I'm so pissed off and disappointed about many things right now, I'm not going to write a whole review. There are no spoilers here unless otherwise noted.
<u>I'll just say a few things.</u>
1. Thank you very ****ing much, Mr. Anderson.
2. When you say you're a huge Alien/Predator fan, don't bastardize the two creatures. (More on this later on)
3. Don't try to copy certain aspects of Alien and Aliens unless you're certain you can achieve them... Anderson failed miserably in this case.
4. I'm EXTREMELY glad I used the free movie ticket I got when I bought the Predator SE DVD. (At least something good came from today)
Some minor spoilers below.
<u>Some absolutely pathetic/laughable/cheesy/annoying aspects of AvP:</u>
1. Lex and the Scar Predator are seen running away SIDE BY SIDE in slow motion just before and during explosions. *shudders*
2. When you try to get a friendship between a human and a Predator going, unless it is done perfectly, it also fails miserably. (As in this case)
3. The Alien Queen went from the powerful, lumbering beast we saw in Aliens to a fucking agile acrobat that I couldn't find nearly as scary nor threatening as I did in Aliens.
4. I think the only lights available on the set during the filming of AvP were the flashlights the actors had. I couldn't make out shit during most of the film, especially the fight scenes.
Uggh... if I think of anymore, I'll post them.
EDIT: Oh! I did!
5. The accents on the actors were unnecessarily heavy. Almost to the point of provocation.
6. The Predators looked absolutely horrific without their masks. WAY too many teeth.
7. Certain violent scenes were somewhat surprising for a PG13 rating.
8. The Predators definitely did not look as convincing as they did in their earlier films. They definitely had a fake feeling with them.
This wasn't as bad on the Aliens.

See... this is exactly what I expected to hear.

I blame every fanboy out there for begging for this film to happen... no one to blame but yerselves.
My poor Aliens got tainted with Pred ickyness...

I guess you love it or you hate it. I thought it was great and was thoroughly impressed.
If you're one of those tight-asses who can't handle something different than your precious original movies, you're going to hate it.
However, if you're the kind of person who isn't looking for the exact same stuff shoved down your throat in a different context, you'll like it.

Oh, and see it for yourself. Don't let people who hated it sway your judgement before you can judge it for yourself.

What I find is that sequels/spin-offs focus too much on the creature(s) and expect it to carry the film... it's all about stupid formulas for quick cash and empty hype.
The fault doesn't lie completely with Hollywood though... fans have no idea what makes a good movie. They want to see more creature and less talk without realizing it's the elusiveness that draws them in and the character developement that holds them.
A prime example is Alien3... the best story of them all... the best shot... the best directed... the most hated by fans. My favourite.

Well, AvP certainly didn't rely on the creatures. I've heard people complain that it was too focused on the humans.
Suprisingly, the story really is good, and it definately doesn't rely on the creatures to carry it.
There isn't a whole lot of suspensful waiting for the creatures to show up, but I thought it was handled very well.

I had a bad feeling when I read the paper looking for a review yesterday. All I found was this: 'AvP was not available for a screening for critics' That's usually not a very good sign.

I got a call this morning from a bud in Vancouver.
he loved it, and we have pretty similar tastes in movies.
I'll see it, when I get around to it.

Nope, just in general to people who hate anything that isn't exactly like something they've already seen.

I still have to see it, and I'll judge it my own.
I've now heard both "Loved it!!" or "Hated it!!" reviews from people I know who've seen it.

However, there were some scenes that I enjoyed.
And when I spend the $5.55 on the DVD at Wal-Mart, I'll strictly skip to them.
*minor spoilers*
The scene where Celtic and the other Predators kill the men at the top and send Quinn sliding down the shaft, and then kill him at the bottom. I found that satisfying, and was more violent that I expected with a PG13 rating.
The scenes involving the Predator ship were alright.
The scene at the end with the Elder Predator was also alright, but the horrible faces on the Predators took away from it some.

And just a couple others.
Overall, I think about 30 minutes total of the film was well worth it.
I should've said this before, but one of the biggest problems this film had was extremely poor lighting (which worked in earlier films, but failed here) and incoherent and confusing editing.

It's weird that people thought it was too dark. I almost always think movies are too dark, but I didn't think that at all about AvP. Perhaps your theatre's equipment just wasn't as good?

You know, at first that's what I thought.
But then I thought that the filmmakers decided to make it dark a la Alien and Aliens... you know, to try to make the film like those two in terms of atmosphere.
But obviously/in my opinion, it didn't work.
But the good thing about the DVD is that you can increase the brightness, and I feel that will help a lot.

The worst part was the Predator and Sigourney weaver wannabe running side by side. It's not a matter of characters and loyalty to existing films, its just shitty film making.
And to me, the Predators really looked like big guys in costumes much more than the aliens. (I know the Aliens were primarily cgi... maybe that made the Preds stick out more)

Sanaa Lathan is incredible attractive, but this was just a bad movie for her to be in.

And, oh, God... the dialogue.
"What did you say this room was called?"
"Sacrifical chamber."
"This is beginning to make sense!"
And the damn Italian guy explaining EVERY little thing in detail...
And they couldn't have picked a worse time or method to put the flashback scene in.
