True you get higher resolution, faster cue on scenes and other things. But if your kid is able to open the package and scratch it, no matter what you use to restore it, won't be the same. At least VHS had a plastic protection.
If I recall correctly, the firsts PC CD's were inside a plastic cover that you inserted into the PC, that way no fingerprint, dust, dirt or scratch will happen......
ya know i was thinking the same thing last night, i rented monster and when i went to watch it it wouldn't play so i took it out and it looked like a kid with sticky hands had been playing with it.
They were in protective cases, but that was also before a ton of advances in the technology to keep the spinning of the CD stable in the burn/read process.
You could still get into them and damage the disk if you wanted to back then.
Shame your DVD got messed up - guess you are going to have to put them on a higher shelf! [img]smile.gif[/img]

...yet another reasoning to stop breeding. That and the whole overpopulation of the planet, alarming rate of consuming limited resources, impending environmental catastrophe and/or mass famine thing...yeah.
Let's just say they're no any more vulnerable to damage than tapes... my 18month old daughter has no problem lifting the plastic flap and yanking the innards out of a VHS cassette...
...not to mention I haven't had a DVD player eat one of my DVDs or have a DVD wear out from watching it too many times... [img]wink.gif[/img]

The pro's of a DVD vs. VHS definately outweigh the cons.
Amen. And you also really have to work pretty hard to damage a DVD badly enough to cause it not to play. Depending on the player of course - my Denon tends to be picky about a single fingerprint, whereas the Toshiba will play them right up to the point they're actually cracked.

Well, for 480p quality, I really prefer Denon over all others. But they are damn picky about the disk being clean.
The Toshiba's I've had have been real workhorses too. I've had two portable Toshiba's, and they can really take a beating and keep on ticking.
And I just got a new great DVD player - the Zenith DVB318. It upscales to 1080i over component, and works great. At $200 or less, it's also a great buy. I wouldn't use it for 480p, but if you have a HD ready tv with the 180i component in, you might want to check it out.

the beta test version hd-dvd solved that problem.
denon players do rule. i have a dvd-5900 and i wouldnt trade it for the world.

I just like Toshiba because A. it did what I wanted it to, and B. it continued doing that thing reliably for a truly insane amount of time.
I neither know nor care about all the nitpicky tech stuff...I suppose my senses just aren't finely-tuned enow to see/hear these differences... [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
DA - in the right set up, you would, trust me. This isn't like psycho-audiophiles who seem to care more about the speced performance than what they can actually hear. There are big differences, although you have to have the right set up to be able to tell easily.

...yet ANOTHER reason that copying of DVDs SHOULD BE ALLOWED! Copy it, store the master, and use the copy. If your kids deceide to scratch a happy face onto the surface, at least you could make ANOTHER copy.
