Absom, a bit about advertising dollars. What you say about appealing to older viewers, because they have the bucks, of course makes sense to us. However, I saw a news magazine show about older script writers, and their inability to get work. These are people who leave off their resumes the fact that they wrote scripts for M*A*S*H or Mary Tyler Moore because it dates them. Hollywood is only interested in writers who can "relate" to the younger demographics. It is assumed that writers in their 30s and 40s can't relate to the 18-25 crowd, and that is who the advertisers most want to catch.

The current thinking among advertisers, and hence what Hollywood has to follow, is that older viewers are already set in their product choices. We have made up our minds, so why bother trying to sell us? However, the younger audience hasn't made that choice yet. They are more easily influenced by advertising. Dunno how valid that thinking is, but that's pretty much it. That's why shows like Diagnosis Murder, aimed at an older audience, are few and far between.

OH! Off topic, but an interesting observation. During the Super Bowl, Pepsi's new commercials will NOT feature the little girl who lip sincs (badly). Apparently some of their focus groups referred to her as "that annoying little girl"! ROTFL!!

I may be a distinct aberration, but there is nothing in this world that I would consider worse than the lack of change. Any new product that comes along, I will try immediately. Now I am not so egotistical as to think I am unique in this point, so there must be loads more people my age or there about who are not stuck in some dark hole of commercialism.

The problem in the entertainment industry is one of youth oriented blindness. Those 'old people' shows they kept showing like "Murder She Wrote" and "Diagnosis Murder" did NOT appeal to me or any one else I am acquainted with in my age group.

Sorry to appear grouchy about the subject, but I have given up Network TV this past year since we switched to satellite. Viva la choice!

Yeah, Network tv generally sucketh. I bounce mostly between SciFi, History,A&E, Discovery. Not much PBS though. Actually, lately when I get the change (not easy with my TV addicted housemate) I turn the thing off.

Concerning the Pepsi Girl: There was discussion at Televine about how annoying she is. I decided to see what I could find out about her on the Net and discovered she is held in great derision by many people. There is something about the way she is presented that she comes across as very annoying. I wonder why the ad company, or Pepsi, didn't pick up on that before it got to be such a widespread feeling. I hope the child isn't harmed by the derision.

Concerning the hiring of youthful writers and actors:

When I wondered what it is about the actors on the Jules Verne series on SCIFI now that strikes me as wrong, I realized that they are all pretty and young people, they come across as unseasoned and pallid. Surely there are actors out there who have some character in their faces and presentation.

That poor little Pepsi girl was just plain spooky. I think it did have a lot to do with the poor job of lip-syncing and that awful gutteral vice they dubbed in. On the other hand, I do kind of miss the Taco Bell dog although the commercial had probably run it's course.

Ah, yes, there certainly are, BMat. The bigwigs in TV (read a derisive tone here) don't think they have any appeal to a younger audience, and that's who they're aiming at. For an example of the youth-oriented drivel available, watch Black Scorpion. If you can stomach it. Anyway, us old f@rts apparently don't count anymore. :-P
