I installed my JRSC this weekend and I am not terribly impressed. It doesn't act like what I have read. The boost reacts slowly like a turbo. When I goose it in neutral the vacuum barely jumps up to 15"Hg. When I get on it on the street it acts like a turbo with the boost gauge slowly climbing out of vacuum and into boost to about 7 PSI, but I don't get there vey fast. From the time I drop the hammer it takes about 2-3 seconds to reach full boost!
Here is the setup:
-'94 GSR w/ 95k on the odometer, runs great
-stock intake and exhaust
-Used JRSC @ 6 PSI (looked to be in great shape)
-Cartech w/ check valve but no restrictor.
I had a GS 342 but the idle FP was 50 and the static @ 60 so I elected to take it out and put the stocker back in temporarily which gives FPs of 42 vac and 52 static with the static setting on the cartech set at 50. I have played with the bleeder but it doesn't make too much of a difference.
Should the boost come on instantaneously? I have heard about guys seeing boost when goosing the throttle in neutral and I can't even get to 10"Hg. This doesn't seem right. I have heard about "Instant boost" and that's not what I am seeing.
Could it be that the belt isn't tight enough and the SC is not turning fast enough? There is absolutely no squealing and I am almost positive I have the belts on right although the SC belt was longer than the JR instructions mentioned and the tensioner is at it's limit. The belt seems very tight though.
Please offer any suggestions as I am pretty disheartened about the install.

Bill,
i'm not very mechanically inclined so I really don't know what you did wrong. Perhaps others can shed some light on this...but we have the same car/set up (for now at least). It's a 95 GSR w/ about the same milage as yours...boost came on very much instantly...if u want, you can test drive my car for comparision purposes since we virtually right next to each other..let me know...my car doesn't make that much power anymore (I think) since I was only hit 14's...it's either I have terrible tires/bad driving tech. or low compression...I need to do a compression check...I'm hoping it's the tire though http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Getting a dyno run is probably the quickest way to check out the integrity of the blower itself. I have a bone stock 95 GSR except for the blower and a JR BTC and my whp went from 138 to 195. If you're not running the Boost Timing Controller, this may account for some of the throttle sluggishness you are feeling tince that box is primarily designed to help with drivability issues (and it also helps with emissions).

Don't take this wrong cause I love the JRSC..I even own one.
But your expectations might be a little too high....or you really could have a problem or...
Are you letting it completely warm up before you hit it??? That will definitly make a difference in performance. Your engine will not switch over to the bigger cam lobes untill it's good and ready.
You probably know that already tho.
Just a thought,
Austin

They might be slightly overinflated, but it should not take that long at all to reach full boost. Not nearly that long.

Thanks for everyone's input. I talked to JRCivic and he also pointed out the possible belt slippage and to check for leaks and properation of the bypass valve. I changed the belts as the ones that came with the kit were strected the outer limits of the tensioners and the boost gauge still was really sluggish. Then it dawned on me that the gauge could be lying so I attached the vacuum source for it to the TB where I knew vacuum was working properly because I could see the actuating arm for the bypass working fine. The gauge still read little to no change when rapping the throttle in neutral. Then I pulled out some of the nylon hose that I pushed back into the firewall earlier in the install and.....you probably already guessed...
It was kinked! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Once straightening the kink the gauge reads exactly how everyone else says theirs does. It jumps quickly to the 3-5 PSI range and then back down when revving in neutral. So the supercharger works fine, which is good because I was starting to get a little worried. Realize that fixing the gauge makes no difference in performance, just perceived performance. It's amazing how much looking at the gauges can alter your perception. With the gauge fixed it actually feels faster!
Anyway, I think AMslp_late is right, I was just expecting too much. Sure it's faster but it isn't the tire smoking, neck snapping, cheek wrinkling power I was expecting. When I turbocharged my old Civic EX it FELT faster, but it couldn't have been. I bet the 'teg was as fast or faster when it was stock than my turbo Civic. The car runs well with little or no tip in @ 10 deg. and 2-4 green bars in the A/F gauge with 42/52/?? fuel pressures.
I realize that I can still do some fine tuning but I think the ENDYN stepper and RC 310's that came with the kit are coming out of the box a little earlier than I had hoped. I will be getting a B&M Commandflo from Jim in the very near future so I can do the TOO mod and lower my FP enough to run the 310's and install the stepper pully.
Random, I would really like to take rides in each other's cars to compare! Give me a call @ 713-303-3298 and we'll arrange a time and place to meet. I'm in the Pearland area.
I feel bad for wasting everyone's time, especially Jim, who took 15-20 minutes off from an SI JRSC install to help me troubleshoot my phantom "problem".
Thanks again for all the input. I'm sure I will have some more questions in the near future.

I toasted one of those hard vacuum lines too when I put my boost gauge in.
Put the stepper pulley on after everythings tested out. I know the time I stepped my car down from 10psi back to 6psi, 6psi felt pathetic!
There's plenty more power to be had.

i got pretty much instant boost when i had the charger on. I had my static FP set at 58 psi. And as you would imagine i was getting 98 at full boost. I also had an intake on the entire time I had the blower so i dont know if that would cause the difference you are experiencing.
You have your timing set at what? 10 degrees?
And as for the boost in neatral...I dont think it will always do that. I never had boost in neutral, it would only go to like 15" like yours, then all of the sudden one day it started boosting when I was double clutching and in neutral.
try it for a whirl around the block with the resonator removed from the intake, and also with the fitler removed form the intake and see if there i any difference. One quick trip shouldn't cause any problems. If there is a huge difference then I would suggest an intake.

Look at your bypass valve operation. It sounds like it is not closing quickly. Perhaps something is interfering with it. It has a relatively strong spring, but should move by hand easily.
Try this: Start the car and get under the hood. Open the throttle by hand (like a hard stab on the gas pedal). You can watch the bypass valve. It should snap shut very quickly.

So, you found 30 HP in that kinked boost gauge line eh ?!?
lol
I think you ought to put in the bigger fuel pump and leave the fuel pressures where they lie... you may see some increased performance above 6500 rpm with the extra gas.
BTW, no apology is necessary. I am always glad to help a guy in need. Call me anytime you need assistance.

Yeah,
After a while you do get used to it. And I do the exact same thing...go race something. I've destroyed many an ego while boosting my own in my car.
And like I said before test drives will show you just how fast your car is!

5ltreater,
Weeelllcoommmeeee to the darkside man!!
I know about being not overly impressed with the SC. I was soooooo hyped about it that when I first got it put in I was pissed that I didn't break my neck when I punched the gas. lol. But once you drive it for a while you learn HOW to drive it, you learn HOW to make the tires smoke thru 3rd gear...which I have done many times. Really it's all about expectations. After a month or so of driving your darkside car, go test drive a new RSX and THEN you will realize just how fast your car is!!!
I drove a new type R after I had my car SC for about 6 months and I thought that something was wrong with the car!! It felt that slow! Give it time.
Good to have you with us

Thanks Austin, it's good to finally be here. I really did have my expectations too high. I like the kit and the performance but I'm glad I got it used. Had I paid full price I might be miffed I went JRSC. I have never seen a turbo kit new or used for what I got my JRSC for so overall I'm happy. I hope to be happier when I put in the stepper pully and 310's. After that, there is no more, or so I would have my wife believe. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif I'd like to run stock timing so a BTC will be necessary eventually and I should look into an intake and exhaust.
I need to take it to the track. It just doesn't feel like a mid to low 14 second car which is theoretically what I could run. I hope that riding in Randomwalk's car is similar to mine to verrify that I'm getting all I can out of it.

Yes...putting all the money into your car means you will likely be keeping it for some time. If it keeps you from buying a new car it is probably saving you money. The RSX Type S is nice but after a test drive the thing felt like it was running on 2 cylinders compared to my car.
Its funny what people's expectations are when installing the blower. I could not believe the power especially in first and second gear. It was stupid! After a while you just get used to it and think it's not really all that fast. That is until you smoke a Mustang GT or something on the highway!!
