Hi Everyone,

I have always wondered why the American 2.00 bill is considered bad luck? Are they even printed now? When and why did this start?

I have travelled many times to the States in my 44 years as I live close to the border, and am sure I never saw, or was given, one when I was south of the border. I purchased the scarce bill a few years in my Canadian hometown in a flea market...in fact, I am looking and even touching it as I write this.

I guess I find this a little comical as I'm not superstitious in the slightest.

If anyone can help me, I'd love to hear from them!

Thanks!

Stephen

I keep a few in my purse for good luck, one my mom gave me on a birthday years ago (shhh don't tell she defaced it by writing on it)...I've never heard that they were bad luck, only people didn't use them like THEY ( you know those guys who make all the big decisions) thought We ( the consumers) would...kinda like the Susan B. Anthony, poor susie coin just fell by the wayside. I actully used to have a customer I waited on who always tipped me in 2 dollar bills.

That is a strange superstion for sure. I see $2 once in a great while, they never scared me. I heard a rumor about if you tore one corner off of the bill the bad luck would run out....

It seems they are used, primarily, at the dog track!

I've never heard anyone say they were bad luck before.

$2 bills are frequent around PA as one of our
grocery store uses them for change all the time!
They have become well known for it. They also
use 50 cent pieces for change. I collect them
both and save them for special things like
birthdays, trips and so on. Our last trip to the
beach was funded with $2 bills my mom and I
collected and cashed in....we had over $500!

I have never heard they were bad luck though. Just
people dont like them because they dont fit in a
cash register draw(take up extra space) and they
dont work in soda machines...

Great comments everyone!

I remember years ago my parents bought some in a bank in New York state, I believe.

Anyway, if I have this correct, the teller used thin gloves to open and count the bills. After placing the bills on the counter, she used a book (or a similar object) to pass the bills to my parents. Under no circumstances would she touch the bills with her bare hands.

My (way) older sister has a phobia about the $2 bills and would rather take a pocketful of change before accepting a bill.

My mother sorta collected them and probably had about 20 of them at the time of her death.

It is strange hot superstitions like that get started
