Mike was awesome at the NAMM show. Mike did this at the worlds fastest drummer stage. Mike first broke Art Verdi's traditional grip record and now he broke Jotan Afanador's WFD record of 1199 single strokes Who is faster than Mangini? Maybe Superman! ha ha

haha...i recently went to a mike mangini clinc and even though he is a good player and hes got fast hands i dont particularly enjoy it. He also seemed to have very narrow mind about his teaching methods and he implied several times that his way was the best way to learn etc
-
My dogs leg twitches very fast in his sleep. One night I taped a drum stick to his leg, and with ONE LEG he played a single stroke roll and hit 1300 single in 60 secs.
He's not a musician though, so maybe it doesn't count. Does it?

Why am I reminded of Blazing Saddles.
"But I shoot with this hand."

Its obvious that people question the musical value of being able to play so fast, but here's how I view it:
Do I consider him a great musician because of what he managed to do? No. Is such a skill useful when applied to the drum set? Probably not, but his finger muscles are probably very developed and this always helps.
I must admit that I am very skeptical about these speed competitions. I tend to view it more like this:
Some NBA games have slam dunk competitions and 3 point shoot outs before the game. These world's fastest drummer things should be viewed the same way. It's just a little entertainment - although some people that enter the competition see it as more than that. I just think it's fun to watch at times.
-
How about some fast ear competitions?
Oh never mind - Steve Coleman's not holding auditions.
-
Well, let's see.
I can respond: "So what?"
But rather, I will say this:
Mike Mangini not only can move his
hands very quickly, he can play the
drums and that is more than 1200
strokes per minute.
