To be honest I like every drummer for his / her unique voice on the instrument [img]graemlins/smarty.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img] but above mentioned are the ones I listen to most. What I often see in Europe is the different mentality which differs unfortunately from the USA-way of making music or making a living from music. It is part of our culture, we don't have country, jazz, blues and sometimes not even Rock and Roll. We all have to learn it and make it our own. It is sometimes not in our blood and that's why it often sound stiff, mathematical. In the Netherlands when you meet another drummer he (more or less) refuse to hang out because you might steel his tricks. Bad words about other musicians. On stage; miking cables like spaghetti are always visible, you are just the band and the P.A. guys... they act like the audience is coming for them. Open drumsound? No way, stagetape! I have my drumset, yeah but we have our stagelights. Do you need all those toms and cymbals? [img]wink.gif[/img] What I am trying to say is that there are lots of very good musicians but due to lack of mentality, professionalism, and the lack of interest and care (and the different club situations in Europe (who's going to a unknown band? we would like to dance on our Saturday night on some hardcore dancemusic)) most unique musicians are unheard and don't get the chance to play with others within the community of the working with a national act. A pity. Thank god there are some who apparantly have managed to make the USA-type-of-making-music their own for which I make a big bow. JP

Yeah, Phil Gould is one of my favorite too, I'm really crazy about his sound and drumming with Level 42.
- Phil Colins, his first three solo album, I like !!!
- Ian Mosley, what he did on Marillion's "Clutching At Straws" is just perfect to me.
- And of course Manu Katch? (Peter Gabriel "So", Tears For Fears's "Badman's Song", Sting's "Nothing Like The Sun"...)

Maybe you'd like to check out Ian Mosley with Dutch prog band Trace (CD 'Birds', from 1975), where he sounds like a completely different drummer, jazzier. Bob Henrit, man I have never heard him play, I know him to be one of the most knowledgable cats in the world about vintage gear, but I know little about his actual playing. Any stuff worth looking out for?

I used to have dealings with Bob when I was an Arbiter endorsee, back when I used to do NYJO.
He was a lovely man and you're right, very knowledgable. He used to play with The Kinks. I haven't seen him in a few years though, as Arbiter moved from Hendon to Bournemouth I believe.

Bob Henrit had the main drumshop in London (or the whole UK?) at the end of the 70's - beginning of the 80's. It was a great store, all drummers used to hang out there, I have great memories of that place.
