Buddy Rich and his career. Saw him live when I was a kid and stil think he's a freak of nature.

Seeing Weckl at Tower Records with Chick's new band in NYC while visiting my cousin. Record release performance for the first CCEB record.
I knew about him from seeing him play with Simon and Garfunkle the summer before filling in for Gadd.

Jack Dejohnette in Brazil with his band.
He was so musical and played so differently (totally relaxed and in tune) than when he played with his band in NYC. Played mallets on his drum and electronic hand percussion.


Alan Dawson -watching him sing any tune while playing a drum solo over it. He was truly the most musical guy I knew.


Seeing Joey Baron play a solo at Tonic in NYC. His sound and touch are so unique.
Every drummer should check him out!
He kept it so interesting and he plays a set the size of Ringo's.

Off Topic:

I like the organic players that can't be transcribed so easily, like when Jack Dejohnette places his hi-hats in different places within the meter. Pushing and pulling like taffy.

I think ostinatos (ie: clave's and etc..) are easily worked up by practice btw .


Of course Vinnie for his rhythmic perfection and lightening quick ideas. There are some bootlegs of Vinnie that made me miss a lot of sleep on this web-site. Just an amazing display of taste and technique. He has it all !

Virgil is a monster DRUMMER and awe inspiring to watch. Just haven't liked the music he's played.

Neil's wierd patterns on a tune like Red Lenses. They were musical and cool looking and I certainly couldn't figure them out.

Dennis Chambers with John McLaughlin, San Francisco around 98 I think. Heart of Things tour.

Vinnie with Jing Chi in Oakland, Friday 2nd set.

Weckl with Sten and Jeff Andrews in San Francisco on their first tour.

Virgil at a clinic about a year before the MD festival. (I went because it was free. There were maybe 12 people there and we were all like, "who the f*ck is this guy gonna be?" followed by, "OMFG."

Seeing my friend Roger Carter play. (local guy now living in Orange County area)

I agree with Blake1 - I saw Buddy Rich 5 times when I was a kid (he was in his mid 60s at the time) and it was always unbelievable. He seemed to get better every year!

Dennis Chambers every time, but especially his clinic solo at the Jazz Cafe during his Zildjian World tour '97. I've never seen drumming get such a reaction. DC knows how to 'hit the spot'.

Gary Husband is always amazing (on keyboards too!) I remember when he was drumming for Jim Mullen as support for Dave Weckl at Ronnie Scotts in 1999. He did a solo which I felt pretty much eclipsed Dave's efforts that night. GH's live stuff with Holdsworth is always astounding.

The first time and last time I saw Virg. The first time I said "Is this for REAL or what!" No one should be able to do what he does. And the last time being Amazed that he has developed that much more since the first time. The rhythmic
interdependence and the creativity and complexity in which he displays it. His phrasing is insane, his command of time, the speed, power, finesse, precision, endurance, showmanship just Freakish! to say the least. And how can I forget the FEET!

The first time I saw Weckl with Corea at college years back. I was just starting to really understand fusion drumming and WOW! what an introduction to it. The fluidity, precision, creativity, even the sound of his drums and his phrasing also. I was blown away by him and the rest of the band, Pattitucci, Gambale and Chick!!! A well oiled machine.

Vinnie for sure. Man oh Man! My real introduction to phrasing over the bar that was just whacked. The command of time, the touch, the taste, the mastery of modulation. Like Virg and Weckl Vinnie's phrasing is Amazing to say the least. A quality I look for in any drummer. My jaw was hanging for awhile.

A different slant was Roy Haynes about 8 years ago. Man I loved his approach it was just COOL! to say the least. Very different from my fusion faves but that is what I liked. He was loose but fairly precise, his feel was fantastic, and he was so darn creative in his phrasing. He was Great to say the least glad I got to catch one of the Legends of the past.

Seeing Ari Hoenig for the first time live was also an experience...

Also the first time I saw Tony play live, with his quintet.

My jaw was open the entire time. I couldn't believe he played so frickin hard...not to mention insanely fast and with musicality...he and Mulgrew Miller were mind melding...

Mulgrew's solo was also AMAZING. he had the audience eating out of the palm of his bad ass piano playin hands.

Uhhhh.... Tommy Lee playing a drum solo upside down!

WHAT ABOUT KEITH MOON!? He did some CRAZY things in his time, that's for sure. (explosives in his drums, goldfish and water in them too etc).

What is the most amazing thing you have ever seen (or heard) a drummer do and who was it?


For me it might have to be:


-Virgil Donati "splitting his body in half" and playing a single paradiddle between his left hand and foot while playing a double paraddidle groove between his right hand and right foot! Sick.

-John Blackwell Jr.'s dazzling performance on the MD 2002 Fest. (Holy Showmanship Batman!)

-Mike Mangini drum clinic, his speed, stamina and agility is inhuman.

-Recent Terry Bozzio (one of a kind!)

-Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny) playing left foot clave in odd time signatures, while playing clave on a block or cowbell in yet another time signature/pattern - while playing/soloing around these concepts!

I could go on and on... and will be back later!

Joel Rosenblatt with Michel Camilo at Wolftrap in the late 80'.

Tony Williams Quintet at Wolftrap. My bro and I were broke and we went to hang out at the gate and listen. Tony started the first tune with a killer roll. Then some guy walked out and saw my brother and I jumping up and down. He asked if we wanted to buy some tickets and we only had 2 dollars. He gave them to us. 5th row center. Amazing--Tony was the loudest drummer I ever heard, among other things.

Billy Cobham--Warning Tour Blues Alley. There was a monster roundhouse fill in Mosaic, and when Billy got to it, he did a silent air drum fill---sooo cool.

CCEB reunion show. Eric Marienthal is a monster. Chick's eyes were glued to Weck--the man.

Quiet Riot--Black Sabbath tour. The Cap Center was on fire that night.

Tommy Aldridge playing Boom Boom Out Go The Lights with Pat Travers live, opening for Bob Seger Stranger in Town tour.

Rush Grace Under Pressure tour---wow.

Flam, how in the hell did you see Derek Roddy with Flo Mounier!?!? Was this that weird NYC Art thing? Please give me the details!

my most amazing drummer moment would have to be walking off stage one night and hearing an incredible noise behind me ...when i turned around to see what could be making such a loud cacophany i was somewhat surprised to see our drummer destroying my guitar by repeatedly jumping up and down on it with the volume on the amp up full. *dennis chambers - at my place '92

w/ mike stern, bob berg, lincoln goines. middle of a burnin fusion tune, dennis drops a stick. on his hat side, leaning on stage were all PIT guys. a 4 bar break comes up, and the PIT dudes looked at eachother with sly grins. dennis, perhaps noticing, does a flurry of 32nds w/ one hand, criss crossing everywhich way... then lands on 1 with his trademark upstroke cymbal crash. heads drop in unison onto their arms on hat side of stage. HILARIOUS!!!!


vinnie - '89 potato

doug cameron (fusion violinist ala jean luc ponty) w/ tim landers (whatever happened to that guy?, eric johnson. vinnie playing an uptempo 16th fusion groove. me enjoying the music when off the corner of my eyes i see him receiving something with one of his hands. a guy on a table right next to him hands him a glass of oj. (vin is thirsty) to my disbelief, he's drinking oj and playing this crazy groove and making hits w/ one hand! puts the juice down after finishing and never misses a beat!

buddy rich memorial scholarship concert. after the first set, everyone in theatre during intermission is asking WHO IS DENNIS CHAMBERS?WHERE DID THIS GUY CHAMBERS COME FROM?

his solo on the tune 'i burn for you'. the most musical solo i'd ever seen.


kirk covington 2000 - la velee

w/scott henderson and bassist for yanee (yes, yanee). just the whole night, danny carey (next table) holding his head, saying expletives beneath his voice on just about every tune. HILIARIOUS!!

virgil making mike mangini look like lars ulrich at a dual clinic in boston.

In line w that train of thought, I would have to say that the "most Amazing Thing that I did'nt quite see [but heard about here in HODhb]" would've have to have been VC #2'ing his britches at a gig upon seeing Virg walk in the club...i think i recall that was "the story"...now that would've classified as somewhat "amazing" ;c)...similar to Portnoy opening up for Virg w Vai at G3... j/k ;cp

Now, b4 that upsets anyone, I might add that I too would prob do the same if i had to share the stage w him...Depends, tho...

Cesar, I saw Jack in Recife while I was in town playing and vacationing back in the late spring of (1997 ?) I believe. - a long time ago...

I met Jack and his wife and was asked to hang out with him (by the promoter) the next day but refused on the basis that Jack was one of my heros, (especially during that time) and that I didn't want to interfere with his family's vacation . [img]redface.gif[/img]

Prob the situation where a guy wielding a camcorder at Vinnie & the band was politely asked by Vinnie to put it away [after letting him film for a little bit], & the guy continued anyway, kind of ruffling Mr. C's feathers a little bit because it seemed somewhat rude, like he was defying VC...prob because the guy was from the orient & there was perhaps a language barrier...[either that or the guy was pretending there was!] [img]wink.gif[/img]

I forget we have a lot of newbies in here... I did a search for the original post but it was a couple years ago. Basically, it was after the NAMM show at the Baked Potato a few yaers ago and Vinnie just KILLED. It was the first time I ever saw him live. Maybe because there were people from all over the globe there, checking out Vinnie and the Jazz Ministry (Mattesison, Landau, Laborial) that some figured, what the hey, I will record the gig.

One guy was video taping and Vinnie told him to stop after the first song. He might not have understood English, but Vinniee was pissed, Abe Sr calmed him down. Second song, the guy starts taping again. He was sitting on the floor (place was PACKED--BP is a very small venue btw) and Vinnie blew up yelling at him it was so disrespectful. The guy should have stopped, he knew Vinnie was mad, understand English or not, and the Potato crew was so busy they did nothing. Guy taped again and long story short, after the first set, literally the last note played, Vinnie jumped up like a bolt of lightening and ran outside after the guy. We were all wondering what was up--did he have to take a leak, have a smoke, what? He demanded the tape from the guy. The place was so packed it was hard to hear or see anything a few feet away, but this is what I was told from a good source. It was hilarious really...Vinnie was so inside this gig, it was like Barry Bonds hitting off a little league pitcher!

There was only myself and my HOD buddy CBrady in the room for a good hour watching this rehearsal. Then later watching Dennis, Greg, and Louie do the same thing.
2. - Watching Vinnie with Dog Cheese for the first time in 84' in Santa Monica and meeting Bissonette there that night.
3. - Watching Buddy and Louie at Disneyland several times.

Oh wow! I saw Dog Cheese around '84 as well. My first time at the Spud! I guess the Jazz Ministry show was not the first time I saw Vinnie. I believe Vinnie was playing red Yamaha's. I have a Dog Cheese boot from about this time.
