Dannarriah?s people are not wealthy. Far from it, just a black family where everyone works just to make ends meet.

They finally found her the other day, thirty miles from the bedroom she shared with one of her three sisters. He had wrapped her in a yellow sheet with pink flowers, before he discarded her, ironically, in a place called Pleasure Island.

Dannarriah had been raped before she died, the tear streaks dried and faded upon her cheeks. Dannarriah was four years old.

As the news is filled these days with this sort of incident, I pause in wonder. Are the reporting agencies better, more efficient, or are we somehow unspeakably worse? Have our babies always been carried off to the swamps, raped and murdered? Should we just accept it as a sign of the times; more people, more crime?

Private prison operations were the growth industry of the last decade, with no end in sight today. We treat prisoners with human compassion nowadays, no Devil?s Island, no dungeon, no Ublianth of darker times past. New concepts for a new civilization. Yet the bodies of the innocent continue to fester in their private dumping grounds.

And who?s to blame? You? I? Where have we gone wrong?

    Opinions, please.

What? nobody gonna reply. That's not like this crowd. Or are you all still trying to figger out what an Ublianth is? I have no earthly idea how to spell it (like you couldn't tell), but it was the darkest hole in the prison of the doge in ancient Venice. It translates, I believe as a "place to be forgotten in".

Maybe we should bring back the concept, you think?

We're no worse than before. This is just the "story of the summer," unfortunately. Last year it was shark attacks, and there were no more of those last year than in previous years also.

I remember when this first happened, but it never got the attention other child abductions did at the time. Found it buried towards the middle of the paper when it happened last July.

Who is to the blame is the bastard that did this to her - and noone else - unless further information is developed

The heightened awareness could be linked to the Amber Alert system that many states have put into place. It has already been praised in saving a couple of young girls live in CA last motn I believe.

The Orange Leader Online News - FBI hunts clues at girl's home

By Royal M. Hopper III, The Orange Leader

A team of FBI investigators were just "looking for clues" in the disappearance and death of Dannariah Finley when they visited her home Thursday.

FBI agents were seen taking items in and out of Finley's home in the 1000 block of Fourth Street, including a large brown Teddy Bear and other items from the house, placing it into a parked van. The Teddy Bear was later returned inside the house.

Neighbors reported Thursday that police had also searched Velma Jeter apartments.

Orange Police Maj. Steve Jones said an FBI evidence collection team that had visited the house and other areas in Orange and Port Arthur earlier in the case were back "taking more samples."

The team will send the evidence back to FBI laboratories for examination.

Finley, a four-year-old Orange resident, was reported missing from her Fourth Street home around 1 p.m. July 4 by her mother Jamie Arnold.

Arnold said she had noticed the child missing about 10 a.m. and called relatives looking for her before calling police.

The report sparked a massive search including hundreds of volunteers Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning. A body matching Dannarriah's description was found on Pleasure Island by oil pipeline workers.

DNA samples later confirmed the body was that of Finley.

At least 25 FBI agents including 15 from Beaumont and 10 from Houston were part of the 60 law enforcement officers on the original investigation team.

The team has collected evidence such as foot prints and tire prints from both sites as well as other evidence for the investigation.

Investigators have also questioned 30 to 40 registered sex offenders in the Orange area, a standard practice in cases involving children, a police spokesman said.

The FBI evidence team drained a ditch near the spot where Finley's body was discovered shortly after she was discovered in the early stages of the investigation.</font></td></tr></table></td></tr></table></BLOCKQUOTE>

    Lon,

I don't think anyone is to "blame" (except for the sick person responsible). I agree that what I think we are seeing is a higher emphasis on this type of case, and as noted above, new laws and ways to deal with child abductions have probably helped save one or two of these kids. So the way I look at it, we are doing better in dealing with this, by bringing the horrifying reality of these cases into our everday lives.

I also think that population is somewhat of a factor. The more people in this country the more "fucked up" people there will be. But as far as a condemnation on our society, I don't see it that way.

Sick perverts have been abducting, molesting and killing kids for a long time. Certain people are so messed up that they will do this and at least the first time it happens you may have no warning.

My personal opinion is that the Amber Laws help and also bring this subject up to us moreso than in the past. Take it for what it is worth.

You can also have my opinion on what should be done to these sick individuals. It is simple, if you catch one of these "persons" they should be eliminated. I really don't care if they are eliminated by lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, by firing squad, or if they are beaten to death.

In order to quiet the inhuman punishment clique (who are also sick perverts in their own way), use a simple lethal injection. They just go bye-bye.

Society has no compunction about killing rabid animals and to me that is what is involved here. Eliminate a threat to society. If it has to be painless to the perpatrator then so be it. Though why we should worry about that, when you have evidence of the tears of a four year old that were shed while she was raped by an adult, is beyond my comprehension. Shoot them like you would any rabid (read that threat to society) animal.

    Again, JMHO.

Lon, I think the increased media focus on child abduction/murder cases has created a misperception that we're experiencing a statistically significant increase. Like others have said, I don't think we are. I also don't think this indicates any sort of decline in Western civilization. Many countries without our technology, open (albeit sensationalistic and biased) media, and cultural values have even more alarming rates of child murder and abuse. It's been so for thousands of years.

What I hope doesn't get lost in the media spotlight is the fact that the vast majority of child murder cases are perpetrated by the child's parents. That is a horror we as a society should have some power to affect, unlike the random acts of violent sociopaths. When it comes to punishing those in either category (parent or stranger), I'm with JBT.

Naw, my spelling usually sucks, lol. But "Oubliette" is the title for an X-Files episode that was on recently. Weirdly enough, the story is about a serial kidnapper/pedophile.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the number of abductions and murders are decreasing, but the incidence of sexual exploitation of children seems to be increasing.

    http://www.missingkids.com/

Lots of good information on that site. There was one statistic I found especially chilling: of the hundred or so children that get murdered by their abductors every year, most are killed within three hours of their abduction. That doesn't give anyone much time to rescue the kid.

Personally, I think the increase in exploitation can be blamed--at least in part--on the internet. The net provides a safe, anonymous venue for pervs to hunt for victims. I also think it encourages an escallation in predatory behavior. The man--or woman--starts with fantasies, moves on to porn, then teen chat rooms, then email, then phone calls, then RL meetings...

The internet is an all-you-can-eat salad bar for the victimizers. It gives them opportunities and access to potential victims that they never had before. It's scary.

Big Kumara, I bow to your superior spelling abilities. It's tough to look up a word, when you're not even close. Thanks.

And Just Passing By, are you from this area? They found Dannarriah's body just ten miles from my house, and my wife teaches in Orange. Dannarriah would quite probably have been one of her pupils in a couple of years. I suppose that's why this touched me, it's here at home.

And JBT, thank's for the comments, that's just what I was asking for. I know there are readers here who will express their opinions, and I enjoy hearing them and often am educated by them.

    Lon,

That is why they are called sociopaths. They are so alien in their way of thinking that they cannot even begin to function normally within society. Sure they can adapt to cover their true self, but these are people who would think that INVAR makes sense. Sorry, maybe a bad example but the nearest that lept into my mind.

The situation with the leniency of the courts and the extremely high liklihood that such individuals will repeat their crimes is why we now see the sexual offender/predatorlaws being passed. Personally I think that these are a joke in that they need to keep closer track of these peoples' activities, but at least here it is comforting to know that you may be informed in the nespaper that a sexual offender(and what kind offense they committed) has moved in down the street. I think that the proviso that noone take any action against the sick mother fuckers is a joke and really an insult to all parents.

In response to your question, is our society to blame?, Do we encourage such behaviors? To me the answer is still NO. Society can never assimilate certain psychologically screwed up individuals. I don't care why they are fucked up, brain chemistry, genetics, past history of abuse whatever. The fact is........they are fucked up. They are an entirely different breed than "normal" humans. Society cannot be held responsible for every mental quirk of the individuals on this earth.

I am personally opposed to giving the police and the justice system broader powers to deal with these people. Unless you grant the power to the courts to say in very limited circumstances that certain individuals are not human and need to be destroyed. However, I think that parents, friends and relatives should be given special consideration when they solve the problem on their own.

Sorry, but unfortunately I can visualize what you are saying about seeing that smile. If you found the "perpetrator" just as he had finished with the little girl in question what would YOU do Lon?
