uberdata or uberjunk

There was a good argument going on this topic so I started a new thread. What is your opinion about uberdata?


This morning I went to their site to check it out and it looked solid so I downloaded the program to check it out. After figuring out how to get the program to come up I downloaded some maps to check out but none of them would come up. So I went to their message board and asked how to get it to work and one of the moderators told me if I couldent figure it out I should sell my car. Great tech support I would rather pay for Hondata than have a bunch of jerks treat me like that.

i go here for all my uberdata needs

they're getting pretty good, but i think they're about to hit a wall of actually figuring out what's in the ROM itself, and not controlled by other circuits in the ecu. and i don't see the uberdata geeks making their own hondata-type boxes in the near future. not keeping it "free" anyway.

makes me happy to see other computer/electrical engineering types hack and reverse engineer electronics [img]smile.gif[/img]

keebler65...What do you do for a living? The reason I ask that is because most of the people who are EE or work in the computer field will gravitate to a system like uberdata. There are others here that don't like to have to figure out every little issue as they come up or would rather have a dedicated tech support system in place for them to get info from.

From my standpoint I will buy a system like Hondata or AEM or Motec instead of going the uberdata route. The reason I say that is because most likely I will have a substantial turbo setup that I want to have a good EMS system that has the bugs worked out and who have pro tuners and support. This is a big deal to me since if the EMS has any issues or bugs it could lead to a blown motor which is expensive.

So remember in the end you will always pay the same amount. Start cheaper in the beginning and end up paying more later, or just pay more the first time and do it right!! [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

FYI...I am a Systems Admin and I still wont use uberdata [img]smile.gif[/img]

also about your comment of not starting cheaper and doing it right: i am very supportive of this statement, especially in my work on my car. however, i do not believe this statement has anything to do with uberdata. i think it would be better related to not using an FMU and going right to an EMS (hondata, uberdata, AEM).

i'm going to have to disagree right there. i don't see too many non-techie people grasping all the concepts that are thrown at you from the uberdata methodology... and the geek-terms used by the uberdata community.

burn this, hack that, solder this, wire that... to the typical "car guy", these terms are nothing but greek. and they'll stay greek, because they're working on motors, and metal, and big machines that grunt. they're not used to working on itty-bitty electronic doo-dad's that run off smoke.

i would definitely say you need a strong electronics background in order to use uberdata effectively. a degree in an electronics/programming field is even better.

my point is this: you should scare people off with uberdata. the uberdata community does this regularly... they tell you to go fuck yourself if you ask anything under a 400-level electronics question. the only people that should use it are the people that have the hoity-toity attitute "i can figure this out" to start with.

"recruiting" people, like what's seemingly happening here, is going to lead to nothing but more blown up motors... and would a bunch of blown up motors (caused by inexperienced people using uberdata) help uberdata's case as a "free hondata" at all?

i disagree. the only electronics that are involved with uberdata would be chipping your ECU, and that can be done by MANY people online as a service. i see it in peoples sigs all the time: "ecu chipping service". that, and the fact that people often sell chipped ECU's. once you've got a chipped ecu, and assuming your car is OBD1 already, it is only a matter of figuring out the software and the art of tuning, which has practically nothing to do with electronics. so in sum, as long as you can come up with a chipped ECU, the last part of the equation would be learning to tune.

you're forgetting about the whole burning chips processes... changing something, burn another chip, rinse and repeat.

unless, using rom-emu's is employeed, in which case you've got to expect back-yard-bill to learn how to deal with the constant unreliability of such devices.

oh yeah, and is he going to build his own rom burner and emu? i doubt it, he doesn't know anything about electronics. so then, he's buying these devices commercially, which costs a pretty penny--the pretty penny a hondata dealer would already have spent.

then, since he's tuning himself, he should have a wideband setup. there's another few-hundred bucks. or wait, is he expected to build DIY-WB too, not knowing anything about electronics?

then he's got to have a laptop, and know how to use it. know how to work with all these gadgets he's bought (burner, emu, wbo2, etc)... know how to work with whatever datalogging programs he's using... and we haven't even started tuning yet.

where's the easy part? there's a lot more to it than socketing an ecu and *poof* it's all perfect and ready to tune.

I did check the frequently asked questions and looked at a lot of posts and none of them came close to my question. I did mess with it some more today and everytime I tried to load a map to the program I got an error something like "you need a rom opened" do I need to have a chip hooked to the computer for the maps to load?

And like I said it looks like a solid program and a much cheaper alternative to hondata. What worries me is everytime I have a problem and ask a question on the board are they going to call me a moron.

I did not major in computers nor am I an EE but I am sure I can do the mods and figure it out if they give me a chance.

what map are you trying to open? the LS or GSR? or one of the others?

Any of them but I have tried the gsr one the most. From the main program I click on the import button. All the maps I have downloaded are there. Then I click on one and that error pops up. Like I said I am not very computer savy so I might be doing somthing completely wrong.

you have to open a file (File->Open) before you can import. start by opening StockGSR or StockLS. if these are what you want, then you're set. if you want a P30, for example, open StockGSR and then import P30. this is outlined in the link above.

Thanks I will try it out tomarrow I have a lot of respect for people like you who help others out. And I love your site and will be putting JRSC on my crx within a few months.

anyways i'm sure most of you know my view of uberdata from my last thread, and btw, i'm glad someone took the initiative to make a new thread because it think there is a lot of potential for uberdata but many people on this board in particular do not realize it yet. its gaining a lot of acceptance on honda-tech, with exception of the hondata tuners who of course hate it (thats something i dont understand though, since they should still be able to make money on tuning a system, no matter which one it is).

if you guys want to put down uberdata, thats cool, just be sure to be clear about it and state precisely what you don't like about it. also if any of you would like to learn what it is, the link in my sig may be a nice starting point.

I am getting close with the uberdata, I opened the program then clicked open clicked on stockgsr then clicked import stockgsr and the fuel, ignition and boost maps still did not show the other options worked so I know I was on the right track.

re-read the directions very closely in the link i posted. if you want a stock gsr bin, all you have to do is open it. you DO NOT have to import it once it has been opened. the only time you import is if you want something other than a gsr or ls. with uberdata it will be vital to pay attention to details such as these. nothing can be skimmed over - it must be studied.

I am almost positive I tried that also is there anything else I might have screwed up?

i dont know man...make sure you extracted all the files from the zip, and make sure they are not read-only (right click the file, select properties). otherwise try to post a very specific question on the uberdata board.

Keebler65.. it is nice to see you here. I was just reading your site the other day and thought to myself - "Finally someone from the JRSC community is running UberData and report good result!"

I seldom post here in this forum but am a frequent reader at Host Board, H-T (esp. Uberdata threads) and the Uberdata forum.

My journey with Uberdata has been slow but fun! Even now I have not running solely on Uberdata.. It first takes a lot of readings but in thr long run, I feel that I've picked up a lot of knowlege and having a lot of fun along the way.

I have socketed a P06 (for practice, and for future B18B project), a P72 (on my current hybrid JRSC Civic).

Currently the Civic is running on Uberdata with stock map (baby step). I wanted to make sure that I don't run into problems with Uberdata. And I am glad to report that it's running with no problem for almost 2 months! With Uberdata base map, the car runs fine with JRSC, FMU, etc. as if it is still running the factory ECU. I am patiently waiting until I have time to install larger injectors and remove the FMU. However I plan to do the ignition map first.

Your site and write-up is really informational and helps with the beginners. Even myself picked up a lot of good points, like the TPS enrichment you mentioned especially for the JRSC guys.

I really think that Uberdata is a fun toy to play with, if you like to experiment and tinker with your Hondas. Experience will build along the way, so don't get paranoid because of the engine blow.

Of course, don't get offended or disappointed by the people who put other people down. There are people like that everywhere you go. On the bright side, there are also people like keebler65, that are willing to help another car guy out.

Also, there will always be people who feel better to go with vendor type of systems, and some would always get the ghetto home grown gadgets. IMHO, the cost/performance ratio of Uberdata is hard to beat.
