Hey all, just found out my position is being eliminated at work - on my birthday of all days.
WOO FUCKING HOO!!!
What a wonderful day. 30 more days, and if i "voluntraily resign" I get 30 days severance. Which also means NO UNEMPLOYMENT. If I don't resign, no severance. That's BULLSHIT. I need to talk to a lawyer...
Anyhow, that's my great fucking day... sorry, had to vent...

To make the best of it....
... work the 30 days (while looking for another job), and take the severance (which is probably more than what Unemployment would pay.)
Just tell the new place that you can start work on April 19th or such... and you'll get a full month of bonus pay!
When my office was eliminated at one job, I took the severance option, worked until they were done with the shut down, started my new job the following week, and took my severance and took my wife and kids to disney. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Is that if you volumtarily resign now, you get 30days pay, or if you work 30 days and then resign, you get 30days pay?
just curious. If your job is being elilminated, they can't deny you the form that says you were let go for lack of work.
It is something that you should have looked into.

sorry to hear that dude. same thing happened to me a little over a year ago. cruising along, managing kb toys, then bam! they close my store and lay me off. best thing that could have happened to me though.

Yeah, I have to work out the 30 days, then resign to get the severance. Then I get 30 days pay for severance. If I leave early or don't sign the form, no severance.
I hope I can find a new job before the 30 days is up, then I can take the severance and get a bonus of sorts! Job market sucks here though. Damn computer jobs!
I have 21 days to decide whether or not I accept that offer though.

Thanks again all. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about this.
Being in the IT industry, you'd think I'd be used to it... this is now the third time this has happened to me. Our company just merged with two others, and my whole department was eliminated.
I'm going to start looking for a new job right away, and hopefully all should pan out. I broke the news to my wife tonight, and she took it how I thought... but we know we'll get through it. Life has a way of working itself out.
In the meantime, looks like toy buying will have to taper off for a bit. I'll just customize what I got, and hopefully catch up when I can.
I would seriously like to do a career move and do something new. I was serious about the toy thing, but I don't have the entrepreneurial (sp?) knowledge to actually do it. Maybe I can just make some customs and sell them on ebay in the meantime for extra cash or something...
But bills are bills, and since I just bought a house last september and have a family to take care of, I'll probably end up working for "the man" again somewhere else... [img]smile.gif[/img]
And thanks for all the birthday wishes guys! It was pretty good, at least I tried to make the best of it. Got some Dremel goodies (the Dremel Drill Press, the flex hand tool and stand) and a kick ass West Coast Choppers shirt from the wife, and she made my favorite dinner and baked my favorite cake (chocolate chocolate chip bundt cake) - so that was cool!
