Saw something about Cunningham yesterday, that man who directed some very weird musicvideo's and commercials (Aphex Twin - windowlicker, portishead, the playstation commercial with that alien girl) you might know his work.
Now there was this interview with a guy, and he said "The shot where the monster is screaming in the old woman's face is the strongest shot ever recorded in the history of musicvideo's. Period." (he said something along the lines of that. I also saw the shot (out of context) and I have to admit, it was fucking awesome. Very, well, 'strong'.
What is the best shot, or visual for that matter, in your opinion? Doesn't matter if you prefer mise en scene or the simple cinematography of it. Also bear in mind wether the shot's so strong within the context or not.
I have yet to come up with one.

For me the end of 'All Quiet On The Western Front' has to be up there. Where the soldier reaches for the butterfly.

Off the top of my head...
An old silent film, Un Chien Andalo, which shows a close-up of a razor blade slicing an eyeball. Looks real (but it's not of course).
Second one would be watching the footage of the WTC employees having to jump out of the burning building. Probably the worst thing I've ever seen in my life.

Wow......This is making me think. There are so many images that are powerful for a whole range of reasons.
Hiroshima after the bomb. The divers in Olympiad. There are images from things I have seen or places I have been that were/are very powerful in my head.
This question will depend on such an array of varibles it is almost impossible to answer.
Good Luck
-
well, this is probably not what you mean...because it is not powerful in an emotional way....it's just a scene that has stuck in my head, so at the risk of seeming incredibly shallow....
the last scene in Oceans Eleven (the original) after the funeral, and when it becomes obvious that the money is gone....it's set outside a diner, and begins with one character leaning against a post, lighting a cigarette. then in a series of cuts, 5 other members of the gang appear one by one.
the whole thing lasts just a few seconds and is composed better than a painting by an old master....plus it has fantastic lighting and very sharp suits!
if you want an example of 50s/60s cool...this is it.

Off the tp of my head...
Planet of the Apes, ending
Fellowship of the Ring, Intro
American History X, The Arrest of Derek
2001: A space oddysey, From Bone to Starship
-
Difficult question, very difficult.
The intro of Contact stays with me, but the whole sequence not any single image.
I agree that the events of 9/11 will forever mark my mind, being it is the first catastrophe in my lifetime that recieved so much media attention and has had tangible consequences on a global scale.
I think most memorable images are attached to tragedy, cruelty and ugliness. I can't think of anything 'happy'.
-
Ok.. if were not talking films then
- 9/11
- Little Vitnamees girl with napalm
- Vietnamese shot through the head
- Bhudist monks burning themselves
- Hindenburg
- The three people holding on to one of the worlds first airbaloons... letting go too late (nasty shit)
- Saddam with getting an exam
- and "Ladies and Gentleman - We've got him"
-
The Columbine security tapes I saw on 60 minutes. And that Bunuel eye slicing thing was pretty good. Maybe we should keep it to artificial images, not the ones that are like news footage...

The first time I saw double penetration.

Shawshank Redemption after Tim Robbins sneaks out of jail and he's in the rain with his hands lifted up to the sky.

American History X - "Eat the Curb"
Also... "Welcome to the Terrordome" has a really nasty scene where Saffron Burrows is pregant and these neo-nazis kick the crap out of her for dating an African!
Only ever seen that film once on late-night Channel 4... disturbed the hell out of me!!!
Most sickening non-fiction thing I've seen is Bud Dwyer's Suicide... those images stuck with me for days!!!
WATERSHED WARNING! Don't download the Bud Dwyer movie clip, unless you really want to see it!
-
just tell me what happens ! i need to know but don't wanna get the clip .lol

in "little big man" there is this one shot where the US cavalry just got done killing all these indians, and the camera focuses on the cavalry band, but the camera is in front of a fire, so you get that heat, blurry effect...and then it cuts to dustin hoffman's broken face, in tears...all of this in silence

The goatse scene in Pink Flamingos. That is, by far, the most abominable thing I have ever seen in a movie.
Though Raab Himself running the mile in CKY3 is a close second.
If we're talking reality, the video of an Arab being punished for rape probably ranks up high. I'll give you a hint: if they cut off your hand for stealing in Saudi Arabia with a broadsword, how do you think they would react to a rapist?
The video of the Russian soldier being decapitated by Afghan rebels is rather disenchanting.
I remember a scene from Oz where Guard Brass slices open Morales' "Achilles Heel" while the other guards hold him down. Couldn't even stand for hours after seeing that. It was even worse than when Martinez doused Officer Brass with his own bodily excrement.
However, these are just the absolute worst I could think of, though they've done their job of affecting me emotionally, and physically, they really don't fall into your definition. The final shot in this movie does.

fiction: there are some great shots in requiem for a dream. The old woman walking the snowy curb, totally lost is one of the best.
Damn, fiction's hard. We're being spoiled with too many great shots all the time.
non fiction: i bet you've all seen the poster. It's worldwar II, and the german officer leaps over the barbed wires. Great stuff. (the clip)
Jay Morriaty's wipe out at one of the big waves contests. It's the wave that made him a legend.

The Ending of T2, Where the T800 (Arnie) is being lowered into the molten steel. As his hand is almost in the steel, he does a "thumbs up". I love that shot...
-
Off the top of my head only one comes to mind...
At first is a shot of a ballot ticket for an election.
WIDER: Two metal claws comes into view. Picks up the ticket.
WIDER: The claws are the prosthetic extension of someone's feet.
WIDER: The person, with no arms and no legs places the ticket into a ballot box.
Can't remember where I saw it but that image always sticks with me.

Do you people get payed to come up with these
lame fanboy threads?
FFS get a fucking life... That reminds me, I've
got better things to be doing than trolling about
on this forum. Chin CHin!

Of course we get paid. I get a check cut to me every two weeks.
$100 per post.
I'm supposed to be getting a raise pretty soon. We really oughta unionize.
-
Probably Travis Bickle, drenched in blood, poitning with his finger to his head like a gun in a final last stand against the cops, beckoning them on to shoot him dead.
If not that, then the scene in Amelie where Audrey Tautou breaks creme brulee with a spoon. Really is that simple.
Real Life-9/11. Simple as that.
-
Oh, and of course, the scene in The Matrix where Neo stops the bullets. Tampered to Hell (obviously) with CGI and computer effects, but stunning nonetheless.
-
Spoon Boy, since you've spent the last five years in Mommy's basement, I sincerly doubt you could have anything better to do.

id have to think long and hard for the best ive ever seen and even then i would forget something equally fitting as winning my vote. But the best one ive seen recently is the shot in the magdalene sisters where one of the catholics girls has just bean beaten up the nuns and you know you are about to see something pretty grusome and sure enough you get such a shot, but one is is incredibly beautiful and cool at the same time.
It cuts to an ECU of the girls eye, her eyelashes all goey and wet from the thick blood between them, she looks distraught, and in her pupil you can see the face of the nun that just assulted her, leaning in and giving her some more shit over what ever trivial thing she had done.
The fact it doesnt cut to the nuns but you simply see them in the reflection of the blood gunged eye i thought was amazing.
