a RIDICULOUS speed, which I've really never heard him do since. I swear.......I wonder if Vinnie EVER plays to his own max level. Maybe he just feels (as some of you have implied before) that he's proven himself in that area, and doesn't have the need anymore. Oh well, that's ok.
Oh, and agreed on the hooded sweatshirt look...that's what he needs to do with 'Deth!!!
This should be VERY cool....his playing on "Queen..." was great.
Quick Pete Sandoval story:
I was at a local drum store one day and Pete came in with a rough mix of Morbid Angel's new disc. The guys in the store played it and it was what you would expect, but it sounded fine. It turns out they recorded the album at a studio I do sessions at, so I asked the producer about it and he said that they had to make loops and that almost all the drum tracks had to be fixed with ProTools because Pete couldn't play anything consistently with a click....
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You are correct, Bozzio. There are some MONSTER speed/stamina players in the death/grind/thrash metal genre that would drop jaws here. (only from a technical standpoint) Doc from Vader is SCARY, but he couldn't play "Love is Stronger Than Justice" worth a crud. Quote:

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Interesting about Pete. I've seen him live years ago, and he was able to carry the tunes just fine. Oh well......I guess the studio is another monster for him.Quote:

Met Sandoval years ago [80's] at a storage unit practice facility here in town, long b4 the band got "a deal"/notoriety...what used to freak me out about him was that they used to play all kinds of whack uptempo thrash time signatures & groove/feel changes, at high speed, going by you constantly...& none of em knew how to read a stitch of music...all memorized...hardcore thrash/speed-metal anthems, & some LONG ones at that, w lotsa shtuff goin on/flyin by...but the timing was a band "feel" thing, & not click oriented...but live it was impressive at the time...those guys meant what they said w their slammin; it could kick some monsta a** in that genre...but evidently, it looks like the click-monster kicked theirs...
Bob Jarzombek [Rob Halford; Spastic Ink] is a very good rock/speed/metal drummer AW, & more....

Scotty Travis is far better in the speed metal, he was in the Priest and later with Halford. Listen to PainKiller by the Priest, Travis kills the double bass.
Yeah, Randy...his drum solo on the Racer X Extreme Volume Live recording knocked me out when it came out [b4 he joined priest]...THE best dbl-kick/chopsy/licks rock solo at the time for a long time...almost put the hurt on NP AND Aldridge [AFA unbridled chops]...
I find Jarzo plays better within the tunes in the more progressive veign, tho...but both have excellent meter.

Dave Weckl.....? Playing a heavy metal gig....?
.....with his 'drum slippers?!?!?!'
Hardly the most rock n roll thing you're ever lightly to see is it? I would picture him at home, practicing his songo grooves in 7/8 with a hot mug of cocoa!!!

Yeah! What kinda songs would Weckl play? Why, he would play heavy metal song-o's, of course...
& he's ditchin' the slippers - the "Weckl-Wreck'Em Combat Boots" are on the way...
And the mullet?...shaved over the ears, of course.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I'm a metalhead at heart, guys, so Dave Mustaine and Vinnie Colaiuta sound good together!!
Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Hopefully, Vinnie will play the promo appearances (if there are any) for Megadeth performances!
I can comfirm that news, actually I heard he got back earlier this week from the tracking. I also heard "worked on his double bass a lil" before hand... now, that is scary.
AH...I've said this mentally many time...I'd love to see Virgil on a Baked Potato gig phrase in a little Bonham during a solo. Why not? What rules are there really to creativity? To see Vinnie with Brian Bromberg and then a metal gig...surely in the studio there isn't a lot of difference to actual playing--fusion is seriously demanding music...throw in some power chords and you've got Winger w/o the complex phrasing.
I'm trying to say something I feel when I see a chops-fusion cat solo--give me some phrasing I can grab hold of!
LOL... that's funny Dazzler.. nice one
and vinnie doing MEGADEATH.. huh?! !!

that would be him indeed. Sum of the "nashville drummers" get alot of christian gigs or are involved in that "scene", Chester Thompson for example
"There have been some live gospel concerts/recording sessions that have been pretty amazing, but the actual recording session is a little more of a sterile environment. In the studio, you may or may not hear any lyrical content, but there is something that happens live that is a whole other dynamic all together."

As far as Metal wardrobe goes...
Vinnie is a pioneer in black vest wearing!
I even wore one on a gig recently hoping the magic would transfer down to to me.
And no, it didn't work.
maybe Bozzio can lend him sum of his old chains
How about a sleeve on Vinnie's left arm?
That would be killer to see Vinnie with Slayer also.

speaking or rocking metal -- did you guys ever hear Vinnie play on the Van Halen tribute band album (one cut) ? he did "Light Up the Sky" with Billy Sheehan, Malmsteen & some vocalist that sounds *real* good for that genre. check out VC & Sheehan whip out some metric modulation near the end...wild. seriously, crank this one to 11 !!!!!!

Dude that's none other than Doug Pinnick from King's X on vocals!!
more like
he taped the snare? ouch, what a way to piss off a drummer.
nice story Steve ...
and What? he taped the snare wires ...
While i like this version of LUTS, & I am a fan of Yngwie & Sheehan as great rock players, & Pinnick & King's X, & [of course VC]...
I like the orig VH version way better [hard to top an orig, eh?]...sometimes Pinnick sounds like he's A] on a bad cid trip B] outta tums/pepcid AC on this one...altho the more i listen to it, the more i like his vocal [but ya just can't top Diamond Dave's style & AVH's "looser" grooves & sloshy hats/cymbs on those VH tunes!]
DLR quotes: "...Hagar throws 'the killer party;' I AM 'the killer party'"....LOL
"...a sure sign that you are on your way to a nervous breakdown is taking your job position TOO seriously"....
Speaking of Live Christian gigs..
I played at one in Chino for about a year off and on. HUGE church (check out the bottom pic on this page). It was fun. Really big production staff, big scrrens on both sides of the stage, huge sound system, the whole nine. It was chellenging to throw a show together in a couple of hours, plus it kept my reading skills together. Plus playing with different musicians different weeks made you really listen and stay on your toes. The director was a GREAT guy, he knew what was what msucially. Even hired Vinnie for a recording he produced I believe.
There were some moments during the big rock sing-along power ballads where the music would build to the big final chorus and I would look into the audience and see a couple hundred people singing along with their hands in the air...a powerfull moment no matter what you believe (and I don't claim to be of any religion really).
Overall a rewarding experience despite the 40 mile drive one way (doh), up until the leader put a bunch of tape on the bottom head of my snare over the snares themselves, WITHOUT telling me, in between services. Then I hit the stage, start playing and I'm like WTF?? Apparently it was to decrease the volume (and verbal communication was out of the question at that point I guess?)
Anyways we had an "exchange" over it via email and I never heard from him again. Go figure.

Prob trying to overcome "sympathetic snare vibration/buzz"...hello...can anybody say, "noise gate on snare & add a touch of verb" [& perhaps tasteful, slight delay, 1 subtle "slapback"] to compensate?...or, discuss it w the drummer b4hand [given there was time in the situation]?...
I've learned to deal w this [mentally, at the time it occurs] & then not make too much of a fuss about it later...so i get the call back ...hey, don't worry - there'll be plenty of times to REALLY get a fuss goin'!! ;o) [like, if you get the RLJ call, maybe, ya know?]
