I am outta here. Sorry for the short notice but HB just pisses me off beyond posting anymore. Crashes, wise ass posters, lil to NO help in the admin area, and this ne flood control shit has beatin me down to not wanting to post. So as of today all my boards will be gone. Been fun posting with all of you and sorry I cant stay. I will seriously miss most of the people here.
CYA
well here is my two cents..... demon style....
CYa's a great guy..... Thinking he's a lil fed up with the system. First and foremost he came here with his organization and they used this system to stay in constant contact. If the system creates issues...of course he's going to look for a different alternative.
I think it's great he found a new place... for his group.... the guys a programmer... he's got the skillz he needs to make his site everything it needs to be.
Just going to miss him. His jokes... his ability to make me laugh consistently... and well, he just put himself out there. No airs. No fakeness. CYa - in the buff.....Take him or leave him.
He found issues big enough to leave here. That says something for him. He's not a "you hurt my feelings im gonna run" kinda guy.... but he is a stand behind what you believe in person. So, right there I know... he has his reasons
CYa.... miss you.....my friend... already [img]graemlins/broken_heart.gif[/img]
~~~
everyone has their reasons...... their own path to walk.... walk n smile Cya....
Thats all fine and dandy and of course I wish him all the luck.... but to leave and never return considering all the friends he made here... just seems unkind no matter how I look at it....
I do want him to succeed in all he does and hope he does so in every fabulous imaginable way... He IS a great guy.... and deserves all the goodness there is on this planet to obtain....
But my feelings are hurt and I am entitled....
(deleted t his sentence cuz it made no sense whatsoever)
snuggles wiqued....cuz i know..what it's like to feel hurt........
*does the dinosaur for CYa for old time sake*
Well..I think that a free message board is just that <font color=red>free</font>..we get what we <font color=red>pay</font> for..in this case I am very satisifed with HB for what I need it for..I cant fault him for going elsewhere if you have problems..The remark about no help from admin..well..i disagree..once again HE needed to remember this is FREE..Steven cannot make it what everyone wants it to be due to costs that we as posters dont help him out with..so no need to say the admin give little to no help..thats where i took offense..there has not been one thing i have asked for with HB I didnt get(within reason of course)..HB has made lots of progress since i came here several years ago..and they are continually making changes as best as they can..So if CYA wasnt happy and he left..fine..good luck where ever he goes..and with him being a "programmer"..then he will know the best way to settle this..is to make your own site and that way he can have no complaints.. He can make it how he wants..Now...my other gripe was the fact he removed his name..i guess i took it as childish behavior..im sorry but thats how i felt..he could have came back and posted from time to time..but no..he chose to remove himself from us..the people that thought he was one cool guy..we all enjoyed his comments..his pictures..we felt like he was part of our HB family..i reckon not.. ..some of us didnt know him at all but from here..and he will be missed..he should feel pretty good..looks like he has a demon cheerleader in his corner..
The Old Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
The Slightly Less Older Golden Rule: Don't do anything for anyone unless they do something for you.
The New Golden Rule: Do nothing for anyone and care less about it than you should.
You can really see the generational gap there. I can't wait for the extinction of mankind.
If your going to operate a system that brings in clientel like HB does then you're obligated to supply them with the help they require to maintain it. So if your unable to do it yourself then you recruite other people that can do it.
People are more than happy to volonteer their time to help out other people. I know this for a fact, as I give my time and support at Conforums.com for free.
For Cya to want to leave for reasons that he feels he doesn't get the support he needs says something about the service that is being run.
Sure it's free, but this is the business that is being run, and people need to feel like their support issues are being met. If they are not met there is pleanty of other "free" services out there that is more than happy to give them the support they require.
I myself left HB for a better "Free" service, but I retun back here from time to time, because I have made some wonderful friends like you and Chloe, Tee Ehn, and Summer.
So all I am saying is to be a little more easier on people that want to leave the system for a better system. Even though this is a "free" service.
boo fuckin hoo
it's good to have a demon in your corner
id stand in his corner any time..any place
Ya well... I am very dissapointed. Seemed like such a petty thing to get so upset about... but hey... Lets wish him well and lets get back to enjoying each other that are still here....
It's just holiday fever. We all get the grinchyness in us sometimes... except for me, I'm pissed off all the time, but then you would be too if you were a bird who couldn't fuckin' fly! DO NOT MOCK THE PENGUIN!
with me too?
Perhaps Wiz if you think of it as this..One person asks for one thing..when there are about 20,000 others that do not...why should you spend some extra money to make one person happy..when you have 20,000 others that dont care about the particular feature one person thinks they need..The issue of flood control i beleive to be important..How about i come over to your place and make 50 topics..flood you with hundreds of one line messages..and all you can do is ban me for it..bad luck..cause i can get another ip..come right back..and do it again if i so choose too..flood control gives us Mods a slight piece of mind on that not happening..i see it as a great feature..if you had to clean up one of FOAD's messes on here before..then maybe you'd know what I was referring too..it took me over an hour to fix my board back after he found a flaw in the system ..and flooded me with the same topic 50 times..it was a complete mess..whilst some people do get past the flood control feature..take demon for instance..there are times even she posts 10 times in a row without meaning too....so there are flaws with the flood control feature..I guess i truly dont see it as a reason to leave HB..but as i said before..im happy he found a better place..my debate wasnt about him leaving per say..it was about saying admin dosnt help people..when i know thats not true..they do all they can to help people..take alex for instance..he is enough to drive a person insane from his ramblings..yet Steven, Shatzy and Concorde all go the extra mile to please him..they do try to answer all his questions..give whatever assistance they can...if it were me..id have sent him off long ago..simply so i didnt have to deal with him..but they continue to be courtous and helpful..All i wanted to get across was..if you dont like it..go..find or create one better..but dont blame the owners because they simply wont change their site to suit you..dont you know about majority rules..sad as it may be..if it isnt beneficial to the entire site..why change it so one person is happy..if there had been more people complaining..im sure steven would have wanted to change what he can to keep the majority happier..Wiz im glad you like your site..im happy your helping them out..thats great..I wasnt at all impressed with it..I completely dislike popups..and there were popups there whan i looked in on it..so i prefer here...its all about choice..no harm in that is there? but i wont go to your forum and advertise my site either..I wont tear down your site on your site..thats just rude.. ..Now..thats enough debating this..its over and done with..we've all said what we think..im sure CYA has read it..My intention wasnt to down him for what choice he made..i simply wanted to have my say about admin and the help provided...I have the means to create my own hostboard type of site..but i dont want the hassles that go along with it..i have all the makings on one sitting here in my office..and a husband that can most definelty make it happen if i wanted it to happen...but i dont..i see what admin goes thru here..and i havnt the desire to deal with that..nor the time..so i am happy to have my lil spot on the net here at HB..and very happy that steven does what he does to keep us all as happy as he possibly can..
Jason..I went back to your site..there werent any popups!..its been about a year or so since i visited it i think..so i will retract my popup comment..it looked very nice too by the way..altho im still a HB kinda girl..I'll give credit where credit is due..
I like God's way of putting it. HAIL TO CAPTAIN CAVEMAN!!!!!!
Well here is my .02 so lets start with each of his complaints.
1. Crashes - Hostboard has NOT crashed in many many months. Our last outage was a DNS issue. I can show you the log files that Hostboard was up and running with no problems. In fact none of the recent outages in the last 2 years I beleieve had anything to do with my equipment but rather service provider related. This is well beyond my control although the last few months I did move to another provider who seems to be much more reliable not ot mention gives us more bandwidth. My DNS is not hosted with the same company althoug it will be soon. Hostboard runs on redundent hardware. If something goes down redundency takes over.
2. wise ass posters - Can't help ya there outside of I provided a banning ability for your board.
3. NO help in the admin area - I have to disagree here as the entire staff is always posting and replying. I see 6 admin replies to your post intrying to explain what flood control is and why it is there. Heck admin made a reply 6 minutes after your initial post!!!
4. flood control - Has been in effect well before I even took over the helm. It has never been changed or altered or even mentioned prior to your post. So why all of a sudden is it a problem?
So here is my take on things. Holiday season so I am sure the staff has been a little less diligent in keeping up with requests. But after an entire year of being there don't they deserve some sort of break? There is absolutly NO WAY I can complaign either as they do it on their own as it is not a paid position. Everyone does it becuase they want to and for no other reason. Your post was made 4 days prior to your departure during a holiday season. You never gave us time to come up with a solution much less talk about a solution that would make everyone happy. You just rant and raved how bad Hostboard is without giving us a chance to properly address the issue. Absolutle worst case would have been laxing the flood control to 30 or 45 seconds as a temporary fix until a vailable solution could be had.
The only posative out of this is I see a new MCP option being developed that allows mods to set their own flood control.
And what for? Becuase Hostboard is mine. Hostboard does not turn a profit for me. In fact Hostboard costs me thousands of dollars per year to run and maintain much less develop new features. Why? Becuase Hostboard is mine. I want it to be the very best I can make it. Go find someone who is more dedicated then me or the current administration. All hours of the night, hoidays, weekends we are always poping in to make sure things are running and replies are done. Heck even if I go on vacation I take a laptop with me just to make sure Hostboard continues and I have someone on standby in case of a hardware issue so they can rectify it. You think running a site like this is simple or painless? We all make sacrafices in one way or another.
What I hate is people that go rant and rave about this that and the other thing without giving us the time to discuss alternatives and giving me the time to figure out how I AM GOING TO PAY FOR IT Until recently I was unemployed for over a year. Did Hostboard stop or did we stop developing it? Nope...
And Wizard Hostboard is not a business. It does not even make enough money to declare to the IRS. It cost me more to decalre it a business and since I could not declare income why bother.
People are selfish and want want want but when it comes time to pay or even donate something no one seems to give .02 When was the last time you clicked on banner trying to help support a system that has given you a place to come to for free?
There is only 1 user that I can say, actualy paid to have a particular feature coded and brought as an option to the system. It was not necessary but very much welcomed none the less as we were able expedite the code and I think we our developers (Jordo in particular) did it in under a weeks time.
And CYA your a programmer? What language/script? Ever think about donating some time or at a reduced rate to help out?
Sorry to see you go and too bad you never gave us the time to dicuss your concerns and let us work out a viable solutoin
Good luck in your future endevours...
<font size="4" face="Tempus Sans ITC, Verdana, Arial">It's good to know you won't be closed minded, and are open to suggestions.Quote:
I was jsut defining the level at which Hostboard is technicaly declared at. As for being obligated, I am only as obligated as I want to be. If I decided to close shop at midnight tonight, then so be it. Poof it would all vanish. But obviously I am comited to Hostboard and have been since day one and the system is not going anywhere, other then growing and continueing to be developed. Otherwise I would not be here and a new owner would be found.
Unfortunatly I am not a programmer otherwise Hostboard would be very different in that I could do all that I wanted. Because of this I rely on a few developers. My background is that of a network engineer specializing in hardware, operating systems and data center management.
Anyways, support is always the hardest to acomplish as besides the admin board we also use e-mail which is where most of the support effort goes as that is the most active.
If you think we can do things differently please speak up as I am always willing to listen and try improve on what we already have
Views and opinions are good and I would hope everyone has different ones and shares them as we all can learn from one another and improve on the solid foundation Hostboard was built upon.
Here are a couple of my suggestions.
1. find some people who have been with Hostboards for a while, and know the ins, and outs of Hostboard, and make them mod's of the support forum.
The more people you have that can offer support the better, as I remember waiting a while before an answer was givin in regards to my support question.
So I would try to get people that visit on a regular basis that will be willing to do support around the clock. So in shifts.
Find someone thats here all the time in the morning, and someone thats here all the time in the afternoon, and evening, and night.
these will be volonteer people to so you won't have to pay them.
That way you will have some one around all hours.
2. Have them make a list of problems that arise that they can't help with, and make those prioroty problems, With the extra mods helping out you will then have extra time to spend with the priority problems
3. Make people feel that their problems are being looked into without making them feel like they are causing you a problem for asking you to fix it.
I have run into this problem several times, not just on this system.
these are a few, and there just suggestions.
FIRST LET ME SAY THANK YOU TO HOSTBOARD FOR BEING HERE. I REALLY DO HAVE LOT OF FUN POSTING TOPICS AND REPLYS AT ALL THE BOARDS AND GETTING NEW FRIENDS. BLAZEY HAS BEEN A GREAT TO ME , SO HAS DEMON AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO I KNOW. IAM TELLING PEOPLE HERE IN LAS VEGAS ABOUT HOSTBOARD AND SOME OF THEM HAVE VISITED BUT NOT REGISTERED YET AND LIKE WHAT THEY HAVE SEEN SO FAR. AGAIN THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE HOSTBOARD.
in fact, i'm here so much its strange when i am
there are loads of times that i may find a problem
suggests that a users issues are causing unnecessary
stress to the admin.
in as far as admin to user contact, steven posts
everytime he is on hostboard. he spends more time
in the admin board than anywhere else on HB.
in speaking for myself, there have been times
that i have contacted users for help concerning
a problem i cannot figure out. there has also
been times when i have contacted individuals
via PM about problems they have been experiencing.
alot of people know they can contact me outside
of hostboard if they are having problems. its
the main reason my messenger list is so long....
and people DO take advantage of that... and i
want them to. they know that i am always on and
i will do my best to find a solution... or talk
to someone that could help.
the recent DNS issue is no fault of hostboard.
the subsequent brash posts that happened after
the DNS outtage flamed the admin because 'they
weren't doing something right'.
as posted on the admin board... steven was right
on top of the issue MINUTES after it happened...
but his attempt to contact the DNS people went
ignored for days... thus causing HB to be down
for so long.
half the people that blamed admin for that outtage
probably never visited the admin board for that
information.
the point is... there are loads of pressure put
on admin for snappy performance... and even more
admin blasting when its not done fast enough.
for all that is publicly done by admin.. rest
assured there is 110 times as much going on
behind the scenes. ironically, the same is true
with the negativity of users.
cya left because HB didn't meet his needs. fair
enough. but its not necessarily chalked up to
the blame of admin.
blazey's post said a mouthfull... its precisely
what i would have said.
Terms of Establishing A Complaint About Hostboard
Item 6:
Paragraph 19:
If TJ is happy you're happy.
And I'm happy, so shut up already!
as the elected King of AW i declare this matter closed... CYA decided to leave..thats a persons right to do so... some will agree with the decision others will not... some will be okay with how it happened others will not... either way life will go on as it always does... certainly we all have bigger issues than flood control and what free message board services should be... its the holiday season and in the grand scheme of things NONE of this matters....get over it... find something else to bitch about or talk about...this is such a waste...
<font size="4" face="Tempus Sans ITC, Verdana, Arial">Might I suggest a poly-com Video Confrencing hookup, along with a realtime chatroom (to get around the flood-control)? People shouldn't do that.
take a moment to look about two feet above your head and about a yard in front of you... ya see that??
it was my point...wave goodbye to it cuz odds are once youve missed it that it isnt coming back....with that said take a moment to congratulate yourself for being able to miss the obvious.. not everyone can so easily stumble blindly into idiocy and flail around as aimlessly as you have...bravo.. and for anyone else who may have missed the point its simple... opinions and ideas are great...expressing them is even better... but beating people over the head with them or stating them ten times over is a waste of everyones time. so move along...
I dunno what's up with CYA because he always seemed like he fit in very well and enjoyed it here. A few wise ass posters and flood control shouldnt have bothered him at all. How many times does anyone actually make multiple postings in the same minute anyway?
The name removal thing was uncalled for, IMO. That really messes up the way threads look...unfortunately I know that all too well.
The admin here at HB works extremely hard for very little in return. I would've thought CYA would recognize this and accept the fact that not every problem he may have can be solved immediately. Maybe it can somewhere else...but at what price?
Maybe all of this has been mentioned before...I'd be lying if I said I read through more than a quarter of the posts in this thread....so if this is all repeated, please accept my sincerest apologies.
Have a GREAT day!
Lots of stuff I agree with and a lot of stuff I don't....
I understand if CYA wanted to go... he goes... he is gone.... regardless the reasons.... last I checked it was a free country and thats his right to go... I have wished him well many times and I mean that from my heart... I still consider him friend and would greatly accept him back.... with open arms...
BUT deleting his ID just seemed very harsh... perhaps I am just taken it personal... but it was like saying none of us mattered and not worth staying in touch with.... yes and it makes his previous posts look awkward.... Sure find a better place for his boards... but we had to go too????? I didn't get that...
His behavior seemed very odd recently considering what we all are used to seeing and experiancing... he seem to take something that was minor and get excessively angry about it.... Just what I saw...
The service is free and a few... as few as they are.... minor lil inconveinences are worth dealing with.... this place just gets better and better as time goes by....
I am a real advocate of HB... been here a while now and I would recommend this board system to anyone... as I am sure there are other systems out there perhaps with more to offer.... the people...support and the community here is what I cherish.... I too remember this place back in the old days and its amazing now... Steven, Concorde, everyone.... I think you have done a utterly fabulous job.... you have an amazing team that supports you.... I take my hat off to you all....
<font size="4" face="Tempus Sans ITC, Verdana, Arial">I'm wondering why you're so easily tempered over a topic that for one, if you don't like it then there is no need to respond to it, and two; If you don't care to read other peoples opinions then you should definately not be on a message board, because my flamboyant friend you would understand that people will respond to said topic to express there views all they want.Quote:
it was my point...wave goodbye to it cuz odds are once youve missed it that it isnt coming back....with that said take a moment to congratulate yourself for being able to miss the obvious.. not everyone can so easily stumble blindly into idiocy and flail around as aimlessly as you have...bravo.. and for anyone else who may have missed the point its simple... opinions and ideas are great...expressing them is even better... but beating people over the head with them or stating them ten times over is a waste of everyones time. so move along...
Now please try to be a little more respectful to people in public. If you have to have words to people or want to belittle someone then use a little thing called a PM function. this can be used to let your frustrations out on.
Thank you, and have a wonderful day!
Ya mule Ya!!!
No sense beating a dead horse..thanks for all the input...you all made some very valid points..but i think this topic is taking a turn for the worse..and I for one dont think its a good idea to let that happen..Im in no mood to babysit my board..or have to ask anyone to refrain from posting..ect..so i will just lock this thread.again..thanks to all who posted..your an exceptional group of people..im glad that you are all a part of HB AND a part of my HB family!
i opened this cuz i wanted to post.....
i think this thread has brought knew insight into things... shows support....and i felt earlier... that it should be closed...i didn't like the tension i felt... but im a weenie...so i let it go
good comes from all......
i miss CYa tho
Steven this is where we disagree, while it might not make enough to declare to the IRS, it is still considered a business, because your offering message boards to the public.
So the public is getting something from you, hence you are obligated to give this system the support it needs.
I am not trying to offend anyone here. I am just stating my views on this subject, so please don't take offence to what I say.
Flood Control is a very serious issue, which has been taken care of at the system that hosts my board, so as Blaze was saying if she tried to come and flood my board with posts, she wouldn't be able to. So I don't need to ban anyone.
However even if I did, I have several options available to me. I can ban by name, email address, and IP address, whether it be a single IP or a range of IP addresses.
And this is also being upgaded in v.4 comming out soon.
The system that hosts my board is coded, and created by a single person who considers what he is doing a busness, and not a hobby. sure he needs help to admin the support board, but he has managed to offer a free support service to his clientel.
Well back to HB before I get banned for spamming LOL.
Steven, I do give credit where credit is due, and you have done a wonderful job with HB because I remember it back when it was on the old system, and taking it from that to what it is now is no easy job,I do feel that support could be handled differently here, but again thats only my opinion, and there are several here that would disagree with me, and thats ok. We wouldn't be human if we agreed with everything everyone said.
