Hey man, welcome. I love metal too. And Jazz. Mostly Swedish metal like At the Gates, that sorta thing.
Hey, Bob.
Welcome.
There are some nice and
helpful people here.
Why don't you post about
the double-kick and get
a new thread going? I'm
sure there will be takers
on what and how to do.
You should go over to
Virgil's too. There's
always talk about double-
kicking there.
Regards,

Hi Bob! Welcome to HOD. It is always interesting to hear drummers' of different backgrounds (i.e. Jazz, Rock, Heavy Metal, Funk, Latin, Country, etc.) views. Looking forward to reading your posts.
Cool Thanks for the warm reception!

Welcome bob.. everyone is entitled to there opinion of course, I greatly dislike country myself.. no biggie...
"And also, you have to mention Vinnie Coliauta in all of your posts."

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Considering you don't even know who Virgil is, then I assume you don't know anything about metal. Metallica is not metal. They have left that arena and now put out boom bap boom boom bap moron rock.Quote:

This board is for drummers, not just fusion players. And also, you have to mention Vinnie Coliauta in all of your posts.
I'm sure Metal Bob can give you a good list of metal bands to check out.

Welcome Bob-
I am not much into metal and longer, as I prefer "tasteless" fusion, but in the interest of personal growth, who would you suggest listening to nowadays as representative of the style of music your into?
Oh, and one last thing: If you want to avoid a war in here, please do not start a thread comparing Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl? or Vinnie and Nicko McBrain for that matter That is HOD suicide!
Take Care. F.S.
Stop Laghing at me. Fusion only seems to appeal to the very few other fusionheads who are into or on that level musically. Thus thats why there are alot of struggling fusion musicians out there. Where as metal and rock/alternative groups with melody and singing (besides rap and hip hop retards) sell millions of records and make lots of money and date hot chics. Maybe thats why Vinnie always plays on so many pop sessions. Because they pay money and lets face it life is about money and chics.

You should not personel attack people. Its bad message board behavior. My thought proceess is actually very intelegent. I have a masters from Columbia University. Lets keep it about drumming Bozzio.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I must say that in the last 20 years, metal has grown and evolved just as much, if not more than fusion. Of course you have Virg and Marco who are forging a path, but I don't know of many fusion bands who are saying anything different--maybe Dapp Theory.Quote:

A lot of modern fusion can be attributed to the CCEB sound, or guitar virtuoso trios like Holdsworth or Krantz. Correct me is this too large of an assumption.
Sure, there are a lot of shitty metal bands out there, and there are shitty fusion bands----but you don't hear many shitty fusion bands because no one will sign them. But metal is more popular so the the labels will sign generic metal bands.
Groups like Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cryptopsy and others have a unique sound that was unheard of in the 80's. Fusion has crept into metal, but not much metal has crept into fusion.
The songs by these artists are way more difficult than the Baked Potatoe Vinnie show--which is simple tunes being blown over.
Fusion is based on a lot of improv, and metal is based on heavily structured composition. Of course there are many intricate fusion artists, Billy Childs, Steve Coleman, MCLaughlin, OTV, PlanetX. And there are many metal bands with alot of changes as well. Athough I can say that harmony wise, fusion is more complex than most metal--metal is more on the rhythmic side.
All music has grown, except radio music. Let's not forget classical music, that has been evolving as well, and some of it is so unlistenable that it could be devolving.
And CAB with Virgil, Bunny, Tony Mac etc.. can attract 15 people in VA, whereas Cannibal Corpse can sell out. Metal is just as legitimate as fusion as far as I'm concerned.
Metal rules Brother man! Like I said before if fusion is so truely great why doesn't it attract more of an audiance? I bet if you added up the total sales of every major fusion artist, it probably wouldn't even be close to say the total net value of certain metal artists. Ane lets face it life is all about $ and chicks.
"Chick corea = Bubba Boie"
This has to be a joke.
Why does Britney Spears sell more than Cryptopsy? For one it has a wider/direct appeal. As "underground" as a metal band maybe, trust me most of them have alot of appeal to the pimpled face 15 yr old who can't stand listening to Linkin Park or the 19 yr old who won't bridge outside playing monotonus "extreme" laughable blast beats and dares to make fun of the stupid punk kid who's pretty much doing the same thin.g
On the other hand do u expect a kid to listen to Tribal Tech and actually understand it from a musical persepective? Hell No.
I don't think all forms of fusion are picking up from CCEB or anything associated with Allan. Listen to Dave "Fuse" Fiuczynski.
Read-Learn-Educate Yourself
Bozzio this is a drum message board not a pick on board. If you were so educated you wouldn't be wasting your time posting about useless nonsense. I know personel attacts are frowned upon but you are acting like a joke. All I want to do is be helped out from this board and all it has to offer to someone who is into and loves drumming, but maybe you just don't get it? Maybe you sould try another message board? I'm sorry to be so blunt but does anyone else agree? Lets keep things real and about drumming!
Personally, this has become the rather typical cliched mundane topic.
BTW, welcome BTKOMD...[funny name, but w a self-imposed nomer like that, you MUST be 1 helluva drummer ]
You have posted some interesting posts...as i do not listen to much metal in any form anymore [except for Donati's 1st & 2nd solo discs, which has elements, but isn't really in & of itself], u r helping me to stay abreast of elements within this style, which is cool by me...I HAVE heard some rhythmically good metal - some beeyotchin drummers in that scene today...but, & like every style, metal also has loads of complete bullsh** [this goes for every style]...& that can be argued as opinion at best...
Fusion also has sour stuff, too...but it also has some of the most ground-breaking musical ideas ever...dude, that comment about "life is about $$ & chicks" - LMFAO...that is your opinion [it may well be - a majority hold this opin as well, & it was my credo for a long time AW]...well, we know you're not gay!!
True, the metal bands who have become mass-popular make tons of dough...but there are zillions of the same who are going NOwhere, according to that mindset...& some of them are prob actually good...but if it was all about $$ & chicks, Dave Weckl would've stopped progressing somewhere between the ages of 17 & 25 [& even at that age his playing could smoke some serious "chick's shorts"]...i guarantee you Weckl could slam dunk a metal gig, but 90% of metal drummers could not play as many diff styles as well as he, & as incredibly...[Donati might be an exception ]
PS - u prob shouldn't rag on Chick Corea here...actually, he does QUITE well at a living [solely at music], altho most Joe's may not see that...guaranteed he does better than you do SOLELY AT MUSIC [no other job included!]...& he is one of the most prolific musicians of this era or any era or style...& even HE listens to some rock & metal to check it out/stay open minded/keep abreast of the times, even tho it's not his playing style]...to poke fun of him is your right, but shows complete immaturity & lack of musical understanding...even back in my metal daze, I wouldnt DARE make such comments about a man of his musical stature...& in his bands he has turned out some of the most jaw-dropping musicians TO DATE...
...& after all, he IS a "chick," right?! ...
Having said that, tho, i welcome your additions to this board - it can prob keep me attuned to a style i otherwise wouldnt be acclamated to these days...i became bored w metal musically [but not always necessarily RHYTHMICALLY]
, altho there are some really good drummers playing the style today...
Peasch 'at, G...

Dude thanks for your support but I wasn't making fun of chick corea just simply stating a fact that he looks like Gary Delabte from the Howard Stern show. Yo yo yo yo keeping it real in da feel and in da club! Money and chicks it's what its all about word!
OK! [U may be right about THAT!] - lol
...i think a cat/dawg like Donati & the like are trying to "paint new colors" [for lack of better] into today's metal...& many of todays metal players have or do listen to jazz, fusion, & other styles, & incorporated elements of them into theyre playing...forgive my lack of memory, but there's a "metal" gtrst [from a mass-popular 'metal' or hard rock band] who actually recently did a jazz album, & it was not bad at all, IMHO...but i can't place his/the band's name...

BTW...fusion generally [musically] goes over the masses heads for many reasons; one being that, from an early age, we here [in the States, for one] are all exposed to radio & MTV type formats; whereas in some other countries, [while experiencing the same enigma], tend to have more broadebed & eclectic musical tastes...
English pop & the US much moreso r big on what sells...it's not nec about da music, it's about marketing & romanticism & selling an attitude to an age bracket [alltho it is often played by the best timekeepers/players & slickly produced]...
In summation, i guess u r right about it's all about $ [& chicks] ...we could ALL use "some a' 'dat!"

Bob Rules! The sensitivity level of some of the memebers is very high.... Who cares if someone is not into the same music that you are! We are here becaue of our love of drumming period. P.S. John Tesh is the bomb!
Lorenzini - LMFAO
Yanni could kick Tesh's Tush...
...in hair/moustache grooming...& exagerrated arm & head movements while playing keys w the other [like he's really accomplishing an incredulous feat], & throwing his hair back...[but then he's still rippin off of most 80's hair bands - THAT'S not even an orig thought ] ...
Hats off to Yawni, tho...he has enuf brains to HIRE good musicians [well, except for maybe that CAdams cat w the BR copy kit]...
...Kenny Gorelick would kick BOTH their tails...w that 1 riff towards the end of Songbird only...
Hey, guys - i have it!! A "Super-Dooper Group-er[or, Mullett]," feat. an all star line up of Tush AND Yawni, w Kenny G on sux, CAdams & Lombardo on double kits, & the bassist from Sabbath [Skeezer Buthol]...
Now ya knows wheres I'se stands

Money and chicks indeed. In a way, he's right. I stress about money, chicks, and school more than anything. But the fact is, none of them have to do with my drumming. Well...I guess drumming and chicks go together to the extent that when I'm playing dance classes I may make a "hot drummer face" if one of the little cuties glances at me while I'm playing. But that's all vanity crap. I'll tell you what turns me off to many fusion drummers...the sound of the drums. IMO, fusion over the years has produced some of the worst drum sounds in history. I love Dave's parts on the Electrik Band stuff, but the drums sound like ass. I find this to be the case on many fusion records from the 80s. I dig the more earthy, organic tones like Airto's drum sound on the first Return to Forever record. God, please go buy this if you don't have it! I see where Bob is coming from about metal ruling. On an emotional level, listening to metal gets me off harder than just about anything (providing it's not shitty metal.) But I would be bored to tears playing in such a situation, seemingly devoid of improvisation. I dunno, so many drum sounds just turn me completely off. I can't deal with heavily-processed, triggered sounds. Where's the personality there? When I really want to tune in to what I love most about this art form, just give me a little four-piece kit with Bill Stewart, Ari Hoenig, or Tain behind it.
Word It's the metel takeover of the fusionheads! Just kidding, but I'm gladd to see that this board is opening up to different styles, for awhile I was considering joining this board but because it seemed mainly a fusion type board I felt a little intimidated. But of course after joining I feel like I should have signed up long ago, this is definately the best drum discussion group on the net, even if sometimes there is a few idiots posting dumb things here and there I love you guys!
Here, here, Nikk... well put...
Weckl's drums do INDEED sound "like a**" on those recordings [his PLAYING is quite another topic, however ]...
While i sort-of like his drum sound today [& i know we beat this 1 to death too, a while back], i can think off many other drummers that have a much better recorded sound...for toms, Peart's on Power Windows [& some HYF] was nicer, & Simon's toms are WAY better... i just don't like those @#$%&*! white coated heads on toms [except for those musical styles or applications that require it, & except on a snare]...Vinnie's toms on Eric Marienthal's Crossroads' "Spoons" is da schid...ESP da 12"....

Does Henry Rollins count as metal? I love his stuff, and Sim Cain was actually a very good drummer. Come In and Burn had alot of cool grooves on it.
As stupid as your thought process and elaborationis(note:notice how you dig a hole for yourself by ADMITTING you're a mediocre player who can't appreciate high level of musicianship!). But in sum ways you're right, no matter what genre of music u analyze there's always gonna be sum "mediocre" bands coming from the genre and sum good ones, it doesn't matter if it's fusion, Drum & Bass, funk or ghetto rap whatever.
I'm sure Tommy Lee probably feels like he's expressing himself to his fullest in his own musical way. There is gonna be every kind of musical derivation that our imaginations can conjuer up from technique, language to equipment.
I can remember my mom taking me to a classic guitar teacher when I was 16 years old. This guy played some contrapuntal fingerpicking stuff for me and I was into rock so I laughed at him. He played his heart out for me and I thought it was lightweight for my taste. I had NO understanding of classical music or appreciation and was a snotnosed metal kid. He gave me a dirty look chuckled wistfully to himself and told my mom he wouldn't teach me, but later on he DID(I still have those Christopher Parkening books around.)
To me there's absolutely NO GROWTH in the metal community when it comes to language, versatility in application, and trust me I've heard pretty much everything from doom to extrem to speed to prog.
