I'm a science fiction fan too. I grew up watching Star Wars and Star Trek. However, I think I will wait a little bit to watch the last Star Wars movie. Star Wars III is supposed to be the best of the pre-quels.
I've seen the first three, with Harrison Ford, etc., but haven't seen any of the prequels. I may wait until they're on DVD to watch them. That's like what, 3 years?
I've heard it's good though, so I hope you all enjoy it!
At this theatre here, these two guys waited in line 6 months before episode 2 opened. They camped in a tent. I asked them about LOTR and they started freaking out, "F* that movie, Star Wars baby, uh uh uh!!!".
They were on CNN... yep, nothing like being the world's biggest dorks on the world's leader for news [img]wink.gif[/img]

Im not a big fan but me and my friends thought it would be cool to watch the first show!
Some of the acting is dodgy but its for sure a great movie! my favourite one of the newest 3!
Lets see how many Dollars good ol' George Lukas will be able to squeeze out of this one...
yeah, i've heard the first two hours are bad acting and dialogue torture....but the last 30 minutes is spectacular! according to the reviews in chicago papers anyway. so don't worry if you get to the theatre a little late (like 2 hours!) [img]wink.gif[/img]

I love Star Wars. Saw the first three when they came out when I was but a lad. I may check out the new one in a week or so, but Jar Jar Binks curbed my liking for the latest ones.

I saw it in Leicester Square in London on Monday after watching the other 5 films, Lucas and others came in to see us..... the first time ever that all 6 had been seen in release order.
It's fantastic, there were 1300 people in the theatre all day, and half of us were dressed up, ( I wasn't!!!) We even had the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra outside playing the music at Lunchtime!!!!
So yeah.... bit of a fanboy I guess!!!! haha
I've never seen a star wars film but I guess I'll go check this out. I wonder if I will be missing ALOT not seeing the prior films?

Just saw it (yes, I'm a SW geek too!), loved it! And you'll be happy to know that Jar Jar speaks a grand total of 0 lines.
And the acting, IMO, wasn't that bad (Ian McDirmid was awesome). All Anakin/Padme scenes cut right as they were about to get annoying. Less dialogue, more action. Better for all!

Incredibly stale script making even great actors delivering it still impossible to take seriously. I thought I was watching a school play, there was genuine laughter in the theater several times. Important things were happening and I didnt care. Characters were changing and I didnt care. All the dialougue is so god dam stale and sterile. How can you get into a story delivered in such a way??
I kept waiting for it to start to get good like everyone said. It never does.

Lucas is 3-3 in a 6 film franchise. I dont remember anything about the other 2 prequels for the same reasons I wont remember this one. Stale boring visually stunning crap.
Oh its sure pretty though. Amazing art direction as always. The best. And whats with the "Spielberg Cried" news story bullshit? Did Lucas ask him for a favor? If he cried its because he finally realized that Lucas lost the ability to tell a story after ROTJ.

Good review Steve. I hated the original and NEVER will get this fighting with a light wand stuff...NEVER. To each their own...SW's has made 9 BILLION in merchandising over the series of films. That in itself is Star Worthy...may the Force be with Walmart!
The original Star Wars kicked ass. Lucas' ego got the best of him since the first three (The REAL Star Wars movies) and the rest is history. I do like how Ewan McGregor plays Obi-Wan in these, though. Can't polish a turd, but at least he tried [img]tongue.gif[/img]
I grew up watching "The Outer Limits" "One Step Beyond" "The Twilight Zone" on TV, in B & W. When Star Trek in Color came out, it was great, but not as effective as serious Sci-Fi B & W. BWUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
THAT, was real Sci-Fi. Star Wars is great but leaves little to the imagination where the real adventure lies.
BTW, if any of you drummers read (books that is), check out a series of books called "Dune" by Frank Herbert. They were written back in 59' I believe. By far, the best science fiction you'll ever read. It's very challanging reading. It'll take some effort to get through the first half of the first book because it's based in a completely different reality that you have to learn, similar to "Lord of the Rings" (Dune came out the same year). But Dune is much more Sci Fi treachery and starkness and much less fairy tale.
Anyway, there's my 2 cents.

just saw it on opening night and i must say that it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. i actually liked it ALOT! i hated episode I and II. the third really ties in the first 2 episodes with the last three pretty darned well. i'm actually going to see it again! to my understanding, lucas had someone co-direct and co-write the script this time around. with that said, my favorite is still is EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. i thought l. kasdan's screenplay was the best out of all the star wars series. i think most everyone here will enjoy the movie.

Star Wars bites broken tom mounts! I also never got this movie. I loved the Twlight Zone, but this stuff is lousy. The original Planet of the Apes was killer. I'm not into all the space stuff.
As for Dune with Sting, that was TOTO playing the soundtrack!

I'm with the "Dune Theory" - more real grit & less imaginary fairy tale fluff...[like the real world?!] /;c) I never read the book[s], but I remember the movie way back...but I was young & had to get past the "post-SWs action boredom principle" to truly appreciate the headiness of Dune, TMov....
SWs is fun action stuff, cool, but not to be 'gotten' too crazed about.
Star Trek the orig TV series was a great show, way ahead of its time in theme[s], despite the slightly hammy acting & ever so occasional contrivedness [is that a word?], even by today's standards [or maybe not!]

That's what I was talking about with the classic Sci Fi's: One Step Beyond, The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, etc. You want a story, read the "Dune" books. You'll be challanged, but you won't be sorry.
just saw it, flipped my "intellectual know-it-all smart ass" bit and enjoyed it for what it was, a Star Wars flick. But I also like David Lynch's Dune, FWIW.
I thought Hayden Christensen had the best performance in the thing, save for some wierd dubbing and voice cracking at the end. That's Lucas's fault. he made me believe he was strong in the force thing and talented but also mentally cracked. Maybe he wasn't acting regarding the former. Anakin was mentally unstable, the result of his upbringing as a slave, for Padme not to see that he was completely bonkers was pretty ridiculous.
Plus, how can it have been so bad with The Emperor, the frickin Emperor revealing himself and then killing Jedi's? Come on, that was awesome.
The story arc was good, the script was terrible.
It makes sense, his transformation into Vader, his instability turned him into it. This part of the film was solid and the actor was pretty subtle with it. I mean, that's the point of this whole damn story, Vader going to the Dark Side and his reason for doing it. He was talented and nuts. I liked seeing him being put into the vader suit and finding his feet in it.
The opening sequence was pretty friggin incredible.
I don't see the whole Natalie Portman as a good actress thing, other than she is a babe...she lost the will to live? WTF? Terrible.
It was a helluva lot better than ROTJ, which I never really liked. I saw SW and ESB about 20x each when they came out in the 70's.
I'll probably see it again. It might get better with repeated viewings or get worse, hard to say.

SW is more about the action & SFX than anything, the fun fast-paced action-&-fluff stuff, but it's also about the age-old "good vs. evil" premise, no rocket [spacecraft] science there. ;c)
I think SWs just echoes real life in general...but with a lot more action & fantasy elements, & less boredom. Good to make ya forget 'cher real life BS for about a couple of hours to watch someone else's... ;c)

ok, so i go a second time to see episode III cuz my best friend hadn't seen it. to make a long story short, if you liked it the first time do you yourself a favor and don't watch it a second time. i couldn't believe i was falling asleep! i heard it made something like 300 million so far? (espn of all stations)
i'm so confused i don't know WHAT to make of this flick. then again, there are far more important things to worry about.

A gtrst friend of mine [akin to Flitcraft to Holmes ;c)] was given a gift certificate for the theater by the parents of 1 of his gtr students for Cmas; he held onto it & called me to see if i wanted to go. So I didn't have to violate my "non-support of the majority of Hollywood crap in general" credo [img]tongue.gif[/img] The Bubble doesn't need any more $$ thrown into it, but that's entirely another argument ;cp]
Fun stuff. I enjoyed it. Action action action packed, Fantastic epic panoramic scenes & SFX, of course. Yoda's CGI facial features were very well done, for starters.
The 1 thing to me that was a little weird tho, was buildiing up the guy Anakin for almost the first 2/3rds of the flick as a real good, moral, & ethical, & honest character who suddenly does a complete flip to evil, & then hacking up & murdering little children. Disturbing, for I don't feel that any person who is good can ever make that kind of an extreme turn; they have to have the element of evil there from early on to do so. Unless he was putting on a good face/charade, fronting the whole time, which he is not, as he is struggling with realizing his goodness. A murderer of innocents cannot be a good person, ever. [OK, no need to turn this into a boring, pointless, twisting, useless philosophical, semantical, rhetorical discussion at this point about what i just said.]
They did take some liberties with reality in tying some very loose ends together for the sake of making it fit the movie, didn't they...but it's fantasy, isn't it FCOL.
But to really enjoy this stuff, one shouldn't get all deep & philosophical about Star Wars[!] [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img] , taking it too seriouisly as if it's more one's reality than actual reality itself, & just enjoy it for what it is, a fantasy adventure in sight & sound with a loose basis in moral, ethical, 'spiritual,' & philosophical reality! It's not higher philosophy & education, or rocket science - it's a movie; f'n Star Wars, for crying out loud! ;cp [albeit visually & aurally very well done!]
And yes, there was some rather contrived dialogue wasn't there... ;cp
I will not be going back to the theaters to see it a second time, the next time will be on DVD whenevr that may be at some point down the long road, if it happens as such! ;cp
Henry, I'm with ya on the Outer Limits, One Step Beyond, Twilight Zone, [Night Gallery, Night Stalker, whatnot], & Star Trek TV shows, altho you'd be hard-pressed to impress today's younger movie/TV/vid-games crowd with those old shows! Eh, wth do they know, they missed out on the real formative "be-bop" sci-fi & horror TV years!! ;cp I grew up on the old reruns of those shows. They were, aft all, a little b4 MY time AW... ;c)
But again, fun fast-paced stuff if you suspend your disbelief for 2+1/2 hrs of your life.
