Skyler Dean - 9 lbs 11.3 oz. 22" long. Jul 31 2006. Momma and baby are doing fine after a long night of some very hard work.
Ten minutes after the birth was recorded this afternoon, we got a call from the local kindergarten. They're scouting for a linebacker for their football team, and wanted to know how soon Sky could be ready to suit up.

Despite being born in Kansas, our boy's a native Texan. How can this be, you ask? Due to some quick thinking and advance planning, I arranged for some genuine Hill Country dirt to be shipped to Wichita. When Sky put his feet on the ground for the first time, he did so on Texas Soil. My lawyer friends tell me that claim will hold up in any court in the land. (the land just north of the Rio Grande and south of Oklahoma, that is). [img]cool.gif[/img]
Congrats. I have to agree with your lawyer friends, the kids a Texan. Why is it that your wife looks great and you look like you've been through the wringer? Beautiful picture. Certainly happy that everyone is healthy. Come home soon.

Congratulations Mark. Great picture. You are a great looking family and Skyler has an alert look that promises great joy (he is already practicing getting his hands up to push away the big ugly Longhorn offensive lineman).
Since I know you like geeky facts here is an interesting one that is very pertinent as you now have a son. The terrible twos are a myth (as all parents know), but for male children it is especially true for physiologic reasons. It turns out that males have two periods in their lives when testosterone concentrations per unit of body mass peak (with the expected behavioral consequences). One is at the age of four years and all of us males can remember rather crudely the second one in adolescence. Parents remember both very well since the early one is associated with the exuberant risk taking and aggression that is often noted in four year old males (as they gleefully attempt to pummel and decapitate their siblings and engage in overtly hazardous play). The second spike is the one that coincides roughly with the age at which state laws grant driving privileges to adolescents. I learned all of this from the very smart director of the preschool that our kids attended.
