A few days before Charley made a mess of Florida, Trav was musing about moving back.
Then just last night we decided we needed to make a road trip to South Carolina to decide if it's a viable retirement spot.
Charley. Gaston.
Coincidence? You decide.
That is a little bit spooky
This is where the weather map used to be.
Edited to return the screen to normal size.

For quite some time the southeastern United States has experienced a relatively calm period with regards to hurricanes. In that time period, areas like Florida have grown dramatically.
Should hurricane patterns return to the way they were during the earlier parts of the last century, the devastation will be remarkable.
LINK
If this storm stays on this track , the eye will pass about 25 miles north of my last house in Florida. When I built the house it was rated for 145 mph winds.
Located on the third dune (1st dune is the barrier islands)
Wood construction
Front faces southeast exposing the roof slope to the wind coming on shore
Studs 1 x 6 18" on center
Plywood siding (not press board)
All porch and overhangs cantilevered and integrated with the roof and floor trusses
Double hurricane straps at all joints
I wonder what will happen if it makes landfall as a category 5? Not that I want this to happen, as my youngest son lives about 5 blocks from there.
Hi from Tampa!!!
I'm outta here Friday night. This looks like it might get interesting. Maybe I'll stay just to see what it's like!

If you are implying that we should stay in Cincinnati, I just might have to ban you.
gae - Why would you want to live ANYPLACE except Cincinnati???????
You wouldn't really ban me, would you? Little ole me? (No comments, PLEASE!).
Sluggs...

oh, Jumper...don't let her kid you. She really wants to live in an unairconditioned hut in the Amazon.
What Jumper said, Sluggo. You ARE joking, right?
I can NOT wait to get out of this place. There's nothing good to eat.
The 'hood here in Northside is a bit rough around the edges, and Bob and I have talked at length about selling the house and moving. But where? I don't want a McMansion, and unless one gets far away from the city, the problems are the same.
Here we have miscreant black youths on foot. Out in corn country (Milford, Oxford) there are teenagers in old pickup trucks. Living here I can simply go outside and stare them down (and yes, I did that just yesterday.) In corn country I'd have to chase them down. And yanno, ammo gets expensive.
Pledging to never ban Sluggo, however misguided she may be about Cincinnati.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">1) You obviously haven't been to Slim's. (And what, North Carolina is the Center of the Food Universe???)Quote:

2) That's what you get for buying a house on the corner in an iffy neighborhood. Never buy a house on the corner. I don't care where you live, the corner is the gathering place for assholes. Even worse in an iffy neighborhood.
Because reason is smart, he purposely bought a house in the middle of the street.

Trust me, you do NOT want to stick around and experience it first hand if it heads here. They shut down flights after a certain time (9pm on 08/12 when Charley was bearing down on us) Traffic is an unbelievable nightmare. If it heads this way leave sooner if anything...
Three concentric eyewalls and pressure at 935 MB, this could become one bad ass strom.

TCDAT1
HURRICANE FRANCES DISCUSSION NUMBER 30
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
5 AM EDT WED SEP 01 2004
REPORTS FROM THE LATEST AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER MONITORING FRANCES SHOW MAXIMUM FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS AT 700 MB OF 123 KT...DOWN A LITTLE FROM THE EARLIER FLIGHT. HOWEVER...THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS DROPPED TO 935 MB. BASED ON THIS...THE INITIAL INTENSITY WILL REMAIN 120 KT FOR THIS ADVISORY. THE WSR-88D AT SAN JUAN SHOWS THAT FRANCES HAS CONCENTRIC EYEWALLS...AND THE AIRCRAFT DATA SHOWS THREE CONCENTRIC WIND MAXIMA. INDEED...ON THE LATEST PASS THROUGH THE SOUTHEASTERN QUADRANT THE HIGHEST WIND WAS IN THE MAXIMA ASSOCIATED WITH THE OUTER EYEWALL.
THE INITIAL MOTION IS A WOBBLY 285/15. FRANCES REMAINS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF A SUBTROPICAL RIDGE WHICH LARGE-SCALE MODELS FORECAST TO WEAKEN SOMEWHAT OVER THE NEXT 72 HR. THIS SHOULD ALLOW THE HURRICANE TO MOVE WEST-NORTHWESTWARD IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA. DYNAMICAL MODEL GUIDANCE AGREES WITH THIS SCENARIO...EXCEPT FOR THE GFDL WHICH CONTINUES TO CALL FOR A UNREALISTIC LOOKING MOTION TOWARD THE NORTHWEST. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST THROUGH 72 HR IS SHIFTED A LITTLE WEST OF THE PREVIOUS TRACK BASED MAINLY ON THE INITIAL POSITION AND MOTION AND IS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DYNAMICAL GUIDANCE. AFTER 72 HR...THERE IS DIVERGENCE IN THE GUIDANCE AS A SHORTWAVE RIDGE DEVELOPS NORTH OF FRANCES OVER THE EASTERN UNITED STATES. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK FOR THAT TIME IS SHIFTED TO THE SOUTHWEST OF THE PREVIOUS TRACK...ALTHOUGH NOT AS FAR AS THE UKMET WHICH MARCHES FRANCES WESTWARD ACROSS CENTRAL FLORIDA AND INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO.
THE INTENSITY FORECAST IS MODIFIED ONLY SLIGHTLY FROM THE PREVIOUS PACKAGE. UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE FAVORABLE THROUGH AT LEAST 36-48 HR...SO FRANCES SHOULD REMAIN STRONG. A SLIGHT WEAKENING IS
INDICATED AT 72 HR BASED ON LAND INTERACTION AND SOME POSSIBLE WESTERLY SHEAR. THE MAIN CONTROLLING FACTOR ON INTENSITY WILL BE THE STRUCTURE OF FRANCES AND CONCENTRIC EYEWALL CYCLES...BOTH OF WHICH ARE DIFFICULT AT BEST TO TIME. GIVEN THE CURRENT STRUCTURE OF THE HURRICANE...CHANGES IN INTENSITY WILL LIKELY BE RELATIVELY SLOW TO OCCUR.

gae, Jumper, reason & misguided JDF - YES!!!!!!! I was kidding!!!!!! The ONLY reason we stay in Cheviot/Cincinnati is because almost all our kids are here AND ALL the grandkids are here. THE ONLY REASON!!!!!!!!

I don't know about you, but if I lived anywhere in the state of Florida I'd be leaving about now. Tennessee would be looking pretty good at this point.
This would be cool - if a giant wind knocked "Spaceship Earth" (the big golf ball at EPCOT) off its tee!
My best friend lives S of Melbourne. She can't leave because she's the Asst City Mgr and is considered "necessary personnel". Hope she's ready! I know she's scared.

Good luck getting out.
In Rockledge, about 45 miles southeast of Orlando, Brevard County told at least 50,000 residents to start evacuating mobile homes and barrier islands Thursday afternoon. In Stuart about 85 miles south, Martin County planned to urge up to 7,500 residents to evacuate low-lying areas starting at noon Thursday. More evacuation orders along Florida's east coast were likely.

5 AM update:
FRANCES REMAINS A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 145 MPH... 235 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 80 MILES...130 KM... FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 185 MILES...295 KM. SAN SALVADOR IN THE BAHAMAS IS CURRENTLY REPORTING WINDS TO 52 MPH...83 KM/HR.
THE LATEST MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE REPORTED BY THE HURRICANE HUNTER IS 939 MB...27.73 INCHES.
STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 6 TO 14 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS... ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING WAVES...CAN BE EXPECTED NEAR THE EYE OF FRANCES ON THE WEST SIDE OF ELEUTHERA ISLAND...AND
ON THE NORTH SIDE OF GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND. STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 4 TO 6 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS CAN BE EXPECTED ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE OTHER ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS.
RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 5 TO 10 INCHES...LOCALLY HIGHER...ARE POSSIBLE IN ASSOCIATION WITH FRANCES.
So far each significant land mass it has encountered it has been pushed slightly to the north (other than smaller islands) so I think once it hits Florida it will get deflected north-northeast more than the current tracking projections. Regardless it's going to be one wet and nasty weekend down here. Jumper and I had planned on lunch and then dinner and go to the beach this evening. He was still at the airport at 10am this morning waiting for the last available seat he was supposed to be on at 9:30. I hope he has a safe flight back.
Based on the size of this monster it looks like it could even give you a soaking up there in Ohio by mid week next week.

His company told him to come back. Otherwise he may have been stranded here. So many people are fleeing the state and the Orlando airport is closing (if it isn't closed already) Tampa International is being flooded by people trying to get flights.Quote:

Florida is not the place to be for this storm.
I talked to Trav's younger son earlier today, and I'm happy to report that Michael has a plan.
He?s going to board up his apartment this afternoon, and stock the bathtub with beer. He said he?s about a mile inland from the evacuation line, and if he?s forced to leave his apartment, he?s taking his dog and going back to the restaurant where the works. As he said, it?s a big building and there?s plenty of food and drink.
He also had the foresight to buy renter?s insurance. Yesterday.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sorry, but from past experience, your going to get hammered. Regardless what your house is made of, there are only four points where it's anchored to the ground.Quote:

Go where? There are no hotel rooms to be had anywhere in the area. No shelters accept pets and I am NOT leaving my dogs behind. The friend I stayed with last time is actually much nearer its current projected path than I am (by 60 miles in fact) Que sera, sera.

Most of the 1.2 million residents who were told to leave were in South Florida ? 300,000 in Palm Beach County, 250,000 in Broward County and 320,000 in Miami-Dade County. To the north, Brevard County told 185,000 residents to leave, and Volusia County told 120,000.
States of emergency were declared in Florida and Georgia.
Try Northeast Georgia.
