Sorry guys - I'm still all giddy about the success of my first torrent download - the White Kit Clinics. I started to review this footage last night on my PC, realising that I'd already got a bit of the first one as part of Dr Funkenstein's Vinnie compilation DVD that my son got me as a gift, but I had to pause, rewind and review the part where Vinnie gets up from behind the kit to speak......those tracksuit bottoms!!!! what's all that about? I really appreciate that your wardrobe should have no bearing whatsoever on what your hands, feet and brain are doing on the kit - but,....there obviously wasn't a mirror in the dressing room....and I realise this might seem a trivial thing to notice amongst the drumming and verbal brilliance on this footage...and I won't even start on the mini-spare tyre protruding over his waistband!!! It's a little-known & very-top-secret fact that those track pants are what makes VC play the way he does!

You see, it all started a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

...VC was visited by a spirit super-being from the cosmos [after they dropped off Shirley MacLaine - BORRRring], who turned out to be a super-duper-rhythm ace "alien" [who has also visited Virgil & Weckl since], who gave Vince the bottoms, but VC has little recollection of it! So you see, the pants are responsible! [He'll mess ya up with the ninja-sticks if ya try to take 'em]...

VC keeps the "rhythmic energizer pack" stored on his waistline...

The incident was so mesmerizing & transforming that, everytime he unleashes his full-tilt rhythmic assault, he looses some of that bulk [since]...

Evidently, unlike most mere mortals, the "alien" is far too advanced to be concerned about something as trivial as "fashion-sense"...

I jest...

OK, so he WAS visited by someOne...but we'll just leave it at that...

It's rather shocking , I aggree. What's funny is the cameraman is obviouslt taken aback as well as the camera pans down to check the pants! Good stuff....

lol, I remember seeing Zildjian Day in NY for the first time and thinking, wtf is with the glasses and 'stache..and that cheezy keyboard backing track?? minor faux pas I guess.

That's funny, 'cause I recall being totally blown away by his performance with Tim Landers. But then again, I saw it shortly after it happened, perhaps you saw it more recently. Times change and so different things go in and out of fashion. I don't see the point in criticizing the past. In it's time, it was incredible, and to me, it is still highly relevant.

Is this a drumming board or a fashion board?

I didn't say I wasn't blown away...in fact, the pj thing is kinda cool as it is the anti-thesis of pseudo jazz chic. [img]rolleyes.gif[/img]

Speaking of bad fusion fashion, the worst I've seen is on a CCEB DVD boot, Music on the Mountain. Gambale is wearing (what appears to be at first glance), a long draping gown (with high top sneakers). Pattitucci dons a one piece pastel body suit, that looks like something from a mental patient ward.

Have any of you seen the Yamaha ad with Vinnie in a pink one-piece mechanics get-up? I had to buy the poster off eBay for $20 because it was so hideous! It was the 80's!!!

Let's not forget that Tony Williams had his signature one piece satin number that he always wore, and Keith Moon's one piece jump suit too.

Yeah i'm not into fashion too. These guy know WHO they are, they don't need to radiate it through the way they dress. Their identity is Drums and Music and that shouldn't be dictated by some sort of fashion of the time their playing represents.

LOL...yep, that was indeed typical whacky 80s, for sure.

In another 10, the fashion now is going to be "outdated"...then, in 20, it'll be retro - cool again! [Well, maybe NOT a lot of the 80s!]

Look around & see all the youngsters now wearing perilously close to 70s fashion today! [including all the !@#& facial hair, sideburns, muttonchops, fros! You'da been laughed out of the 80s with that sh**!]

Many fall victim to this inevitable pit...altho there are going to be times when one needs to be smarter & spruce up a bit...[if'n ya can't fight it, join it / when in Rome...] But generally, & with only a few obv exceptions, fashion is basically a result of affluenza, AWA pretense & superficiality. Nothing to do with spirit, depth, & truth.

[in my best Brain Animaniac or Peter Lorre:] it's all a gimmick/conspiracy by fashion designers to generate the dinero - & the weak-willed lemmings who follow it! [img]tongue.gif[/img] Jes' tellin' it lak it tizz - kippin' it rill. Wee-haww.

Looking back, how many different "looks" I had to adhere to [& believe me, like the good little chameleon, I did it up RIGHT!], it all seems a little bit silly...

As someone who played a lot in top 40, rock, metal, crossover country, AWA corporate & wedding scenarios [tux; suits] over the yrs in the 80s to present, I am allowed to talk that trash. W00t.

Whilst it takes nothing away from the musicians themselves (hey, everyone dressed like that in the good 'ole days...) the gear I find most cringing is that sported by the band in the Live At The Record Plant DVD... [img]tongue.gif[/img]

I saw Vinnie at Pasic in 1989 in Nashville, and he was wearing sweat pants, a t-shirt with cutoff sleeves, and was unshaven (and looking very bored & jetlagged). I think it was right before he got the Sting gig. He looked like he wanted to be somewhere else!

Well actually my point was kind of reflective of the situation Vinnie was in musically.

He wasn't looking after his appearance (according to friends who went to see the Sting gig) and didn't seem to care for the music, i.e. he was bored. This was a little before he went from the gig...

My posts were basically sarcastically in jest in response to the original topic, & more towards 80s trends/fads in general. [img]wink.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/wonder.gif[/img] I pretty much agree wiih Dazz.

In his defense, I think VC was experiencing "some changing, personal life-issues" around this time if you know what i mean...i think he was married around the time. But that's none of mine...

Hard to say what the effects of that PLUS lonnnnng endless tours can have on a person...

Definitely not to make this another post in someone else's personal situations. Just making a point. [img]cool.gif[/img]

1 - Absolutely. Tight fitting jeans are OOQ [out of the question, anymore].

Tuxes are a bear[skin] to play in [literally], but someimes you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess.
But it didn't stop Vinnie from laying total waste on the BRMSC2.

There are also nice, loose, casual-yet-also-dressy-formal pants out there AW. new black sweats & a nice T for rehearsal, practicing, or perhaps even clinics...but I don't wear them on stage for shows...unless it's an informal, colder, outdoor event or something.

Match, I'd forgotten about that cool suit he wore at the Buddy Rich throwdown with Gadd & Weckl. By the time he'd whupped them into shape though the sweat was flying. But, ye gods man! Were those white socks he was wearing with his Hush Puppies?

Lucky the fashion police didn't drag him from the stage for such a faux pas. [img]rolleyes.gif[/img]

When you're Vin Cola you're like a 900 pound gorilla, i.e. you do whatever the heck suits ya! That being said, I myself personally just me would never tuck my sweat pants into the tops of my socks. Especially in the vicinity of a videocamera.

My apologies, just had to get it off my chest.

One thing I won't wear is tight jeans when I play; I have to be comfortable and sweat pants are ideal. Would anyone really want to wear a suit while performing ala the Buddy Rich era?

And Vinnie can wear a dress as far as I'm concerned.

Chaps - chaps - chaps! My original post was made in an ironic sense - I really don't give a toss what Vinnie, or anyone else for that matter, wears or looks like,( there exist some extremely dodgy shots of me in the early 70s with some truly cring-worthy flared white trousers....so I have no room to talk!) and I didn't mean for this thread to develop into another mullet/running shoes/big hair debate!All that matters here is the musicality, but I do think there's always room for some light relief in a sometimes overly -serious world. I was totally blown away by the playing on this clinic footage, and couldn't really think of anything else to say about Vinnie's skills that hasn't already been said before, and, probably, much more eloquently than I could [img]wink.gif[/img] - so, all I could think of was to have a pop at that amazing track suit bottom/tee shirt combo!!!
Sorry if it appears that I was focussing on trivial factors - that's what you get from growing up on Monty Python I guess.
