Wow!! Gotta have one now. sort of glad I didn't shell out $5xx for the previous version http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif Damn just look at that monitor..it's a beauty!!! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

So do the peeps that already have one get some kind of a trade in discount or something? That would be sweet but it does suck that if not, we will be stuck with the old school version http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif Let us know if they are gonna do anything for the already faithful users. I'm willing to buy peoples old safeguard email me with your price
-
Ok, ok. You've got me thinking about a way to upgrade your existing units.
I see a piggyback box with MAP sensor and control knobs that would output a signal to the SafeGuard's TPS input pin.
Software mod also required to read this signal.
Fancy blue box or plastic potting shell? We could have our 5x4x1.2 extrusions cut down to maybe 5x1.5x1.2. Or a cheap plactic cube. Not.
Two or three months at most.
-
Wow. I can't believe this.
If it wasn't for the 'net I would have never learned how to work on my car, or learned about forced induction.
Plus companies and customers have never had a better way to communicate and make products better and customers happier.
Anyhow...enough blubbering about that.
This new dual monitor looks like stoich is now off the scale, and a more optimal 12.0 is in its place. Did the old rectangular one have stoich in the middle?
How accurate will the monitor (and O2 sensor) be out around 12? Will it be relaying meaningful details or just a simply indicating you are running more rich than stoich or lean?
-
"Additional features: FI/NA switch (forced induction/naturally aspirated). NA

Where is this FI/NA switch located on the Unit?
-
The FI/NA switch is switch #3.
The 4cyl/6cyl switch is switch #4.
The panels in the photo were made before I designed in the vacuum advance function.

Available now?
Group buy?
I am very impressed.

John,
Im sure there are plenty of people out there who would applaud your decision to design a secondary device, turning the existing Safeguard into an Ultra Safeguard.
Otherwise, as shown above, there are going to be a lot of old Safeguards for sale.
Your product is great!
Thank you!

OK, for those of us with a JRSC. Is this unit better then the JR-BTC in the way it handles timing???

It's good to see you posting here again TJ.

1QuickSi- This doesn't really do a "Better" job of timing retard then the BTC because it is basically working like a BTM in which it is going to take the timing out across the board all the way to the top. The BTC will take it out, yet put it back in where the timing retard isn't needed. So the BTC is somewhat like a reprogramed ECU with variable timing retard and timing advance features. Now what Ultra J&S box does do, is the job of a regular J&S plus BTM yet it differs because we can actually control when the timing is taken out, on top of the 0-20 percent rate of timing removal. So unlike the BTM and BTC, when can set the unit up to start taking timing out starting anywhere from 0-10 lbs of boost rather then 0 like all the others. The biggest problem with the regular J&S was everybody had to either make a choice 1)J&S=reactive or 2)BTM=proactive, or buy both. I chose to save my engine rather then do the guess work of tuning and having to hear the death tones (marbles in a can). Alot of people critized J&S because it was only reactive but now, this thing is gonna sell like hot cakes because it is both proactive and reactive in one little "Pretty Purple" box. Another thing is that you can't find a product that can do what the J&S does, and that is save your motor weather tuning or racing. I can't wait to see what John does for the upgrade, and those who do get their hands on a new one will be VERY pleased with the performance and features. Hope this helps

I just want the new monitor guage. I hate the fact that on my unit the rich is red and so is the knock retard. When I see red lights out of the corner of my eye I don't know if I'm running rich or I have detonation without taking my eyes off the road. The new way is better. Green will be lit when its rich so there is no confusion when you're trying to keep your eye on the road/tach.
Actually it would be ideal if they made the knock retard monitor a color that is not represented on the guage. Perhaps a violet color so there is no confusion at all.

It looks like this unit also allows you to alter the timing with respect to load on an NA motor. When you raise the compression of your stock motor you reduce the amount of timing advance it needs under load. On the other hand you don't necessarily want to run less timing for cruising and light loads. So, you leave your timing stock and let the J&S pull out timing depending on how low the vaccuum goes; lower vaccuum means higher load. It's similar in concept to boost retard, just below atmospheric pressure rather than above.
This new version really addresses a number of critical tuning issues faced by anyone who's serious about safely getting the most out of their modified car.
-
Marc,
Don't overlook the potential of that new display unit. The "power" mode reduces the granularity of the A/F gauge. Maybe not as accurate as a wideband, but should provide a lot better feedback as to what's going on when we're tuning fuel on the fly. I'm definitely going to buy one of those when they're available.
-
man that new monitor looks ghettofabulous!!!! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/eek.gif
I just want to know if us folks that have the older model can trade it for a new one? This would really interest me if I could trade it it for a new one.

Yes, because I think J&S still uses PWM (pulse width modulation) to control the knock LED's.

Zip-The new safeguard can still use your home made audible sensor monitor Rightt?

I'm willing to sell mine....it is in mint condition, has been used for 4 months on a Type R. I have the Dual monitor and would be willing to sell for $400-$450
-
In light of the introduction of the new model, does anyone want to get rid of their old model J&S? It would need to be in excellent condition, and be compatible with a Haltech equipped DSM.
And no, I don't want to pay $400 for it http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Does this new J&S system also take the place of an electronic boost controller as well? Also, does the gauge come with some type of mouting pod? While i think the oval is very stylish I can even think of where I might be able to put it...
-
So......any word on customers trading in their old J&S units for a new one and getting some difference of the new J&S?? http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My take on this is that asking J&S for an "update" or "trade in" is like asking Dell to accept the 1 gigahertz PIII PC you bought last year in exchange for the latest and greatest.
Things change. Technology gets better. Sometimes you end up with yesterday's technology too soon. No one is at fault, it just happens that way.
If you get lucky and are willing to accept yesterday's best thing, you can get a deal. Like when I bought a 99 Maxima 4 months before the 2000 model came out. 31K list, 24K price.
Some of you are now bummed that you have the older J&S. I'm bummed that I have the JR BTC (which didn't take long to reverse engineer! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif ) when I could've had that functionality and the Safeguard for $200 more today with the new J&S.
Such is life.

I love my old J&S and I don't want the new one. I just wish the knock retard/rich fuel reading weren't the same color. The retard monitor should be a color not represented on the guage so there is no confusion when reading the guage out of the corner of your eye.
Holden: Somebody already reverse engineered the BTC?! HA! That is too funny. Did we ever find out if MSD built the BTC for Moss/JR or was it someone else?
Marc
-
I'm thinking J and or S "popped the hood" on a BTC. Nothing wrong with that! (Unless the European Cybercrime treaty gets ratified.)
Greg
-
I'll keep my (relatively) new J&S unit.
And much as I might be totally happy with the new ultra unit, I'll just save some more pennies for the Zdyne unit now. (though [gulp!] 1000 dollars)
That and the old J&S should about do it.
(but I'll get rid of the MSD and vtec controller)
-
Holden: From what I hear, the hood is un-poppable on the JRBTC. Except for the pictures posted here, I haven't seen one.
By the way, thanks for setting us all straight on the upgrade thing. I can't afford to compete with myself.
-
All you have to do w/ the JRBTC is mimic the trigger signal using a 555 timer (or a microcontroller using a pulse out instruction) to generate the proper crank rpm signals, then look at the output of the BTC that hooks up to the distributor wire. You'll easily get your timing values from there as a function of rpm. Then observe at how the knob setting affects the timing output. Done. Reverse engineering is great! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
Not that J&S did that, but I'm just stipulating that it's easily possible to do it. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif
