Heraldry

This is a thread, if you guys like, to discuss the device of New Tindale. [img]smile.gif[/img] so our DM doesn't get cranky with us.


What's more, are we supposed to make devices for our individual characters? I suppose I could work on the Deeprune family mark frex.

I just went to that site you posted, the colors that Shanti mentioned for the town design/standard mesh good with that sites symbolism. Azure (blue) equals strength-loyalty as the background color. She also mentioned in the fore ground a longsword or bastard, tip facing up. I had previously considered the swords color to be silver. On that site silver represents sincerity and peace.
Near the top of the shield/ standard would be six stars - three on each side of the upper most part of the swords blade. The stars represent each character and Tarra had a neat idea of having each characters star coincide with the color of those boxes we each received the night of the festivities. But unfortunately I dont remember mine.
I think the stars would look better flowing in a circular position instead of just being alingned linear.
One thing I think would be nice as far as symbolism goes is to represent the opposite of the sword.. aka intellect / wisdom. Use of arms was only a small part that got us to this point but face it, a sword looks cool. I've been looking at sites seeing if I can find some symbolic picture that could maybe sit behind/in front or even besides the swords pommel???

Tarra and I talked about this months ago actually on a chat and I thought the design a good idea then as I do now but thats just me. This is all of ours so hopefully we will all agree on this or something else. The DM may say it needs specific inclusions of symbol/representation of Talagon or Hrothgar, Im not sure on that at this point. Well Im off to do more of my homework [img]smile.gif[/img]

There should be seven stars, not six, I think poor Oakshade sometimes gets forgotten. One each for Allie, Celene, Kel, Thurvold, Thaylias, and Shanti. To keep things consistent, one star for each of us, silver, bringers of peace to the land. Secondly this coincides nicely with the seven heavens.

I agree they should not be linear. Perhaps an upside-down U around the sword tip.

As for the mental aspect, the beams of light flowing from the sword to the stars could be considered the magic and intellect.

Blue and silver. Great combination of contrast, and I think it also works well in heraldry.

Oh damn. Thanks for catching that concerning the number of players/ stars. Also on the beams of light. Brain is not working.

FYI, in metaphysical symbology, the Tarot, and some religious beliefs, the sord represents the Air element, which in turn, represents intellect.

Yes that is true. The club is often the symbol for strife/combat.

If we're designing the colors for New Tindale, we can actually have two symbols: a flag to be flown over the town and carried into battle (Colors), and the coat of arms which will be emblazoned on shields and the soldier's tabards as well as displayed in the town's seat of government .

For instance the modern country of Canada has both.

The flag is the commonly seen maple leaf.

That has possibilities. Let me ask this, is everyone ok with the design Tarra and I worked out a ways back? If so lets us it on one of the prior you mentioned.
I would like the blue/ silver sword, stars, and beams to be the coat of arms.

I've no problem with the color scheme or design.

Since a flag is meant to be viewed and recognized from a distance, it should be rather simple in design, so how about:

A bold white stylized mountain range separating a field of azure on top and a field of green below?

The mountains represent the mines which are, have been, the life blood of the city.

Good point on the flags design, looks like we are set on our heraldry / standard. See you all tomorrow night.
