The Darkness - what can ya tell me?

I just found out about these guys. So far I have gotten ahold of some of the stuff. Vocally they go from brilliant to pure shit! Musically, I feel like I am 16 and listening to the friggin' radio!!! I am not too sure what to think of them, but I kind of like them in a REAL fucked up way. But at the same time, I think they suck! LOL!!! I am sooooooooo damned confused. I know I should REALLY hate it, but like Andrew WK, I find it oddly appealing, and I think that says a TON about the music scene in the world! [img]graemlins/cry_smile.gif[/img]

O.K., "Get Your Hands Off My Woman" might just be one of the FUNNIEST damn songs I have ever heard!!! LOL!!! Over the top??? NAH!!! LOL!!!

"Growin' On Me" - Song of the year, quite possibly! That one friggin' RULES!!! Hit in the UK I hear, shame it will go unnoticed in the US.

I like their song Growing On Me. Good stuff. Yeah, I think they're very tongue in cheek. I dig 'em, though. Nothing threatening there. Black Shuck is probably their cheesiest song. btw, you ever seen their videos? Check that link above to watch several.

I also find it a bit funny that they have a nice, round, not more than, not less than 10 tracks on their cd. Don't know of many bands who do that anymore. You'll love the videos, btw. lol

Yeah, I'll be checking them out in a few minutes. I also see the CD is only 38 minutes long. Nice to see somebody not getting out of control and giving too much.

Who does the vocalist sound like? When he is just singing normal, and not squeeling he sounds like somebody from an old alternative band. If he used that voice all the time I would love them for sure.

Okay on the song Grow with Me...I hear some Robert Smith(Cure) on the vocals.

I hear some Smith at times, but that isn't who I am thinking of.

At times I hear The Toll, but I don't think that is it either. But there is some definite Toll there.

How about the Soup Dragons? Vox remind me of 'Diving Thing' sometimes.

Man, I haven't heard The Soup Dragons in close to 20 years!!! It had to be about '86-'87 that I last heard that band!

Seen the vids and I officially love this band! Now I love the vocalist. The guy is brilliant!

The singer sucks but I think the album is really funny!They'll go to Spain next December but I think thau just at the same time I will be celebrating my birthday in Canary Islands

Not a fan here, really. It's becoming fashionable to rave about them over here. I just can't take them serious, with those videos and vocals. Are all the trendy people in the UK really getting into rock, or do they just see the Darkness as a piss-take, a spoof band? Dare I say Spinal Tap?

I've seen them perform live on a UK tv show, and they can play, just wish they wouldn't package themselves as a laughing stock.

I think in time they will find a true identity. I just hope that they will realize that the identity will be one of a BIG ROCK band. If the vocalist learns to curb his voice, and use it when it is effective (ala Mercury, though The Darkness guy is nowhere in the same league as Freddie), he could be one of the best modern vocalists going. He has skill, and he has range, he is just too over the top, and not in a truely great way. But something about them appeals to me.

Knowing what her opinion of these guys is, I was wondering how long it would be before Spicey would comment on this thread. lol

Now what is it though, the vocals that you don't like? Musically these guys are great. Vocally they are 100% hit or miss. There are times where even his falsetto is friggin' great, and at other times horrendous.

I expect the whole thing started as a joke for them, but they have started to actually enjoy it all. Musically they are too good, and too damn dead on to be a "joke".

If they have been the mass storm in the UK that I have been reading about in the past day, I can see why some might be sick of them.

As for them being all tongue in cheek, as many have said in the articles I have been reading, many seem to forget that Freddie Mercury also had a keen sense of knowing what he was all about. He did much of his stuff with a sly wink. Now, granted, this guy doesn't have ANY of Mercury's brilliance, but hey, atleast somebody is giving raging hooks and loud guitars again.

as for what I don't like about them... EVERYTHING! I totally agree that the vocals stink like rotten eggs, but the music ain't that much better, I see them as a band only there to make money, trying to re-live something that isn't there anymore... to me, I feel like they're mocking what we stand for... is it all about making money and becoming famous??? All in all, what they're doin is playing chart music tripe to gain money and fame. Sorry, I just think this band is a joke n' I wish they'd just close the book.

How do you feel about Metal Shop? I find them a little more offensive (without hearing them, mind you), as they are FROM the scene, and admit it, but they still mock it.

The verdict is still out on if The Darkness is for real or not. I can see the vocalist turning REAL good if he cares enough to refine his voice. But I can also see them turning into a totally different animal on the next album, and the whole thing being a "we just try different styles on every album" type of BS.

Well I see the Queen comparison Carl...All indications are that the singer from The Darkness and Freddy Mercury have the same Dentist or lack there of."I believe in a thing called love" and "Growing on me" are actually pretty cool in a weird "I'm not sure but I think this sucks" kinda way.Much like Andrew WK.

I agree with you 100% Ash! LOL!!! Everytime I listen to them, I think to myself that I really should hate them because they really suck, but then I find myself 7 songs into it and enjoying it for some fucked up reason. I know they suck, I know I should hate everything about them, but for some reason...

Yep it's like the the first time I heard the Andrew WK album my response "This guy is a fuckin' joke the same riff is in every song...play it again." lol

You know...admittedly when i first heard this band and the vocalz i laughed my fucking bollockz off....but after a few more listens, i totally got into these guyz...seen em live and man they`re fucking tight!!

Some people say "Oh the next Spinal Tap!" etc...bullshit!! Theze guyz can fucking PLAY!!!lol! Justin`s guitar work is amazing(Yes i`d say even better than his brother!) and the whole band are talented as fuck, i just can`t find any reason to slag them off.

Also...if this band were around back in the dayz of NWOBH with bandz like Thunder etc, The Darkness would have topped em all.

Just my 2 penniez in anyway....ace band, tight az fuck live, fun az hell, great stage show,catchy songz and just what we need in this day and age with the TV and radio full of shite like Evanescence,Limp Bizkit etc.

I wish that were true!

Not really a fan, they seem to have taken the worst parts of the genre/style and made them the primary focus. So that kills comparisons to Queen/Thin Lizzy who despite occaisional gimmicks still held onto their sincerity.
But then they've got a sense of humour which is sadly lacking in rock bands today.
How long they'll last given the HUGE trendy hype is another thing too.
Credit to them for making it work though!
