I just received this very cool book today...it's huge! I went right to the section on monitors and I found out that 95% of all Beatles music was recorded and mixed using the Altec 605A duplex in 612 cabinets ...fascinating!!!

I have always known that certain groups of the 60,s and 70,s just sounded really right through Altec, and ONLY Altec.
Beach Boys recordings also come through the way I think they were intended to, using Altecs.

And Doo-*** , that's great through Altecs.
Jeez, the term for a certain form of early rock and roll noted for it's streetcorner vocal harmonies has been censored by the site program.

I didn't say anything about Italians, I was talking about Rock and Roll music.
In any event that "without papers" thing is an urban myth.

I think we will all agree, if you cant be there in person, sitting in front of a pair of Altecs is the next best thing. I always remove the front cover before listening. I don't want anything between me and my speakers except air. By the way, in the early 70's I couldn't get enough Eagles. Listening to my Valencias (846B's) was and still is a passion. Anyway, I know a professional reconer in NJ who claims to have a pair of 605s in the original cabs that were in AbbyRoad studios for 30 years.
The Beatles recordings have been remastered for a second time. The official release date is September 9th 2009. It is said that this time they used some original equipment.
Was the old CD recordings a reproduction of what the LP dynamic range was 50 DB or are they using the full dynamic range of the CD at 93 DB. The Analogue tape decks have a Dynamic range of 80 DB 95 DB with Dolby. Will they use compression up to 93 DB or use full dynamic range from 0 to 80 DB.
I've seen the the original Hard days night film in a theater. The songs were remastered for theater in those days . The dynamic range was incredible.
Will have to wait and see .

I own the CDs from the 80's and don't think much of the SQ. But they don't sound much worse than the old US LP pressings, at least the ones I've heard. Sure hope they do a real remaster this time, not just a "rehash."
Very interesting to hear that the cinema master was better. Kinda makes sense.
I read the comments from the link you provided. There are varying opinions on the earlier vinyl masters. Most of the comments agree that the final product was aimed at AM radio rather than a fine HiFi system. SO, does this mean my original vinyl LP's are not the quality of todays CD's? My Turntable is in the shop so I can't go and check this out for myself, and besides I trust the opinions here on the forum.
Well it may depend on the LP and were it was pressed.
I've only ever once compared a Beatle LP to CD. They were a bit diffierent, but not night and day. (White Album, IIRC).
But who knows if there wasn't a better master/pressing done sometime & somewhere else?
That's the mystery and the fun.
My hope is that the remaster does NOT use the old masters as a strict guide. I would love to hear "better." That does not mean compressed and pumped up like so much of today's stuff. But it will probably be that way.....
I sure enjoy Paul's remastered/de-Spectorized Let It Be... Naked. It did take me awhile to "let go" of the old familiar sound and accept the new though. I expect it will be that way with subsequent re-masters too.
Seems us hoomin' beans have a preference for "first experiences". Steven Colbert nailed that quirk awhile back with;
