Glam bands that could have been big

There are a few that I think had alot of potential but for some reason fell apart prior to being signed or right before recording. Number 1 - Tryx, had the songs, looks, everything. I know the story about them getting signed, too bad they could'nt "Hold On" 2 - Sweet Savage. I have an old Rock City News (or L.A. Roxx) with a picture of Bret Michaels, Jani Lane, and Joey C. Jones together on the cover. How did SS never get signed ? 3 - Rated X, great songs, good look, right around the time Poison got big. What happened ?
4- Big Bang Babies, I think they were a few years late but some of the best glam songs I have ever heard. 5 - Alleycat Scratch, same thing about trying to get signed in the grunge years but they had some cool songs and were alot better than most of the L.A. bands that got signed in the late 80's.

Any others I am forgetting ?

NOT SURE IF YA READ PREVIOUS POSTS WHERE I TALKED ABOUT WHY HTM IS NOT MENTIONED IN THEIR NEW PROJECT!!! BUT THAT'S THE REASON CUZ LONNY'S NAME APPEARS SO SPICIFIED IN PREVIOUS COMENT!!! BTW THEY WEREN'T BIGGER PERHAPS CUZ THEY STARTED WHEN 80'S GLAM WAS DYING!!! REMEMBER WRATHCHILD/NITRO/TRYX KNOCKED PREVIOUSLY TO 20MARCH1993 WHEN (IF I AIN'T WRONG) THEY PLAYED LIVE AT THE 1ST TIME!!! I think the bands that coulda been big...were...
Wikked Gypsy, and Tommi Gunn....Also Rozy Coyote shoulda made it.

I've been exchanging e-mails with a guy who worked with several of those strip bands...he also wrote the liner notes to the Hollywood Rocks book....i was told Tommi Gunn were thisclose to getting a deal.. and at one of their shows they even announced to the crowd that they had been signed..it just so happened the label guys at MCA were in the crowd and they walked out...was told that killed the deal...don't know why???
TRYX, i was told had horrible management....i still don't understand after playing clubs for a few years...they finally get a record deal with Scotti Bros....then decide not to do the album...anyone know the full story behind this?
WIKKED GYPSY...i was told these guys had way too many personal problems to deal with....still Atlantic records(i think this is the label) were briefly interested.

another couple of bands i always thought might have done well was HELTER SKELTER, STRIKE TWICE and BAD INFLUENCE....we'll never know!!

yeah Strike Twice was awesome.
Bad Influence had their music polished to a proffesional sound...well enough to be signed, but at the end it all went down hill

The band that should have been the Biggest ... altho bigger then the bands you have mentioned already ..and did have some success with numerous albums and most of us here love and adore ... they should of took over the world and never looked back but we all know the story ... were the one and Only........

Not sure on how big HTM might have been. They were way over the top and that never really worked even when glam was big (Nitro,Wrathchild). I liked them but could never get into them that much. Speaking of HTM, anyone check out Lonny's new band ? Dev (Estate) is in there too playing bass. Funny how they don't mention HTM as previous bands they were in. Here is the link if you want to

Vain I think should have been alot bigger than they were.

Vain should be a household name.
And as much as I enjoy the classic "No Respect" cd....I would choose "Move On It" or "Fade" if forced to choose a favorite.

I agree with the Vain one they should have been a lot bigger than they were, and also I think Tigertailz should have got further than they did when Bezerk was released, that was a great album

I think I'll change this from "could have" to "SHOULD have"...and say:

-Hanoi Rocks (although the "underground cult" following is part of what makes them so great, IMO)
-HTM/Peppermint Creeps (Personally, I still think that one of these days, the Creeps WILL make it, MTV be damned to the seventh level of West Virginia...er...Hell LOL)
-TIGERTAILZ!!!!!
-Swingin' Thing

Yeah Vain & TigerTailz should both have been multimillionaires as well .... Not to dis BulletBoy or Winger fans ... only using as an example ... but hard to believe those two toured with everybody back in the day on tour after tour and Vain & Tigertailz are for the most part (outside) of small glam groups... unheard of .

Hanoi Rocks would have been there along with Aerosmith and the likes,if things had happened differently... :-(

i am probably one of the biggest hanoi fans here, besides the legendary hanoirocksroxmyboat, and i really don't think hanoi would have been bigger then they are if things went in a different direction. first, there is always the morbid push you get when a death occurs. just ask yourself, how many people know hanoi rocks as the band that vince neil killed someone from. take for instance johnny cash. you never heard anyone say they liked johnny cash but once he died you have everyone trying to jump on the band wagon saying johnny cash was one of their biggest infuences or they listen to johnny cash all the time. nonsense, they are just trying to fit in and be trendy, try being original and make a statement like that when the man is still alive and not the hot topic of conversation. sorry, people like that annoy me.

anyway, back on topic.

sam yaffa already said that he was leaving the band after the ill fated american tour. 2 steps from the move was not a huge seller, granted they couldn't really tour in support of it but still, people were not lining up to buy it. bands like guns and roses/skid row were not around to push the hanoi name back then and to be honest, if hanoi was still around when guns and skid row were around, do you realy think ego maniacs like Seb and Axl would be gushing over hanoi and mike saying things like without hanoi there would be no guns and roses? of course not, that is something you say about a band that is no longer around, not your compitition. (unless it is an icon like the stones or aerosmith) it's the whole dead and gone so it's cool thing.

to be honest, if things didn't happen the way they happened, i could see hanoi maybe putting out one more cd after 2 steps then mike going solo to satisfy his ego, andy hooking up with an establish band and the hanoi name never being as 'big' as it is today.

I have to disagree with you on the Johnny Cash side of things there Bill. It depends on what bands you are talking about, but many of your underground RnR bands such as Dimestore Halos, Black Halos, Trash Brats, Kevin K. and other bands of that sort, along with bigger names such as Social Distortion (the main one), Paul Westerberg, Ryan Adams, and such have always said Cash was a main influence. Johnny was also HUGE at one point in his life, and the recent self-titled black album produced by Rick Rubin almost made him a household name again. I wasn't the biggest fan, I like some of his stuff, but Cash was hardly an unknown.

I agree however on everything you said about Hanoi.

As for Vain, I don't know. The one album, I think it is Fade has that first song that is almost exactly the same as Smashing Pumpkins "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"[/i]. Vain was good, but he always seemed to be a step behind what was popular.

Tigettailz were on time with the first album, but by the time they got around to Berzerk! it was getting mighty late in the game.

I think The Wildhearts should have been MUCH larger than they were back in the early 90's. Not exactly pure Glam, but enough in there that they could have helped keep the "scene" going a little bit. But I think the personalities and attitudes hurt them as much as the drugs and alcohol did.

Last Of The Teenage Idols should have also been pretty damn big.

T-Rex should have ruled the world.

i hear ya' on that carl but i was refering more to individuals rather then bands. you have to notice that after someone dies you get the people on messageboards and the like claiming how that artist was their biggest influence, they always listen to them and was a fan their whole life even though over the course or months they have never brought up even knowing any song by such artist. you know the ones, what's hot now so i can claim to be all over it.

as for bands, i don't really pay attention to their infulences because a lot of the time their are just contrived to match the genre they are trying to break into. (this doesn't hold true for bands that already have established fan bases) for example, if a unknown band was claiming to be a gothic band you will likely see Bauhaus, The Cure, Alien Sex Feind, etc... if it's industrial you will see NIN, Manson, Skinny Puppy, etc... Glam will get you Poison, Motley Crue, Kiss, etc.. basic rock will have Backyard Babies, Social Distortion, and whatever hot bands from the last 2 or 3 years were. You don't know how many times I would read 'Hanoi Rocks were our biggest infulence' and then i would listen to them and think that there may have actually been two bands named Hanoi Rocks, if you know what i mean. there is a difference between being a favorite band and an influencial band. I love Hanoi but by no means do we even closely resemble Hanoi besides the cover we did.

Off topic a bit, do you ever read Ain't It Cool News? It's a movie site, but the guy who runs it, Harry Knowles (pretty well known geek) pretty much cites everything under the sun as to being his major influence. Anytime a movie remake is announced, he spews venom about how the original shaped his life in sooo many ways. Anytime somebody dies, he goes on and on about how that person touched his life soooo much when he was a kid. I am impressed by some of these people who are so in love with something that everybody truely may have touched them, but at the same time, they do their true influences and favorites a disservice by NOT being "loya", if you will, to one certain person.

I've read this thread and agree with many people on their choice of bands, however I'd just like to say one 'individual' that I consider never had, and still hasn't got his true acclaim and worth or "made it big" is Ky Anto of Sassy Scarlet/Robin Black fame, that guy is an unknown entity, he plays any instrument you care to lay in front of him, produces, sings and writes and in my eyes a true musician, from blues and acoustic to scorching hot RNR, guitars to drums n percussion, Ky, imo has got the lot, and I so hope he gets what he so deserves.

I've never been to Ain't It Cool News but then again, i'm not much of a movie buff. I have only been inside a movie theater 3 times in my life. I have a hard time sitting still for 2 hours. It usually takes me two or three sittings to finish a movie. it took me over a month to watch all of signs. what's the saying, i have the attention span of a goldfish. i think that's why cartoons are high on my list of entertainment.

alot of my friends here are huge movie buffs. they will always quote movies like star wars, aliens, blah blah blah and i just sit here with a blank look on my face, my natural state.

carl or creeper I think t.rex was pretty popular before he died I remember him being on some weekly music show before mtv(dam I'm old) does any one else know what i'm talking about it was around 1975 I think beta was around

He had his success, but he never ruled as large as he should have. He never cracked the US, and especially at that time period, that was the main sign of having "made it".

TRex was very popular in the USA. The media doesn't want you to know that. That's why you never hear any of Bolan's hit singles on oldies radio here except for that song that Robert Palmer screwed up so fucking badly as a cover in the 1980s.

Top 40 radio didn't matter that much in the scheme of things. Most of the TRex fans here bought albums, and the singles were very, very hard to find anyway.

White Swan and Hot Love were hits here, as well as GIO. Jeepster and a few others skirted the charts, but not as big as the first three I mentioned.

I don't now if I agree with that he had a tv thing in england oh and off subject you must have seen yellow submarine beatles there's this game from japan for play station 2 katasometing tolaly ecpeting beatles to pop up I'll post the name later but it's so funny danceing pandas mushrooms rolling balls making stars too funny

<font size="4" face="Arial">Hey Miss Diva, Shane (after the Loveless of course) recorded a cd of solo demos. It doesn't sound like the Electric Angels or the Loveless but it is still very very good. To me, and i have been wrong before, it has an 80's pop duran duran feel and sound to it.

Elvis dies...the entertaintainment section of the paper is devoted to it..Marc dies a month later and he gets a tiny write up buried three pages in..Maybe in culty circles he was big in the states but certainly not in the mainstream...

That one is obvious Andii. But since they never got out of the UK, I couldn't very well speak for the US. I mean, it took me 15 years almost to get the damn thing. How's that for persistence!?! But yeah, shoulda been bigger, without a doubt. I would have loved to have atleast heard another album.

Markii, I agree with ya there. I mean, why did I have almost NO IDEA who T-Rex was until Power Station if they were so big? Trust me, I grew up on music, but I had never heard the name T-Rex or Marc Bolan. There may have been success in the early 70's, but he sure didn't take over the US.

[B]<font size=3 color=purple>A song such as "Telegram Sam" (which I love to bits) wouldn't have even been a factor on the radio back then...you had to stumble on that kind of music by word of mouth..I use to watch all those late nite rock shows on the weekend religiously when I was a kid and only once did I come across T.Rex (Don Kirschner's Rock Concert was my fav,it was cutting edge for the time)..I can't remember what they played but at the end of the song the amps supposedly exploded and green smoke came out of them..It was cool for the time..
