I looked at the Dennis site today. They had a thread on the sequence of SARS. It really broke me up. When I looked in, none of the posters had a clue about interpreting Blast data on nucleotide sequences. Of course the press hasn't done much better.

If you are interested, go to the ncbi site:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/BLAST/

and look at FAQ on the left. It will give you an introduction to the interpretation of E values and such things.

I am leaving town again, but have fun.

    Best Wishes,,,,,

Hey - greetings from a SARS hotspot. Long time no see. Who still hangs out here?

Z, would appreciate your take on this SARS thing. Life here in Toronto has not been disrupted too much for the vast majority of the population. If you are a health care worker, have been under quarantine or have a relative in hospital it has been a pain. However, good infection control procedures seem to have stopped the outbreak in hospitals....if only *everyone* who is under quarantine would strictly observe it...

Hope you are all enjoying your spring. It was 83F in Toronto yesterday and then 40F today. Winter just refuses to release its icy claws.

Z, I went to your link. Its a trifle too bio-techno-geeky for the likes of me. Can you recommend a relible SARS link for the peptide-impaired? A friend of mine is leaving soon for Singapore for a wedding and in June he is going to Beijing for a conference. He does not seem too concerned about SARS.

In fact he is pleased at the low airfares now available to east Asia.

    Lars:

I am on the west coast, but the CDC runs a real time report for the general public on SARS:

    http://www.cdc.gov/

The last email I got recommended against non-necessary travel to the regions at the center of origin.

    Best Wishes,,,,,

Z, thanks for the link. I have forwarded it to Joe. I think he will go to Singapore, no matter what.

Greetings from the leper colony! Just us 4 million Torontonians getting on with everyday things while those WHO-heads in Geneva sit on their brains.

Great prices on hotels up here now! Give it another week and they might even pay you to stay. I'm supposed to go to San Fran later this summer....maybe they will quarantine me when I get there LOL

For those of you who want to follow this whole SARS thingy a little more closely, here are some interesting sites:

http://www.sarswatch.org/ - good round up of latest articles, opinions etc.

    http://agonist.got.net/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=SARS - good discussion board

http://home.so-net.com.hk/~pns/ - This is a guy in Hong Kong

http://pekingduck.blogspot.com/ - This is a guy in Beijing

http://www.sarstravel.com/ - put out by some people in the travel industry who are pissed at the panic being generated by the media
