Does anyone know what's going on with Sandy West? Has she been performing in the L.A. area lately?
Hey Jett Ford, I was just thinking earlier today that I was going to post a topic about Sandy because I have been wondering what was going on with her myself. I read on another board that she had been injured in an auto accident a while back. I didn't know if this was true or not. I think Sandy is an awesome person and musician! I think she tends to get overlooked quite a bit, but I believe she is every bit as talented and dedicated as the rest. I wish she would get the lucky break that she as so deserved over the last many years.
Sandy is really underated as a drummer. If you really listen to her playing she is quite amazing IMO.
She is an incredible drummer, a total powerhouse. I know that not all of The Runaways reached the heights of fame, but the truth of the matter is, (as far as I'm concerned) fame has quite a bit of luck and timing involved. Even more so today, when I look at some of the new musicians who are so passionless. Every so often, one of the truly gifted breaks through--as in Joan Jett's case (it would have been a CRIME if someone who could write and play like that at 15 didn't get recognized) I know SO MANY talented people who keep plugging away, pushing hard, waiting on tables and doing crummy jobs just for the chance to do what they love to do and use the talent that they were blessed with. I don't have an answer, but I do know this: The Runaways have brought me an unmeasureable amount of joy and happiness for the majority of my life. Cherie, Joan, Sandy, Jackie, Lita, Vicki, and seeing Laurie in those "And Now..." videos--all of them. And for that I am forever grateful.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I did read in a magazine today that Sandy apparently has recovered and is starting to perform again.
In what magazine did you read this ?
What has she recovered from ??
And where and what is Sandy performing ?
Please tell me RIGHT NOW.
PS - I love it loud. I love Loudness. I tell you Secrets and that's my boyfriend's in the band.
A recent article about Sandy appears in the Spring 2004 Issue #51 of Rockrgrl magazine called Rhythm Nation: Why Drummers Rule.

Duh, what a dunce I am. At the top right of the message board page there is a pull down menu to show topics from various time periods. I thought the threads were disappearing. Mine defaults to showing topics from the last 20 days, but wait there's more!

It's a pretty good article. Sandy tells about the first time she met Joan Jett. Joan apparently took several buses to Huntington Beach and Sandy and her mother went to the bus station to pick her (and her Sears guitar) up! Also, speaking of magazines...there is a really good magazine that I've seen sold on Ebay that I would recommend to anyone who is a Runaways fan. It's a magazine called 'Crawdaddy'which has them on the cover. It came out around the same time as the Runaways first album. The article is about 7-10 pages long with lots of early photos and gives a lot of background on the girls and how they ended up in the Runaways. I wasn't real thrilled in the manner that it was written -- the journalist seemed to be equally interested in their sexuality as their music -- but, for the most part, I believe the info in the article is pretty accurate.
Hey, Gary:
That Crawdaddy piece is SOME WILD article! I paid i think $20.00 for it in 1995...There's one copy of it on EBAY right now for $50.00 (which i think is NUTS), but it really is a MUST HAVE for a Runaways fan. The pictures are great, the article itslelf, well...Kim Fowley talks about how he wishes Cherie would hang herself from a shower rod or something (can you imagine, saying that about a 16 year old kid?) Lita talks about the kind of guy she likes, Joan talks about a nightmare in which she gets shot, etc etc etc...It's worth having because they're on the cover and there are 8 pages of photos of them. It also shows what they were up against, how a typical reporter viewed them (as oppossed to the music they were playing).
Hi all! just found a pristine speciman of a poster sandy did for ludwig circa1982 . It's from their "stable of stars" promotional pieces that were only given to Ludwig distributors. since I forgot I even had it, I obviously have no need for it anymore, and can't quite toss it in the trash, (me and sandy go way back-can't dis her like that!)so if things such as this are permitted on this board I'd like to offer it up to anybody that makes a reasonable offer for it. if you want more info, email me.
If I'm doin something bad by offerin it up here, please forgive me and I'll go away.
I'm very happy to hear Sandy is doing better and I might want that poster if it is not folded. I remember seeing it once at the Chicago Music Store here in Tuscon!

FUN FACTS: The Crowd who formed in 1978 are an awesome beach punk band from Huntington Beach, CA. I found this info on their website: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/9953/
"Jim Decker's band in high school was called Witchcraft. The drummer in this band was Sandy West, who later became the drummer for The Runaways..."
"Joan Jett was a big early fan of The Crowd"
COOL HUH!?!?
Emily, that's a trip!! I've never heard of
"Witchcraft", in any Runaways article or anything. That's cool new info..

I haven't been able to view the message board for a couple of days, but I wanted to let everyone know there was a Sandy West sighting at the latest Blackhearts' concert at SummerFest in Brea, CA on Sunday.

Hey Mercedes from Kittie is on rockgrl magazine too! Im a big Kittie fan too, they started really young like the almighty Runaways. (another similarity is the number of bassists both bands have gone trough! )
Alma, I never knew Kittie had numerous bass players! I've tried them out, but never got really into them. Have you ever listened to the late, great Betty Blowtorch? If you haven't, give them a try. I fell in love with them at first sight when I saw their drummer wearing a RUNAWAYS T-Shirt! They really rocked(sadly, the lead singer was killed).
Also, just to stay on the Sandy West topic: I've written her a few emails, telling her how amazing I think her drumming is and how fans still love her, but have never gotten one back. Anyone else out there with better luck than me?
Hey Jett, I emailed Sandy about 5 years ago and got a response, then emailed her back a couple of times (after buying her cd 'The Beat is Back), but never received any futher responses. I've been fortunate to get responses back from everyone, except Joan and Lita. The email I sent to Lita was never opened and the website I got from went down shortly thereafter.
Hey Jett Ford!!
I have heard great things about Betty Blowtorch.. Bianca's death was a tragedy! Here in LA several local bands got together to perform in several memorial shows for her. I really need to check em out!

I had heard a while back that Sandy was going to be recording a 'full-length' album. Has anyone else heard any news on that??
Gary, I haven't heard anything. It seemed like some of the websites with Runaways news I always check out used to update alot more regularly. Now I wish there were a way to find out what's going on, if anything. It's kind of frustrating, being that i'm in NYC and Sandy and Cherie seem to be out and about more in California, (obviously as it's their home) and i'd love to go see them. I hope new news comes about soon.
Alma, RUN DON'T WALK to Amazon dot com and check out Betty Blowtorch's "Are You Man Enough" CD. It ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! Really, you won't be dissapointed. They're a cross between Runaways, L7, Kiss and AC/DC. I really dig them.

Man... this accident is news to me. Just discovered this board today and I'm learning all kindsa new things (like Sandy's connection to the Crowd... that rules! I love the Crowd! Great overlooked band). Well at least it sounds like she's making a strong recovery. She's never been an overlooked drummer from where I stand. Sandy's right up there with powerhouse drummers like Paul Cook and Topper Headon as far as I'm concerned. She hits those skins hard and steady and it really put a trademark on the Runaways sound. One of my favorite drummers ever. Sandy, I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you rockin' again soon.
I gotta say, yesterday I was listening to "Fantasies" off "Waitin' for the Night" and MAN, does she ROCK. What a talented musician, she still blows me away. I can't imagine how good she must be NOW, after all these years of drumming. I know we'll all get to hear her again.
Does anyone have info on this accident? How long ago it happened, how bad she was hurt?
Anyone need a car? Here's your chance to get one with a Sandy West signature!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2484027552
...of Joan Jett and The Runaways...???
not to start anything , BUT....wasn't there four other band members /plus Vicki? dosen't "THE" refer to more then one ?
kinda except for the high mileage, although I would never buy a car through eaby, just my thinking
If the person selling the car was a music reviewer working for a magazine or newspaper you could start something. You would expect them to do their homework and know who all was in the band. It appears it is just someone trying to sell a car, so I would cut them some slack if they don't mention ALL the people that were in the band: Sandy West, Joan Jett, Micki Steele, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Peggy Foster, Jackie Fox, Vicki Blue and Laurie McAlister. All of them were Runaways at one time or another.

I know two people that have purchased three vehicles through eBay and they are very happy with their purchases. I've even successfully sold a motorcycle through eBay. Different strokes for different folks.

Now THATS how you sell a car! lol!!! I`ve already got her auto, along with a leather jacket she gave me (bought during The Runaway tour) So I`ll bow outta the car sale!
