Can anyone re-cap who has won the Region D Championships in baseball for the past 10-15 years?
In 1996 I think it was PV. In 1997 I know for a fact it was J.J. Kelly.
i think it would be safe to say jj kelly for about half of them....gate city had 3 in a row....powell valley had one or two i cant remember....and haysi won last year
I suspected JJK would have the majority. I'm hoping some folks have the specific years and winners.

96 PV
I know 97 and 98 were JJK. They may have went all the way through 02 with the regional title.
03-05 was GC I am pretty sure, and 06 was Haysi.
Stripes, how long has it been since a CD team won a region title in baseball? I know St Paul had a great run there in the late 90s but did they ever get by Kelly?
i don't believe St. Paul has won a Region title since the early 90's, '91 or '92.
St. Paul never was able to beat Kelly in the late 90s. Those Kelly teams of the late 90s had too many horses.
It wasn't in '91. Kelly holds the claim to that one too.
OK.. from the info I've found so far, it looks like
Hopefully someone can verify or fill in some blanks...

They never could get out of regionals in the late 90s. In what was Blake Whitenake's last year as HC (95 or 96), they lost in the regional final to make go on the road and lose in substate play.
I would guess it would have been SP in 90 - 92 range they may have won the regions, but Wise was strong that time as well, so I am not sure when the last time a CD team would have won the regional title.
'95 was Coeburn. It seems like they made a huge comeback against PV in the finals and went on to get screwed out of a state championship up in Brentsville.
Makes sense.
The VHSL record book is showing that Brentsville won the state championship in 1995, beating Coeburn 3-2.
Coeburn won state in 1975 and 1978.

Actually PV won it in 92 93 94 95 and 96. Coeburn beat PV in the State-Semis in 95. PV beat Coeburn in the Regions 17-4.
OK. Updated list would then look like...

I think it was Kelly in 99 and Coeburn in 2000. I remember when Chad Longworth and company were freshman they lost to Glenvar at Kelly in the quarter-finals. I think Coeburn won the next year and also lost to Glenvar at home in the quarter-finals.
That sounds about right with Kelly losing at John Battle I believe in 00 in substate play.
I'm pretty sure 99 was Kelly. Longworth would've been a freshman on that team. As for 2000, Im not sure.
2000 was Coeburn.
Yep, I remember now that 2000 was Coeburn. They beat Kelly in the Region D finals. Pretty good Coeburn team that year.
Another tidbit is that Kelly has qualified for the state tourney 9 out of the last 10 seasons. That's pretty good.
Sounds like a complete list now.
It looks like Castlewood also had a pretty good run in the 70's and around the mid-80's.

91 should be JJK also. They won state that year.
CW has a couple of titles in the 70-80's era I do believe.
Yea coeburn got screwed out of the championship game in 95 my older brother was the pitcher and everyone ive talked to has said coeburn was winning in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs and with two strikes they told me the next pitch was right down the middle and they called it a ball and coeburn went on the lose the game b/c of it
Lol...Conspiracies abound!
How many out there actually go to any high school baseball games? In relation to football and basketball where would you rank it?
I would rather go to a baseball game than a basketball game any day. Now in comparison with football there is more excitement at a High school game than at a baseball game. I enjoy going to professional baseball games.
i'm all about the baseball. i want to point out the impressive teams PV had in the early 90s. they were loaded.
I think it's safe to say the LPD has been dominant in baseball. However, unless PV and Kelly get back to their old dominance, I see the CMD being what the LPD used to be in baseball.
I was one of the coaches back at PV in the 90's and we had some players. We should have won three state titles instead of one, but that is baseball.
Hoping to see a few games this year.
Obviously, baseball is not as popular in the LPD as football and basketball, which is kind of ironic considering the LPD has won 14 of the last 15 Region D championships in baseball.

IMO: Baseball at the high school level ranks far beneath football and far above basketball. I do enjoy all 3, however. For pro baseball, I haven't watched 9 innings since they went on strike. And don't intend to.

I agree 100% The early starting time of Baseball games keeps me from watching many but I would Much rather watch a baseball game than a basketball game

Now if we were to rank these teams against each other based soley on their play to the regional championship game how would it stack up? If we had a power poll, how would you rank them 1-16? Don't know if we have enough info on each team to do this, but it would make for some interesting debate.
99 and 00 D2 football went to Honaker.
96, 97 DI goes to Appy
ok thats right they beat Clintwood in overtime
Also flipflop Appy and RC with 2000 and 2001.
LPD has been very dominate in Region D football, but I think the restructuring and addition of the CMD is going to really change that.
