I saw Chicago at a Casino near me not too long ago. Despite not being into them much they were very good. Tris was solid...powerful guy. Plays a MEAN MEAN Harmonica!

also, that is the most creative / thinkin out of the box usage of the gibralter rack system (or any rack system for that matter.) that i've ever seen. kinda looks like some kind of robotic crawler of some sorts. really cool!
rehearsal was in burbank? must've been at 'center staging'. it has to be.
sure would like to rehearse there for a tour someday........
one of my favorite grooves by tris is on chicago's christmas album. the tune "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!" very fat groove with a nice, deep, pocket. great feel! enjoy!

I did a gig with a band called JND www.jndlive.com and we opened up for Chicago at the Greek Theater in L.A. for two nights about two years ago. Tris was such an awesome guy to hang out with. Actually the whole band was pretty cool! I would hate to be Tris's roadie, that drum set was ridicules...

Been into him since "discovering" him back in the 80's on Jeff Berlin's Pump It album; & then on Richard Marx's album...then also saw him at the end of Rick Gratton's vid [img]wink.gif[/img] ...
Then again w Chicago in '03 - did a nice job at that show. [Nice solo, too.]

Completely off topic but several months ago I was watching the Travel channel and they had a show about people living in million dollar mobile home trailers: Tris was a proud owner.
I remember hearing Tris back in the day with Kenny Loggins; very tasteful player. He seemed to own a large portion of the airwaves in the late 70s early 80s.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I just absolutely cannot believe what I'm reading here, guys. In my view, Tris might be the worst drummer making a living with the instrument.
Talk about a guy with technique that's painful to watch...my goodness!!
As far as I'm concerned, he plays with no feel, no creativity, no expression, no groove. He just pounds the shit out of his drums.
The biggest gripe I have is that he so irreverently steamrollers over almost all the classic Chicago drum parts. It seems to me that he has no "ears" for a tune, the way that Gadd, Porcaro, Weckl (and esp. Vinnie) can hear the important subtleties in a tune, and shape the drum part around that.
Many of the "grooves" he superimposes over what the rest of the band is playing sound like a 7-th grader practicing his weekly lesson from Joel Rothman's "Generic Rock Beats for the Modern Drumming Enthusiast, vol. 1"
I know Tris has played with everybody and his brother, and has had many gigs that I have not had (and will never get), but that as a fan of the music, you have to draw the line somewhere.
Like I said, I don't want to be mean, and I'm sure Tris is a TOTALLY cool guy to hang with...but just evaluating the drumming and musicianship...well, I just don't get it.
I'm a huge Chicago fan, and I know several others (I'm even related to a few) who are not drummers (most not even musicians), and they comment on the stiff feel of Tris's drumming.
Again, I don't want to be offensive, but there's one thing that troubles me about some of the posts on this board over the years.
I see SO many posts here that rip Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, Anton Fig, Manu Katche, Simon Phillips, Alex Van Halen, Gregg Bissonette, Dennis Chambers and many other AWESOME drummers to shreds, and at the same time talk about Abe Jr., J.R., Keith Carlock, etc. like they're the second coming of Jeff Porcaro.
Tony and Vinnie could blushda their way through an entire song, and most would think it's the most brilliant thing they ever heard. But if Steve Smith or Gregg B. do it once, everyone wants them arrested for aggravated blushda.
Sorry, but I just don't get it.

Wow - I think Tris is a GREAT player. I've seen him live bunches of times, and even did a session with him when I lived in LA - we traded off on tunes, using his DW kit. He's got killer chops, rock-solid time, and is smooth as hell - at least he was the last time I saw him.
His playing on the early Kenny Loggins albums was a big influence on me, as was his playing on Fee Waybill's first solo album.
And for a lesson in how to "work the room," I also have to give him props for being one of the best schmoozers I've ever met - right up there with Gregg Bissonette. Truly an LA kind of guy.
The only complaint I have is that one time when I saw him with Loggins, his playing was SO metronomically perfect that it bugged me on a couple tunes, which I thought should have breathed more. But I couldn't help but notice that Kenny Loggins has yet to call ME to do one of his records.
Anyway, count me as a Tris fan - I have been since the 70's. Plus, he was the guy who showed me how to play a one-handed cross-stick flam, so I could FINALLY play the Gadd lick from Al Jarreau's "We're in this Love Together." I'll owe him one for that forever!

As I said, I did not want to be mean or harsh, and I certainly don't want to make it a persoanl attack on him. Although I've never met him, everything I've heard is that he's as cool as they come (which is sometimes hard to come by in the music busines....or any business for that matter).
But, I feel strongly about my opinions on this one (in case that wasn't obvious from my previous post [img]redface.gif[/img] )
I also did not mean to imply that he's a total zero of a drummer (that Gadd rimclick lick is always worth "something," right? [img]wink.gif[/img] ), and my hat's off to him for what he's able to put on his resume, but I've seen him live with Chicago several times, and on video several others, and I just find it to be the drumming equivalent of someone scratching their nails on a blackboard...I just can't listen to it for very long.
"thrill of the kill" awesome...........Fee Waybill's disc Read My Lips is a must cd, Jeff, Jerry Marotta, JR, Tris and John Keane.
Okay, just to prove I'm not all bad....
I'm not ashamed to admit this (just forgot about it earlier during my rant).
I hereby admit that I've always dug the tom fills leading into the last section of "Hold On to the Night" by Richard Marx.

Hard to get past how COOL Tris is. I met him a few times and each of them was like he knew me all his life. Just an impressive personality.
The last time I saw Tris was at the Carlos Vega Tribute gig at LaVeLee. Tris played well, but I understand the "feel" thing maj61 discussed.
As for copping parts, I've discussed this many times. I've thought about playing covers and copping signature fills or grooves several times actually. Ironically, when it comes to covers, I feel you NAIL IT, but, when Steve Ferroni played to Jackson Browne's, "Runnin' on Empty" at the LaVeLee gig, he did NOT play Kunckles classic "SD/ BD combo" fill out of the last chorus. On the second set, he played a different fill. WHAT? That's like skipping Smith's classic fill in Journey's, "Separate Ways" or playing "Rosanna" without ghost notes, or worse, playing an 8th note groove!
Tris is cool!
Tris is heavy. Just check out "Who's Right Who's Wrong" on the Kenny Loggins album Keep The Fire . A beautiful lesson in orchestrating a drum part.
As far as Chicago goes,mja61, I can see your point a bit because there is no attempt made to cop any of Seraphine's vibe which was brilliant to me (being a child of the sixties). It's the same for me with Ricky Lawson barreling through Josie with Steely Dan whereas if you listen to Keltner's original version there's all kinds of subtlety and nuance. I think it's the age we live in. People want to play perfectly and in the process lose the vibe.

I'm a HUGE Tris fan and he is one of my biggest influences for sure. He's why I got my Tama kit in 1980. [img]eek.gif[/img]
I saw him with Kenny Logins back in 1982 and just KILLED. Tris HAS found the fountain of youth: Kauai. He spends a LOT of time at his house there when not on tour or doing sessions in LA.

Yeah, tanning is overrated... Tris can't do the cool things that i can during a show cause he ain't pale-as-a-babies'-booty-white, like i am. I've seen 'Stomp' or 'Blast', where they use the black lights and the white marching sticks... i don't need the sticks, i just wear short sleeves and it looks totally dope. Cirque Du Soleil was going to use me as a clown to save on the costs of white make-up, and have me do naked backflips across the stage under the black light, but i need to practice.
Tris does have amazing time, so i have heard. Kenny said he finds a time and just LOCKS into it. Back in the Dec. 95 MD, Kenny mentions how he was editing together old live material of them and how they weren't using a click but Tris managed to get the takes within 1/10 of a second, and these are live gigs over the course of a couple tours... i can't imagine.

I was def suckered in by it...I used to "live" in the sun...you're implicitly encouraged to do so because, "by golly-gosh-darn it - you look so [healthy & hollywood] fabulous!!"...that is, until youre sitting at the derm's waiting to get that golf-ball sized melanoma / carcinoma "frozen" off your face...with hopes of more of the same occuring anywhere at any time on your person...[death being one of the more severe long-term exposure risks/consequences]. Kids, they aint foolin around when they tell ya about this stuff.

If I'm not mistaken, (someone check, as I dont have the CD liner notes handy), Tris played "My Heart Wants To Know" on the Tribute To Jeff CD. Ya wanna talk pocket, groove, and feel? I remember being profoundly moved, and misty eyed listening to that song for the 1st time, not only because of the moving tribute to Jeffrey, but because of the deep, soulful groove on that tune. In my book, Tris has earned his groove stripes with that tune alone.
