Playing with a calculator the other night I arrived at a figure that I suspect is an average that Neil Peart takes home per show. After taxes and overhead it's about fifty grand. The only other drummer I can think of who may have this kind of cash is Charlie Watts. The Beatles always have had money woes so I don't think Ringo's bank account is as rosy as Neil's or Charlie's. I'm sure JR Robinson, Simon and Vinnie have probably banked a couple mill apiece though they might not be that rich on paper after homes, cars, and ex-wives.
When Bonham died he was worth a mere million and a half after 12 years' work with Led Wallet, a mighty low figure considering Bonzo's cars were figured into that figure.
But I'm talking living drummers here. Who do you think has the biggest 'pocket'?

I don't know, but typically actual band members will make WAY more than professional sidemen.
Sidemen typically don't get record royalties, publishing royalties, or merchandise money from tours.
I'm sure Neil is comfortable. But I wouldn't be surprised if a less conspicuous drummer in a more successful band that sells more records than Rush is making far more than Neil. And guys like Vinnie and JR are down several tiers from that.

I agree, Mr. A, and chose this topic to have dialogue like your response. Would you name some bands you think are banking more money than Rush that don't have names like Kid Rock (which I believe is a sideman gig)? I'm curious about this and not looking for arguments, just opinions. I use Rush ONLY as an example because they're well beyond paying any record company advances back and are totally autonomous, etc.

Joey slipped my mind, good one, and Max Weinberg, yeah. Saw him on Conan last night and he was smoking some doublehand crossovers. I imagine Hart & Kreutzmann are rolling in Deadhead dollars now that I think about it.

i think carter beauford or the u2 drummer probably makes the most amount of money. they have the biggest tours.
vinnie/JR: $2000/hr per session? (i have no idea, i'm pulling that number out of my butt)
dave matthews band: $1,000,000 per show?

Matthews and U2, forgot them too, thank you. Lots of great answers from everybody. I remember Vinnie telling MD he wasn't a thousand dollar a day session man about ten years ago.
I'd do just about anything (that didn't involve any of my orifices) for two grand an hour!

This is a good topic. I think Peart is right up there at the top. I'll bet Bill Bruford made quite a mint between Yes and King Crimson. I'd like to know if a guy like Peart shares an equal slice of the pie or if he gets more as a lyric writer. Just curious.

Eddie Bayers, king of the Nashville country session clique, is probably as flush as Vinnie and JR.
In Mick Fleetwood's book he said he snorted all his 70s profits and declared bankruptcy and hasn't flourished since. Although he still drums I doubt he laughs as much on the way to the bank as he used to.
Stewart Copeland makes a handsome living with his soundtrack work but the Doors and the jam band with Trey and Les Claypool probably haven't generated piles and piles for him; although Jon Fishman ought to be one fat rat.
Some rock magazine got Stink, Andy and Stew cornered in one room together a couple of years ago for some hilarious, world-class bickering. One particular sore spot was when ol' G. Sumner flung the fact that he was a multi-millionaire in his ex-bandmates' faces. Copeland responded with: "Fuck you and your millions of dollars, Sting." That's the basis of my reasoning.

All rock stars with longevity are loaded. I hear Lars is super-rich. Carter is loaded too, because Dave splits royalties equally. I'm sure Joey from Aerosmith is really rich, as is Charlie. Tommy Lee certainly leads a wealthy lifestyle.

It's a silly statement to say a band like RUSH does not have to pay back and advance on recording, Def Leppard has made WAY more coin than RUSH and they STILL have to payback before they can recoup or make any profit.

I was talking about the initial record company advance for gear, clothes, wages, and whatnot; not album-by-album recording costs. I am not given to silly statements and I know my song well before I start singing, Randy.

It has a lot to do with how bands divide publishing, for example: the chili peppers divide everything equal, so Chad Smith gets as much as the others. Now that record sales are slowing down, any famous band makes their money on the road though. esp. on merchandise.

...My guess is that Rush splits everything pretty much 3rds, but u raise an interesting ? regarding NP's drumming AND lyrics [& speaking the word "Subdivisions" on Signals & live sample, even tho Alex "mouths"/fakes it live [img]wink.gif[/img] ]; but then Geddy sings all vox, plays bass, keys, & pedals...Lifeson plays gtr & pedals [awa the occasional live comical vocal [img]wink.gif[/img] ]

I would strongly imagine Rush splits everything 3 ways, Neil writing lyrics, but Alex and Ged writing music. A Big factor that comes into net worth is how well the person invested, and saved, as opposed to coking and screwing their money away. It's the old "VH-1 Behind The Music", where Peter Frampton gets a million dollar check for "Frampton Comes Alive", and then his girlfriend cokes/parties most of it down the drain, he gets pissed, and drives his Ferrari into a telephone pole.
It's funny... They went on to say he then lost a ton of money in the "Stock Market Crash of '87", and that's why he's on the skids today. What... did he sell everything the day after the crash?!?!?
If a Bonzo was still alive, and took his million and socked it away in some sound investments, say back in '75, he'd be worth around 10 million today....... (assuming an 8% return, and NO other money invested.)

Whoever said a drummer in a band will make more than a sideman is exactly right. That doesn't mean a sideman can't make good money. I'm pretty sure Vinnie is around $2K per day, depending on length/days of gig, plus cart and etc.
I know that Bruce wanted Porcaro to tour on the Human Touch tour (I THINK that's what it was called, Philly soundtrack days) and was offering 7 figures... That was the summer Jeff passed away. Makes me wonder what would have happened if Jeff took that gig.

I talked to a Polygram representative who told me that for the Kiss reunion of 1996, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley were hired as sidemen and got 2M$ each for the tour. Nothing compared to Gene and Paul who made 20M$ each for this tour because they own the band.
2M$ is not bad for Peter and Ace who were taken out of garbages, but it's probably all snorted and drunk by now...

Pretty much correct. I heard Ace and Pete only made 1mil though. But yes they were only side guys and Peter split for a short time to hold out for more money so Eric Singer came in and donned the makeup. Now Ace is gone and Tommy Thayer longtime Kiss associate is wearing the space.
When Journey replaced Steve Smith and Ross Valory for the Raised on Radio tour, it was reported that Mike Baird became financially secure once the tour was over.
Deen Castronovo is doing very well for himself in the new Journey, but I'm not going to discuss figures for that would be uncool.
For guys like Vinnie and JR Robinson, Gadd, not only do they get union scale but they can command their own pay. Porcaro did. He was offered by both Dire Straits and Springsteen huge numbers and then Jeff not really wanting to tour asked for the million mark, they would have paid it but Jeff at the time just wanted to hang with his family. Plus Kingdom of Desire was about to come out.
