Hey guys...
I was supposed to recieve a "Thompson Intake" with my JRSC conversion, and never did. Apparently it never existed for B series motors to begin with.
Anyway, I need to get rid of this "filter on a stick" and get a CAI.
I know the 2 biggies, AEM and Iceman... I was just curious what everyone else here was using, and their results. Is the AEM or Iceman sufficient in diameter for 15lbs of boost? What mods were required to make it fit with the JRSC?
Is their someone that makes a cold air box similar to the "Thompson" design for the B18c1?
I'm trying to avoid making one... Although I will if need be.
Thanks for your help.
Allan

I don't know about 15 lbs of boost, but Comptech has their new "Icebox", which uses a filter on a stick with a box enclosure and tube drawing air from beneath. This may be another option for you but I don't know who has used one with a JRSC. The advantage would appear to be a larger diameter intake tube. I'd be curious if it would fit over any other filter on a stick as well (which is probably easiest answered by calling Comptech http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif).

Get yourself some 3" PVC and a reducer(too fit the throttle body.) Take some 1/8th" to 1/4" sheet plastic and some sheetrock screws and make a cold air box... run some weather stripping around the entrance of the stick portion where the filter enters the cold air box to seal it..with another piece of 3 to 4" pvc running into the hole that your stock air box ran through, you may also want to drill about ten holes 1/2" in diameter in the pipe that extends down to prohibit H20 from entering your intake.... it works just fine, you may be out 45-50 bucks and have just the same performance... or better than AEM, or Iceman.

Injen makes 3 inch cold air kits, as does arospeed, and any number of 'generic' intakes.

Thanks... I may end up doing just that.

I wonder if there are any fitment issues with those of us that have JRSC's?

No more than what an AEM or Iceman would give you.

I'm expressing my ignorance here... But I believe I have heard the fitment issue they have is nothing a band saw can't fix... True?

I've only done a couple of GSR's with JRSCs, but one advantage that you have is that the placement of the TB is much closer to where it would be stock, than that of what the D blowers are.
When I did the blower install on Jay's car (MouhalIb), all I had to do was cut an inch or so from the length of the tube on his AEM. It worked pretty well.
3" is definately what you want with the higher boost levels.
-
Allan, I have hooper's old Thompson intake and am willing to sell it to you if you want. It's just not "pretty" enough for me http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/redface.gif I don't see why it won't fit a B series. Chime in if it won't Phil. [email protected]

My Injen fit well (better than the AEM before the blower) after I trimmed about 2 inches off the cold air extension.
-
The Injen fits pretty nicely.
If you want one for fairly cheap hit me up with an email. I have one that fits a JRSC'd b18c1 perfectly. IMO it is better than the AEM because it has 3" piping compared to the smaller piping of the AEM.

Larry told you this intake never existed for any B-series motor?

Also for your application this one is an imaginary picture in Larry's mind?

The letter from Larry states: "To date, no production Thompson Engineering Mega Tubes have been built, or sold to to any customers with B series Honda engines with our reworked JR blower package. The ONLY Mega Tubes that we do stock for the B series applications are meant to work with the manifolding of our own blower systems, and these will not fit the Jackson Racing based kits". This is in a letter I recieved from Larry on Monday, he wrote it on 7-17-01.
I sent him a threatning letter because that is the one thing I purchased that he never gave to me. Of course he never told me they did not exist. He never even hinted to it. In fact, when I picked up the motor in December, it was supposedly inside the crate. When I got home, I found out it was not.
Long story short, he refunded the money I requested. Hey... it only took me since December, but he did comply nonetheless.
Anyway, I did not start this thread to bash.. I need a CAI.
The Arospeed front mount intake looks interesting... Anybody use it? I'm not sure if I'm into the "fake intercooler" look. Almost ricey.
The Comptech package looks good too.

ImportTuner (Donny) makes a custom 3" CAI. I have seen pictures of SeattleSI's (Cisco) on ClubSI who also runs a JRSC. I think he wants $250 for the setup.

Do not use PVC. that is a very very bad idea. When PVC gets hot it releases fumes that are not good for being consumed by a motor....
Wait a second..lol pvc does release gasses if you burn the stuff... LOL its not going to release anything pulling cold air in from the fender well.. think about it.. you run HOT water through the pipes in your home no? that would be quiet a bit more heat then whats coming through an intake.. so your right and wrong..

Allan, I'd bet that you could make anything work with some enginuity, including Colby's D series Thompson tube. The cold air tub that I made is specific for a Civic engine bay, but the tube itself might work, as well as any of the others mentioned.
Colby, I hope I didn't strike a nerve with my "cosmetic" commments. The blower really does look good! Hell, I bought a whole new car to look good! I understand that you've put the small pulley back on. How is it running?

To use PVC would be a bad idea for a turbo application, but I think it would work fine here.
Also, I remember seeing somewhere, I think on vtec.net/geesr, about moving the battery and removing the plastic piece to open the cowl up to pull high pressure air from that area. That seems like a great idea to get cool air since the JRSC's don't seem to respond well to the longer tubes that CAI's have.

About the Civic Thompson tub on a GSR, one of those pictures is of the typeR. It's ABS module looks smaller than the one in my 95 GSR. The shape & position of your ABS module may determine if the tub shown will fit or not.

if you wanna build your own Cold air intake.
here are some instructions and dos and donts of building intakes.

[rant]Sorry if I was harsh and sounded like bashing Larry to the pulp he is, but it's a dam shame he is very comfortable about the situation he has put you in and then cussing you out on top of it. Around here bad deals and shitty attitude like that, someone might end up in the hospital or get sued up the ass.[/rant] Now on topic: order some 3" aluminum pipes, bends, and U's and just fabricate your own cold air intake. Follow the link MacGyver provided as it's a perfect example of a solution to your goal without any welding! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

LoL. No way, man. That comment was actually for you http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif
But seriously, the Thompson tube just isn't "shiny" enough for me. I'd sell it for a good price if you want it Allan.

My homemade 3" short ram is made from PVC. It works fine with the JRSC and no part of it gets hot enough to melt or burn. It only cost me about $40 to build...the most expensive part being the K&N.

Thanks for all your input everyone.
I ended up going with the Comptech Intake and Icebox. It should be here by Friday, I'll let you know how it works out.
Thanks again.

Here's my setup using a generic Eclipse intake:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...182&Sequence=0
The intake is cool to the touch even after long trips especially with the double walled heatshield, DEI heat wrap, and cold air ducting installed. In all, it costs about ~$110 for this 3" shortram setup.

Hey zip, where did u buy those heat wrap? Does local pepboys/autozone have some? I need to wrap my intake as well as a/c lines and such..thanks.

I got it from Sonnyballs on this board: http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/Forum40/HTML/007414.html
Summit sells the DEI heatwrap for $50, but you'll only need half of it for a short ram setup. Sell the unused portion afterwards.
