I keep all my dolls in undies. It bother me that the Gotz dolls that have slacks for their meet outfit don't have undies. I always give them undies. It bothers me that Felicity does not have panties. I will have the same problem when I get Kaya!

I think the historical undies are too cute to pass up. But some dolls have them on all the time and some don't, though I have undies for all my dolls. Felicity and Addy wear theirs all the time since it helps give their dresses the correct fit, but Addy doesn't wear her chemise. I don't like the bulk of the chemises under Addy's and Kirsten's dresses. Kirsten doesn't wear hers much, sometimes the petticoat. Josefina sometimes wears the petticoat. Sam never wears hers unless I want to see her in them.

Addy and Kirsten need theirs to keep warm! Felicity doesn't usually wear her complete set. It takes too much time to put them all on and take them off again and she doesn't like to feel uncomfortable. Addy can't sit with her crinoline on though.

If you think *very carefully* of the privies used at the time, you wouldn't want to try to get a pair of undies down whilst keeping your skirt, shift, pocket and panniers out of the way...
It isn't as immodest as it seems.

Samantha wears her lacy whites almost all the time. I like the little bit of fullness it gives her skirts. I love her little garters and the pretty pink ribbons under there. Josefina wears her petticoat sometimes, mostly in the winter when she needs some extra warmth. Although on several dresses I like for the edge of the petticoat to peak out from under the skirt. I think it looks pretty regardless of whether she would have worn it like that or not.
I have Kirsten's underwear. They are a nice addition to her dresses. They make her dress puff out nicely too. I quite like them.
Ok, I have always had this question and this seems to be a fairly appropriate place and time to ask. I will endeavor to be discrete. If colonial ladies did not wear panties, what did they do during their "time of the month?"
Moderators, if this is not friendly, please feel free to delete at will.
btw, my today girls all wear undies, and Kirsten wears at least her petticoat if not chemise all the time.

Abby - that's a good question, and now I am curious too . . . I seem to remember that at some point in history (maybe Victorian times?), it would have been typical for a woman to stay at home and in bed during this time. That wouldn't be too practical if you didn't have a maid though!
I also think it would have been tough to be nursing a baby in a lot of historical clothing styles, especially during Victorian times.

I know that in ancient civilizations women wore belt like devices lined with plant fibers (cotton or cattail fuzz) or wool and then replaced the fibers throughout the day. As for nursing. Last time I was in Williamsburg they had a museum exhibit devoted entirely to "Fashions of motherhood". At least for the colonial times many of the nursing mothers had dresses that had a slit under the stomacher (so the dress could be worn normally after the baby was grown). The open part was covered by the stomacher. when the woman needed to nurse she could take off the stomacher and guide the baby through the slits so he/she can nurse. It was a very interesting exhibit actually. It had all the history of trying to look as "not pregnant" as possible (such as lifting up the hoops of an underskirt to make it more full) or wearing empire type styles that were very open and flowing over the waist.
southern_belle,
Thanks for the information. If I ever get to Williamsburg, I will try to see it that exhibit is still around. It sounds like it would be very interesting!

I'm so in love with Addy's undergarments, that I'm considering a second set! The hoop skirt (crinoline) is AMAZING! In addition to being a part of history, it gives dresses an INCREDIBLE full look.
Felicity's add a lot, too! Besides she needs her pocket, or there's no use for the slits in her dresses!
I have Felicity's undergarments, and I like them. They seem to have the nice purpose of making her gowns poof out. I have always admired Kirsten's and Samantha's undergarments, but I am wondering what these are used for? Do the dolls wear them under their clothes? Is this an item that is going to just go unused even though they are cute?
My sam and kirsten have their undergarments on. I like them from a historical standpoint and they serve no practical purpose for the fashions. I love history and love that my dolls have complete historical outfits.
When my daughter complains that her undies give her a wedgie I like to show her samantha's garters. That quiets her down a bit.
I like them for the historical purpose. But agree that they are not necessary for play. I also think they should be included with the doll.
Abby ~ to answer your question ~
Did you read Minuk's book? It is similar to the situation with her friend when she "becomes a woman". They had to stay inside, away from everyone during that time! They just sat all day! Can you imagine the pain? And nothing to do but just sit there and wait it out And of course everyone would probably know then too, but it's not like they would ever say anything.
My sister broached the delicate subject of womanhood with a costumed interpreter at Plimoth Plantation living history museum and the lady said that they have a garnment sort of like a baby's diaper they wear.
As for nursing mothers, I have seen patterns for dresses where the front part of the top buttons open and comes down when necessary.
