www.sabian.com has a large update/interview with the man himself.....under "artists" and "artist news"....
he mentions his new book to accompany the new dvds.....anyone know about it or when its being released?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No. Not really.Quote:
Have you ever wanted to get up on stage with Black Sabbath and have a blast?
ROFLMAO! then he mentions Sting as someone with integrity...RIIIIIIIIIGHT
Anyways pretty cool interview, I like the evolution line especially the o-zone crash, cool concept, I know most guys aren't fond of it but ohhh well
Truth be told I rather play the A Customs

I would be interested in hearing why you think Sting has no integrity.

[Temporary aside]:
When Sting can't get Vinnie for his gig, he should get Weckl...& if not that; then Dennis, Novak, Husband, or Kennedy...[or Omar, again, even ]...
...[At least we know he has some integrity in da "Vin" area ]....

Weckl certainly sounded like he was offering his percussive services to Sting in that interview. Hopefully Sting will get the hint.
IMAGINE.......weckl with sting.....oh my god. THAT would be sooo cool! i rekon weckl would bring a whole new shade to it.....sting was going on and on about how he wanted the drums quieter....weckl would do that and add all the colour that he has......bliss!
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">HAHAHAHA...hilarious!Quote:

Weckl's Live and Very Plugged In arrived in the mail today and I hope my jaw doesn't fall off from smiling so big. It's that good. And his drum sound is better than anybody's.
Good to see you again, Me2!
DW's L&VPI is some WAY WHACK STOOOOPIT shift [as usual; or 'worse than usual', eeeven]....

Thanks 5. Everybody should get daves live double cd its the Biz, 5's spot on as usual.
vinnies on 4 tracks of Richard bonas latest, jazz brushes and one drop reggae, great sound too. garlic anyone?
It's difficult to express how good Weckl's new live double CD is. I'm on the second disk now. And it only cost $14.99! I've been contemplating getting the Sun Ra Sextet Live at the Village Vanguard that's gathering dust at my local music store, a single CD for $17.99. Beaver Harris is the drummer and whereas I've heard of him, I've never heard him play.
I think if Weckl played on a Robert Plant album, he'd sound fine with Sting. Is it all that outboard gear or is it Weckl's deft touch on his Yamahas that make him sound so good? If I thought I could get some Recording Customs that'd sound that good I'd lose my current kit.
Weckl just did a clinic here on Tues....couldn't make it but had a friend make a very nice recording....He is very adamant about doing his own sound..PERIOD! He has an incredible ear for EQ'ing...almost not human! That combined with his incredible finesse makes it all the more gratifying to the listener..
It's not just on record that Dave gets all that fat compression and splendid nuance. I acquired a bootleg video from ______ and Dave's live sound was equal to his records, in a cavernous hall no less!
Weckl has EQ elephant ears, you are right on, sash, about that.
Yeah,Weckl says"I don't want anyone else in control of my sound because it's MY sound!" I remember the Akoustic Band coming through in '89. A couple of friends and I were standing right next to him watching him warm-up and sound check...Funny shit..He kept walking over to the monitor guy and tweaking knobs, calling out frequencies to diminish and this cat was lost. Weck was pissed...He probably got up 30 times to take care of his mix...I still laugh when I think about all of the stuff he was mumbling in between trips....funny but a reality..for him
Sashal, I am envious. I've yet to see Dave BUT I WILL. Did you get to stay that close for the Akoustic show? That must've been otherworldly. I'm playing Weckl's solo over and over from his new CD----from brushes to sticks to bliss in just 8 minutes.
Actually, I did watch from the side of stage next to him...They were pretty exhausted from doing an earlier show in Monterey. He was struggling a little(I say struggling by his standards!)an some of the material from Three Quartets..I actually have him saying "SHIT!" when he missed a big Chick dramatic downbeat at the end...you know CRASH....fill...CRASH,CRASH....space...CRASH! He was trying to find some humor though when a moth landed on one of his toms while he was almost sleeping during a long Chick intro...he simply reached over and flicked it to it's death...great finger technique,I might add!
LMFBO, s3.
Yeah, i was doing a gig on Sannibel Island, FL, back around '90-91 when CCAB came thru within 25 min of that [2 wk long] club gig...i read about it the DAY OF within a couple of hrs. of the show, when it was too late to make arrangements ... i heard after that it TOO was 1 of those intimate, you-can-"sit within 5 ft. of the band" type gigs, like the 1 you described [& like the CCAB"2" Tokyo BluNt w Vin]...
...Also reminds me of the CAB show w Virg that i just missed but couldve seen in Chicago recently...[another slob-sob story]...
...AND the MStern Trio w DW & JAndrews that i was here in town for, but missed, around '97-8...[can ya tell i have issues w these 3? Huh? CAN YA?!]...OK, i know we're not supposed to "live in the past"..."you caaaan't go baaaack"...
Oh, to be a fly on the wall, then...
or a moth on the receiving end of a finger-control "flickl"...

OKAY! I ADMIT IT! [I'm that, too, sometimes ]...
[Hey, 5...watch'er mowf, son - he uses that wicked finger control on that HAIR TOO, bub]....

Just follow the sounds of Oh Sherrie into perpetuity, fuser, take a left at the SWAT Team and I'm in the second cell on the right. Your pink zebra Tee awaits, two sizes too tight. This is Hades I'm talking about: no ice water, no beer, no Vinnie, plenty of Journey.
Well, 5, it's "not the DESTINATION that counts, but da JOURNEY," eh?!
But WHAT?! No BEER?! OH, deer... You mean I'll be looking at you in your peenk Z-T WITHOUT da beergoggles?!!
OKAY!! I'm out!!
You don't have to worry about me, I promise you but what if Perry sees you in those Slaughter floss bikini bottoms? When he says he's got your back he probably means it. Beware!
Funny you should mention Sherrie...I actually know her...she lives in Bakersfield and back in the day Steve would be seen at the Red Lion lounge. He is originally from Hanford which is only an hour north of Bakersfield....but now that I think about it the whole San Juaquin Valley is HELL in the summertime...literally,it's the doors to Hades
Sash, is that the REAL Sherrie in the video?
That is,in fact, her. One of these days I'll tell you some funny shit about that! Put it this way, she's a f'ing directors nightmare. Steve insisted on her being in that video..primadonna's.
The "I'm Steve Perry's girlfriend and my poop don't stink" paradigm, huh? The girls in my office back then used to nauseate me talking about him. But I'm done rippin' on the guy, Fuse & Five were just having a little fun.
Thanks for the info, duders. Got any more neat Weckl stories? I've listened to that new CD all afternoon and WOW!!
Unfortunately,I don't have anymore COOL Weckl stories...just bad experiences after that .I'll always love his playing and that is all that matters...great musical memories... bad personal ones.
Weckl in sting would be a nightmare.
It would be like Garabaldi in the beatles, doin the oakland submarine.

Circa '84...somebody had to!
Here's my DW story (imagine if he really played them type of skins!)
A few years after this photo, with Chick, & Patitucci, the boys played at my college. I was the senior rep for shows and stuff. I had no idea...just another gig at the time for me.
Hours before the show, I had to help get things in order. I was driving around with one of the guys on Chick's team. He started talkin' about this new drummer, "Wait til you see this guy...he's really somthin'"
I decided to call my drum teacher at the time who was studying with Jeff Hamilton. Last minute, there was a problem with the sound and we jammed to get Chick some type of cable he needed. I got there late but my seat was front row center. I hooked up with my drum teacher and looked around. The hall was packed and all these rock head drummers in LA showed up. "Hmmmm, maybe this is the place to be???"
Dave played and all my instructor could say is, "This guy played some of the most intense music and never dropped a bead of sweat! Can you believe that man?" He also thought JP was the best thing in the band.
Time slipped by, maybe ten years, and then I got into Weckl. It dawned on me that it was that guy I helped set up back in college!

Know what's funny? That young, whipper-snapper in that picture was bustin' some serious a** even way back then!
Hey Stavis,
you wouldn't happen to be drummer Steve Davis of Lynn Arriale fame would you? If so, you're a beast and I love the record you did on double-time with Richie Beirach and Francois Moutin!
Talking about Weckl, I recently spoke to the manager of the drumshop who brought Dave for a Sabian clinic a couple months ago. He told me about the 2 weeks of headaches he had before the clinic working with what he called "the insane and infinite list of gear and special requests" that Dave wants for a clinic.
Dave doesn't carry anything for a clinic and he needs his exact same setup with the exact item numbers and year of fabrication: drums, heads, sticks, cymbals, hardware, bells, percs, mics, electronics, ear monitoring...
A store doesn't have all the brands and stores in my area don't have large inventories of high-end pro equipment . He had to shop alot to get each and every little piece of gear.
I understand that Dave is sponsored but is he obligated to do so.
It also extends to the brand, size and number of water bottles, towels and temperature of the hall. Dave said: "The hall is at 31 degrees and I asked for 30 degrees, get me a fan!" They finally found a fan. "Not enough, get me 2 fans!"
Well, the results for us Weckl fans attending the clinic is an amazing sound and performance but the drumshop manager said: "You don't wanna be the guy spending all day trying to please him".
It's not like Dom who's a "no problem" guy and who's only request for a sabian clinic is: Sabian cymbals.
But now being an international drum star , I think Dave deserves the right to get what he wants just like a diva singer. I just wish that someday I could do that or maybe I'll remain a "no problem" guy, who knows.
Dave was totally satisfied with how it went, but you only know it at the end of the clinic.
P.S.: It's not finished. After the clinic they went to a good restaurant and, not surprisingly, nothing on the menu pleased Dave. So then again he asked for special orders with this but not that and a little bit of pesto...
I'll stop, it's gettin into gossip.
