OK, in the last 2 weeks i've seen (in the theatre) Eurotrip, Club Dread, 50 First Dates and The Passion Of Christ. I'm not going to go in depth on any of these films as obviously I spend way too much time in dark theatres. [img]wink.gif[/img] hehe
The Passion gets 2 thumbs up as a very powerful and moving movie. All existing copies of Eurotrip and Club Dread should be completely destroyed and they are blights on the movie going landscape. [img]smile.gif[/img] And 50 First Dates was a so-so kind of movie, I much preferred The Wedding Singer when it comes to Barrymore/Sandler movies.
We won't even go into how many other movies i've seen (rentals) besides these four. I really need to get a life. Any suggestions RocketMaster??? [img]smile.gif[/img]

I will admit that I am interested in seeing 50 First Dates when it makes it's way to cable. There must be some cute bits in it. I mean, Drew Barrymore is a Goddess!! I just finished watching Adam Sandler's inane cartoon on HBO mere minutes ago. And I think, Why? Why why why? But, ya gotta like him. He's so goofy and so... well, normal.

Other than "Passion", I wouldn't see the others for free. I try to reserve my infrequent big screen visits to watch films that are truly made to benefit from the big screen. I'd like to see Last Samurai in theatre before it goes away.

Kevin recommended "In America", and I have an interest in it due to that beautiful quirky girl that was also in "Minority Report" (which I LOVED!), but the story as portrayed in previews and clips reminds me so much of "Angela's Ashes" that I am veering away until I hear otherwise. I despised that movie with fervor.

I saw "Lost in Translation" last weekend. Fascinating how different everyone's responses to it seem to be. It's like everyone thinks it's 'about' something different, and get's a different impression of the end. Is it over-rated? I think so, but I liked it and can relate to in the same way that YOU can, Foz. It's very similar to our convention experiences.

Did you get my message about "S-5"? And, ...looks like the RCR bunch out here will be going to the "Hellboy" premiere! Coolness! So much happened today I can't sleep. I have 6 hours before I have to be phone savvy again.

There's not really much I'd like to spend $7/ticket to see on the big screen currently.

Suprisingly, haven't even seen Return Of The King yet! Here's the reason: LOVED Fellowship in the theatre, but then bought the extended-edition DVD before going to the theatre to see Two Towers. Without all the extra material on the DVD, Two Towers felt like an abridged version of the movie! I felt cheated by the theatrical version! Granted, it was still 3-hours long in the theatre, but felt too short for the story being told. Now that I have the extended-edition DVD of Two Towers, the story feels fleshed-out to its proper scope. So, skipping ROTK until the extended-edition DVD is released in November, which is reported to be at LEAST a full hour longer than the theatrical release, and includes characters totally cut-out of the movie (like Christopher Lee's Sarumon character makes an appearance). Also heard mild complaints about ROTK having some clumsy editing in the 5-or so "endings" before the credits finally roll.

'HellBoy' is one I wouldn't mind seeing, 'Passion Of The Christ' is another one I'll have to see (Last subtitled movie seen in a theatre was 'Gates of Heaven' (title?), sloppily remade years later as 'City of Angels').

Actually Reved the Rings movies NEED to be seen on the big screen to really appreciate them, even though they aren't the extended versions. [img]wink.gif[/img]

And to waste a further $6.50 on friday I saw Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen. Let the flaming begin. hehe This was a really bad week for new releases.

I'm looking forward to Hellboy, but I won't get too excited as i'm usually disappointed in comic adaptations, but here's hoping that Batman Begins turns out alright.

I enjoyed Lost In Translation and yes Rocketmaster it was very reminisecent of our convention experiences. [img]smile.gif[/img] I'm gonna have to wait to see In America as I don't believe it is playing in my area anymore.

I'll settle for my cousins house for the widescreen experience (54-inch plasma screen, surround-sound audio, beer, and a pause-button when needing a piss/cigarette break!)

$6.50-$7.00 a ticket?! You guys are SPOILT! A movie ticket in Hollyweird is $10, and I have heard that the new Arclight Cinema is charging $14!!!!! Luckily I have a student I.D., so I can go to the Burbank Multiplex for $8.50, plus it's the only place in town with free parking!

LOTR: Return of the King was the only one I saw in the theater. It was miraculous. If I had had the time, I would have paid to see it again. I have both versions of the other two films on DVD. The 2 vol sets, and the 4 vol sets of each. Yes, the 4 v sets are totally incredible, but there's so much stuff on the 2-ers also that isn't repeated on the other, I don't want to give those up either. I will probably buy both of the last movie as well. I'm such a sucker, but I enjoyed them that much.

About screen goddesses...I know a little about your taste Foz, but nothing about Reved's...here's my list of faves. List yours too everyone!

...Ignore what I said above about wanting to see Hellboy in the theatre. Just saw a new trailer for it & can't believe how "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" it looks (and I hated that movie!)

And know it'll disappoint, but will probably give the remake of Dawn Of The Dead a try.

Joy. Another hint 'Dawn Of The Dead' is going to disappoint: Remember right before 'Independence Day' was opening, a short 30-minute program was released on TV? That programs intro played exactly like 'War of the Worlds' in the television-age. It also tried to portray 'Independence Day' as a serious alien-invasion movie.

Well, few days ago noticed quick commercials that USA Network is planning to play the first 10-minutes of Dawn Of The Dead , uncut, on Monday evening, right before playing Final Destination. This sounds like the exact same type of hype-manufacturing seen 5-years ago ID-4 used in their lacklustre SFX-heavy WOTW-ripoff.

I'm expecting to totally despise this remake of DAWN....

Hey reved, they are playing that 10 minutes of the Dawn Of The Dead remake at the end of Final Destination, not the beginning. I'll tape it just because i'm curious. And on that note, ignore Secret Window. I was bored silly and was ready to walk out except that I had already wasted an hour of my life. Surprised I didn't fall asleep.

The Hellboy previews I saw looked like it stole the current "Marvel formula". Very X-Men-ish, with a storyline that looks like the plot of the TV series Angel.

Did anyone watch that Dawn of the Dead preview? I was working and missed it. And by the way, I love ID-4. I die laughing every time I see the bit with Brent Spiner. He did that unsocialized nerd thing so perfectly...must have modeled it on people he met at Trek conventions!

Barely matters though, as it only comes out in 3 days.

You HATED Daredevil! Why would you buy it then?

Well, I should talk....I bought HULK on DVD even though the previews looked like garbage. Usually I am fanatic about going through each and every tidbit on the DVDs, but with Hulk, I barely got through one viewing of the movie, never mind the extras. Couldn't stand it...even with the beautiful Jennifer Connelly...hey wait, I forgot to put Jennifer Connelly on my list!!! [img]graemlins/whatever.gif[/img]

Anyway, anyone want to trade my HULK 2 Disk Special Edition DVD for a DVD of something like, say...League of Extraordinary Gents ...or... Independence Day...or....????

Talked to a guy last night at the KWOON signing who saw a preview of HELLBOY. He said it was fantastic. Very faithful to the book.."if you like the book you'll like the movie". Also said the character design was awesome and the only drawback was that 'the bad guys were not very well-defined characters, but neither are they in the book.'

Yes, I did hate Daredevil, but it's a "special edition director's cut". [img]smile.gif[/img] hehe

OK, I took Fozzy's advice & watched ROTK on the big screen. Worth the price of a ticket, but even at three & 1/2 hours, still noticed many places which needed to be extended. I'll just wait till November before seeing it again...

OH, and just to cheese-off Rocky. The big megaplex theatre I visit happens to be (stupidly) located directly across the street from ANOTHER megaplex theatre! So their prices are quite reasonable. Before 5:00pm, their matinee showings, tickets are only $5.75. $10? Sucker!! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Went to see Jersey Girl this past weekend. I have to say that I was expecting a better movie than what I saw and why do people keep hiring Ben Affleck for films??? The man has no screen presence what so ever and I won't even go into his "acting".
Would've been better off going to see Scooby Doo 2.

OK, this weeks excursions were The Girl Next Door and Ella Enchanted. Strangelly enough Ella was the better of the 2 films, although Minnie didn't have enough screen time for my taste. [img]wink.gif[/img] TGND was a Risky Business wanna be and was sadly lacking in any charm. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Just finished watching the Rankin/Bass 1979 animated/musical version of RETURN OF THE KING. Granted, it's a super abreviated version of the story, clocking-in at only 1:39 (closer to 1:27 minus the musical sequences), but Rankin/Bass did a great job with the final book!

It was so much more accurate than the horrible Bakshi rotoscope-animated version, which seemed to switch immediately from somewhere in the middle of Fellowship suddenly to the battle of Helm's Deep, then credits unexpectedly rolled!! Still, Rankin/Bass did an admirable job with The Hobbit, and this version of ROTK (to finally finish the story Ralph Bakshi just seemed to lose interest in before dropping). Hehe, I'd like to compare this version to Jackson's version when released on DVD! Many of the scenes were almost identical between them, although in animation there'd need to be some over-emoting.

I loved those Rankin/Bass animated Rings flix when I was a tot. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Think i'll go see 13 Going On 30 today. Don't think there is anything else in the theatres that I really want to see and of course looking at Jennifer Garner is always good. [img]wink.gif[/img] hehe

Think I'll go out for KILL BILL v.2 this afternoon. Saw v.1 last week, so might as well finish the story today.

EDIT - Just back. With the amount of Gargantuan-length features being released, and QT's penchance in this two-part movie in particular for 70's western & Kung-Fu drive-in nostalgia, believe this movie would have 'worked' much better released complete. Volume 1 followed directly by Volume 2, with perhaps a 10-minute "intermission" separating the two for viewers to stretch their legs. Hell, Kubrik did it in '2001; A Space Odyssey'. It would have also made the photo-end-credits seem less of a 6-month ago throwback. But Miramax likely felt it better selling two tickets serializing the movie than releasing it as a mega-package.

As I feared, Kill Bill v.2 fared about as equally against v.1 as Reloaded or Revolutions fared against The MATRIX. The bloodiest action-fight sequences were in v.1, so when v.2 came out, viewers would be expecting a finale to top it. It doesn't. O'course, most of the loose-ends were tied up in this volume, but that required perhaps a few too many motionless 'talking-head' discussions, and a flashback to her 'cruel tutelage' by Mei Shei (or whatever his name was) should have occured somewhere in v.1, perhaps because that scene in v.2 prepared me for some very abbreviated fight-sequences here in v.2.

Abbreviated fight sequences = Beatrix (Uma, whose characters name is bleeped-out of speech until about halfway through v.2) fighting Daryll Hannah.

Sorry to change the subject, but whew! Did either of you check out the "reviews" for Edgeplay posted around? Take a look either on the Runaways or Cherie's board. There was a screening the other night so the sh*tstorm is beginning. It will be interesting to see if any of VB's brainless minions post an honest review or just more of their usual nauseating devotionals.

Read the "reviews"... yea, a lotta vague praise which described nothing about the movie. EXCEPT for the only 2 posts "L.A. Bill" has made here on Hostboard. His review was much more detailed about why & how the movie didn't work for him, but seems he was perhaps biased against enjoying anything about the documentary. NewYorkJettster didn't seem too keen on the movie either & she apparently hasn't even seen it yet!

BTW - who's VB? I skimmed the reviews, you mean Vicki?

AH, how open-minded of him; a mod over at The Runaways board claims he'll delete all Edgeplay threads if people write criticisms/negative reviews of the movie. [img]graemlins/shhh.gif[/img]

I am so glad you posted what you did, reved! I wanted to say that very same thing, but for a long boring list of reasons, I need to stay out of it. Yes, VB is Vicki Blue. Bill's is the only review that says ANYTHING! You can't even tell if any of the others actually saw the movie! It's pretty funny, that after all these years of buildup about it, the fans don't really seem to care. LOL! I suspect that several of the defenders are the filmmakers or plants, posting repeatedly under all these brand new screen names.

You get a chance to see EdgePlay, Rocky? I'd be interested in reading an unbiased review (even attending the premiere, your review of Hellboy was rather down-to-earth; not all fanboy praise & single-line movie-poster accolades). It's less probable here on McCarthy's board that a not-so-affectionate review would cause the uproar it did on Runaways board. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

No! None of us have seen it! That's the whole thing! VB made a documentary about the band then refused to show it to them! She even at one point said that if anyone from our bunch showed up, she'd have us arrested!!! Sheer idiocy. Plus, there's no way anyone from the band or label would go, because they don't support it and don't want to give the impression that they do. The funny thing is that even the people who claim to support it didn't show up. Anyway, we may get a copy soon, and when I do see it I'll let ya know what I thought.

Is there more info on release dates from IMDb-Pro? Standard IMDb only mentions two film-fest releases, then an unnamed Sept. 16, 2004 date (for limited theatrical showing, or direct-to-dvd?)

Hehee, could try finding the person who manufactures cheap bootleg DVD's around here (where I saw Hellboy) an' see if could interest him in running-off a few thousand extra copies of Edgeplay. [img]eek.gif[/img] Maybe it'll make a dent in VB's financial-backers opinion of VB if 'someone' tosses a $7 bootleg against their $25.99 storefront rentals.

Well, hehee, Edgeplay doesn't seem to be getting any commentary since the first weekend. Lets go back to theatrical releases, rather than film-fests. Below is a repeat of my review of KILL BILL v.2, but with the spoilers removed (turns out, having several spoilers in the same post mucked-up Java).

Thought about it some more, and hope this one movie doesn't destroy his entire literary universe by showing robots as sneaky clever killers.
Asimov's robots can't be bastardized THAT much! The robots have to have been set-up by human(s) to be fall-'guys'. It's a plot by the anti-automoton faction!
