Hello,
I have been playing drums for around 8 years and I know I?m probably not at the point that I should be if I were taking lessons all those 8 years. So... I was wondering if anyone could help critique or give some simple pointers to help me get smoother/better in certain or all areas of my playing(Especially the jazz stuff.. which you can see where I?m at in the 2 video's).
I am going to get with a teacher in my area sometime before the end of the year, but until then... any help is help [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
The newer videos I made about 1 month ago...
The page is definitely a starter page... seeing that it is with Geocities and I am only using Templets for the borders and stuff [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Yeah, sorry the videos aren't working for those of you who use Mac.
I need to get my brother to help me on that technical stuff... Hopefully I can have it going for you all in the next day or two.
I haven't listen to much of David Garibaldi, but now that you mention it, it does sound "kinda" similar to some of his stuff.

Hey Johnny, nice playing man - I like your style! As for getting into or improving your jazz time, I would simply say LISTEN to as many recordings as possible and digest all the information. You are obviously a talented and diligent player who is happy to sit down and practice slowly and methodically as that comes across in your videos, so keep listening to the jazz greats. Elvin, Tony, Blakey, Bill Stewart, Jack, Philly Jo, Tain, Erskoman, Sonny Payne etc etc etc....
Remember that the ride is the main voice in jazz drumming and that should be your primary focus. Forget about clever comping for now and simply try to get a swinging ride feel with 2&4 on the HiHat. Good luck and have fun!

are envying?
I look at you approach and
the first thing I see is the
way you hit the drums. That
curl in your wrist almost
hurts to look at but you're
using it. It must not bother
you. Otherwise, you'd have
dropped it, by now.
I like how you're trying to
emphasize the groove. You
should. That's the most im-
portant thing.
With that body, I think I
think that you would be a
prime candidate for open-
handed playing.
Burying the beater is some-
thing I am not particularly
fond of. I'd like to see
you work on your double-
strokes on the kick. You
need to develop some rout-
ines that are groove-orient-
ed and that would also help
develop the kick.
THE KICK IS EVERYTHING.

I thought you sounded good. (good angle for the videos too btw)
The kink is your left wrist does look a little uncomfortable though as Pete pointed out, it must not be or you wouldn't be doing it. Still, I'd at least experiment with flattening that kink out. (or try trad [img]tongue.gif[/img] )

For 8 years and no lessons, this is pretty impressive as you look very natural on the kit. You have good technique and smooth and solid playing, mature sounding! I like the choice of cymbals you have - evolution crashes and K ride (what kind is that? dry ride?).
My only critique would be that your left hand is a little too arched, and that your gear is very close together - mgiht want to play with some space... looked cramped. ALso your jazz feel was a little stiff... in need of more nuance and dynamics (something I am working on too).
Otherwise, lookin and sounding good bro!

Well... I will try working on getting that Krick and Arch out of wrist now. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
I used to have cramps in my middle forarm all the time so I straightend my wrist out a bit since then, but I guess a little more could help. Me, not having a teacher, is alot harder to notice the little(or in my case, Major [img]tongue.gif[/img] ) flaws in my own playing unless I have guys like you all who can give me input from time to time. Thnx
I,ll try to get some live footage up sometime within the next 4 or so weeks.. Also, my brother says the reason some Mac users arent able to see the video is because you need the newest version of Windows Media Player

What is this? Progressive Gospel? It sounds like Tool meets Peter Gabirel and Church (not the band!). Interesting! I really dig all the dynamics and polyrythems... not to mention the slick camera work. This looks like a rather large production. Your playing looks very relaxed and mature! Well done!

Your vids are definately happening. I use to play in a christian rock band for a couple years, but it was nowhere near that quality. That crowd was groovin' too.
