Got a friend with a 97 Civic EX with a SOHC VTEC motor.
What would you do to this motor to speed it up. Blower? Turbo? Or maybe swap it out.
It's a daily driver, not a drag race car. Maybe a motor swap first? How is this for a platform.
He's already got headers, and exhaust, and intake etc.

I think I'd try to find one of those CRV motors with some Crower cams. I've read on the Hybrid site that there's a guy who swapped out his VTEC motor for one and was impressed with the torque. He just missed the revability of the VTEC. The Crower cams should give you a little more top end, and it should be cheaper then a GSR motor, and have enough torque to keep any daily driver happy! I think with those cams he should be able to get a legit 145-155 to the wheels.

If he wants to go all out do a motor swap. If he wants to keep his engine and go FI he should find a way to lower the compression a bit. The D16Y8 is VERY detonation prone...at least with the SC anyway. I haven't heard anything about how our engines react to turbo's. Some guys who SC their D16Y8's swap to a D16A6 head. The A6 head seems to be the most favorable one for making power on the SOHC motors. More information can be obtained at http://www.theoldone.com Feel free to ask me any specific questions you might have.

A blower on a 97 Ex? Been there, done that. Swaps are cool but they are really expensive and they can be difficult to smog depending on where you live. I vote for turbo. Waveoff makes a good point about detonation. Although I have a feeling the problems associated is due to the supercharger/heat rise/JR fuel management. Compression is 9.6:1. That's a nice compromise for Fi.

Check out my sig. I have been running this setup for approx. 1 year and have had *minor*
problems only. Usually associated with me trying some jackass new way to make more power. The big thing with the SOHC VTEC is
proper fuel/timing management. I run 6psi on the street [w/ 93 octane gas] and 10psi at the strip [w/ 100 octane gas]. If I try to run 6psi on 87 or 10psi on 93, I get massive detonation [very audible] but otherwise it is fine. BTW, I run Ice Water through my IC at the track to get my charge temps below ambient. Peace.

my vote is to buy a new car http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

BLOWER!!!???!! NO WAY IN HELL! Do not run a D16 in a FI configuration. Total waste of money and time.
B18C1 & C5, B16A2/3, B18B and B20's are super easy weekend swaps.
If you don't want to spend lots of $, then a B18B is the way to go. $2000 for everything, can't beat it! Hell, a junk JRSC D16 setup will cost you over $2000, and you'll have more hp and torque, reliably with the B18B. Then some electronics and cams, you'll never be happier.
If you really want a JRSC, I'll sell mine for an offer.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Tom

Lund lets think it out a bit:
#1 - JRSC (new)
Cost: $2300(no other upgrades)
Performance: 15.7-16.2 note: 6g Sc Civics seem to run slower than 5g Civics
#2 - Greddy Turbo w/ intercooler(new)
Cost: $2200(no other upgrades)
Performance: 14.2 - 15.5 depending on boost
Note: Never seen a Greddy Turbo'd Civic run faster than 15.6 or so(street tires)
#3 - B18B1 w/ B16/GSR tranny
Cost: $2400-2600
Performance: 15.1 - 15.5
#4 - B18C or B18C5
Cost: $3500(good luck)- $5500
Performance: 14.0 - 14.7
Note: Seen a B18C5 5g hybrid run 13.9@100mph
I would recommend the B18B with B16/B18C tranny. Remember Jerome Soh's gutted 5g ran 13's all day with the above setup. Tell your friend happy hunt'n http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Big Kat, those numbers are for hatches, not Coupes like the EX. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
With the B18B he won't hit low 15's.
With B18C1 he will hit high 14's, low 15's
With B16 he will be looking at mid 15's.
I say build the stock motor and get a greddy turbo kit, and boost around 12psi. Pricewise you cant beat that in my opinion. 2000 for a built motor, and 1800 or so for the turbo,
You also have to take into consideration the install fees. A turbo is something that one can do on their own, only guys who have good experience can install a motor!
I think for the price or just over for a swap you can have a fully built stock motor running a decent amount of boost. The stock sohc motor doesnt have the potential of the bigger motors, but still, is cheaper.
Simply put, you would be faster than a B18C1 hybrid, with I/H/E, and done it cheaper!

Crom - Remember I said with a GSR/SI tranny. We have a 98 EX running 15.4 w/ full interior and I/H/E.........on Nitto 450's.
Now about the $2000 for a built D16.......where are you getting this done? The price-tag from Benson's was $3050 shipped(JE pistons, Crower rods, resleeved, balanced& blueprinted) If you going to get the motor built then scrap the cheap ass Greddy kit for the F-Max kit.
Remember he said it wasn't a drag car. His best bet would be the B18b w/ GSR tranny. Shit if he can pull ad reinstall the D16......then he can do a B-series motor swap. My bud Frank did his GSR hybrid over the weekend. He pulled the motor on Friday and had the B18C installed on Sat..........finished up the wiring on Sunday. That was his 1st conversion ever.

i have the f-max turbo. bro-in-law got the greddy. both of us are daily drivers. if youre not planning to do some serious drag racing...go with the greddy. we both run 5 psi (im not rich and premium fuel is expensive to waste) and i kill him on top end but his car just feels smoother - this is a subjective feeling and its hard to explain. fit and finish goes to greddy. complete kit goes to f-max - it includes intercooler, additional injector controller w/ 2 440cc injectors, btm...you wont have to purchase almost anything else except a built block to get some serious power with it. if i could do it again i would have gone with a greddy w/ intercooler.
bottom line.....be realistic with what you want - drivability or drag racer.
But many people who write to this board have the supercharger...
