Hi Guys, I've just saw the Dave Weckl Band tonight here in Rome and it was a special and great night with Dave and the whole band in a real super shape. I love seeing weckl and his band. Seen them 2 or 3 times at ronnie scotts. What stands out is his utter confidence and the 'this is how it is, listen and enjoy' thing that oozes from him. You can actually see it in the way he focuses, puts his in-ear phones in, counts off and bang, they're away, no messin!
One time I saw him, it was the second night he played there, some mic stands were not cleared away from the support band. I think it was mic stands, something like that. Weckl over the microphone said something to the effect of "and those stands are still there, can we clear them please". Presumably this had happened the night before, so he was a little pissed off. Well you know, someone said to me that they thought it was a bit much of him to say that, and I said no, weckl has worked damn hard to be able to play the way he does, he's a perfectionist and I think he deserves to be reciprocated.
Thanks for the review! I Can't wait to see him in Copenhagen! Too bad he threw out Gambale in the mid-90's - would have been a killer group with him on guitar.
I'm seeing Dave tonight, in Gualdo Tadino...!! Maybe I'll write a review on my website...

When asked at a recent clinic Weckl said he'd love to play all over the south and midwest, places he never gets out to but there's not enough of an audience to make such stops economically feasible. "The only places I can make a living is the east and west coasts, Europe, Australia and Japan."

OMG, I have no words for what I?ve seen/heard yesterday at the DWB-gig. Dave was absolutely amazing ! As Fuse said, Weckl must be from Mars (beyond all doubt) ...

Only groups such as Metheny's, Chick's, & Sanborn's seem to be able to do it, Sanborn being the closest thing to "smooth jazz," altho live it's at a very strong level, & very enjoyable, unlike a lot of the sell-out SJ clones [NTM because he was also born in FL!]. We need to beef up the music programs in the schools, if it still even exists, per se. Not meaning to 'ruin the mood / rain on the parade [img]graemlins/rain.gif[/img] ,' or sound cosmic, or like Nostradamus or the doom-n-gloom forecast guy [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img] , but some great philosophers of the past & present have remarked that one of the first signs of doomed societies in past history is the bastardization, ignoring, neglect, & ruination of the arts, & music as music in particular.
