You can eat cicadas raw right off the bush or ground. I can't wait! When they are out full force I don't pack a lunch for that whole week. I just walk over to fountain square and eat for free.
Hey trav - Helmets are for SANE people.
Well, they make a neat crunching noise when you squish 'em or squash 'em or crush 'em or stomp 'em or scrunch 'em...
But, they are harmless to humans other than being a complete annoyance. Looks like they expect the bulk of the cicadas to be west of I-71 during their 4 to 6 week visit to the Greater Cincinnat Area.

While it seems like yesterday, we had a cicada invasion the year I graduated college. 17 years ago We had another cicada event in 1991 but it wasn't as pronounced. I think they are really cute bugs, can't imagine why some people go out of their way to step on them when they don't hurt anything and have so little time to live as it is.
Here's another one...
They are just pests and really serve no purpose whatsoever. But they dont last very long and we wont have to mess with a large group of them again for a while.

"They are just pests and really serve no purpose whatsoever." We are talking about an insect, not Muslims.
But seriously, every living creature serves a purpose, even if it does not directly benefit us. Birds, frogs and other small animals really have a feast when the cicadas come out as it boosts their protein intake significantly.
You have to wonder what will happen with some of the summer events schedules to take place during Cicada time. I'm sure they wont cancel any of the major ones, but I wonder if they'll make any changes in location or maybe even go indoors.

These thing are what, 100x the size of a love bug? Shit...death to all bugs.
Any of the parks that offer outdoor ceremonies for weddings are making people sign a waiver stating that they are aware of the cicada "issue" and hold the park harmless. i'm not sure why, but I find that highly amusing.
Ken wants to buy a muzzle for the dog, cause the thought of the dog eating cicada until he pukes doesn't sit well with Ken.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Um...because you won't be able to take a step WITHOUT stepping on them?Quote:

Helmets are for sissy boys.

Driving a convertible with the top up, or swimming with your clothes on. What's the point?
Actually there are as many rider accidents caused by helmets as deaths because of no helmets. It's just that the liberal nannies always know what's good for you.
I ride without a helmet and I swim in the ocean with sharks. I just don't jump out of airplanes. Now that's not sane.
I disagree with you (gae) wholeheartedly on this one. I HAD a cousin who rode without a helmet and he was killed when he was 37 years old, through no fault of his, but because of being hit by a car while on I74. With a helmet he MAY not have been killed. A helmet could have saved his life. I hope nothing ever happens to you!
She'll just get knocked silly be the cicada invasion.

I had a friend who died at 29. This was in Florida when helmwts were required by law. He was riding about 40 mph when a van pulled out in front of him. He hit the van and was thrown over the top. The back of his helmet caught on the van's door handel and snaped his neck. If he had not worn a helmet he would not have died.
It's also very possiable that if he had not worn the helmet he would have seen the van sooner and avoided the accedent altogether.
Helmets are restrictive, inhibit vision and hearing making riding more dangerous.
Riding is dangerous, but so is slipping in the shower.
I am not allowed to have a motorcyle. [img]graemlins/broken_heart.gif[/img]
I hate bugs....hopefully I'll make it through the cicada season. My intelleigent Hubby schedule a soccer tournament for Memorial Day weekend. I'm hoping they will not be prominent at the fields. The nights I play sofball, I'll at least be armed with my bat.
On the subject of helmets. I would have to wear a helmet, and who wants to have helmet hair, so I don't ride motorcycles.
Well, you can kinda make a sport out of it.
Say, Cicada Tennis, or squash. Simply take your racket and whack them right out of the sky and squish them when they hit the ground. Give yourself a point for every one you squash. LOL!
