You need a longer scope than 1 year man...plus, the situations are different--you want to compare Shannon's rookie year as a HC to Fulmer's 15th? The Canes went 5-7 with some of the worst seniors talent-wise (good kids though, make no mistake--Coker's kids in a nutshell) in Shannon's 1st year. In Fulmer's 15th, he went 10-4 with Erik Ainge, a young WR corps, a good defense, and what should end up being UT's all-time leading rusher in Arian Foster. Also, not to mention that Fulmer went 5-6 back in 2005, 7 years after being top of the heap in 1998. You're supposed to build off national titles, not digress (and yes, I understand UT was hit hard by injuries that year--but he should have recruited better and had young talent in the wings to do better than 5-6).
It's not about records from 1 year ago, it's more about the direction of the program, and I think UT's mired in mediocrity while Miami's made the right moves to become elite again in both recruiting and on the field. The game looks like it's passed Fulmer by in both regards. They can still draw some talented kids due to some kids that flat out want to come to UT--he's supposed to get those kids. It's the recruiting battles that he's lost to the likes of UGA, UF, Miami, FSU, Bama, Auburn, etc...that are kickin his arse at the moment and taking them where they don't wanna go.
Plus, when those talented kids get there, they're playing in systems that don't fully utilize their strengths as a player & team unit--see the UCLA game as an example--all the zone played in the 2nd half when you were covering in Man D just fine in the 1st half, and abandoning the run for more passing when you've got probably the best weapon on either team in your backfield? Just ridiculous.
Just because I or someone else roots for Miami, and they had a worse record than UT last year, doesn't mean that we can't plainly see the problems inherent in Knoxville by keeping Fulmer around for another season. We'd be completely blind if we didn't see it as college football fans, regardless of team loyalties...

no question about it.......we had kyle wright and kirby friggin freeman at qb........are you kidding me? vince lombardi couldnt have won with them
while this is only shannons second year.......i have a feeling if the team doesnt improve from last year hes really going to be roasting next year may not be around long.......but i agree 100% to compare a body of work that consists of one year to 15 years with 14 of it being mired in mediocrity is a piss poor comparison at best

i think its the "direction of the program" thing that gets lost on so many........as canes fans we arent used to mediocrity......we arent very accepting of it because we are used to winning
maybe when you are a fan of a program like the vols who are used to being mediocre 1 championship is enough to buy you an eternity of excuse making and not performing up to expectations........thats the only thing i can think of as to why hes still there
look at their off the field issues over the recent years as well......onbe cant exactly say hes been a shining influence in that regard either......which in some cases would earn him a pass

thats all on coaching........the great pumpkin has made a career of not getting the most from his guys and wasting talent in his system

exactly.......again im not going to pretend that just because im a miami fan that all is rosy and bright when its clearly not.......i do however feel as though we are at least attempting to move in the complete opposite direction to where we were just a few years ago and while it remains to be seen if its the right direction......its not the same course we were on.....so simply by making an attempt to change.....it deserves a chance to work out
if it doesnt i have full confidence in the new AD to make sure that something will be done to get things back on track again
i know there are at least a handful of F$U fans here also.........im sure most of them are smart enough to see that they also have a littany of problems and that booby is on borrowed time and the game has passed his old ass by as well
being loyal to a team doesnt mean sticking your head in the sand of pretending that you have no problems.......especially when there are very glaring issues

Re: UT-UCLA
As far as Fulmer goes, he's in the the same boat with Bowden and Paterno. All of em usually have winning records, all of em usually get to a bowl, and all of em will prolly be where they are until they decide to leave. And as badly as some of y'all may hate these guys, they are still better than 95% of the coaches currently coaching.

Re: UT-UCLA
I am not as bothered that UT lost as much as I am how they lost. I get sick and tired of UT's coaching staff coaching trying not to lose instead of trying to win.
I knew when UT scored with 2 minutes left in the game that UCLA would take the ball down and score a touchdown. I knew Chavis would get in that prevent defense like he always does. I have seen UT blow too many games because of this strategy.
FLA 2000
UGA 2001
UCLA 2008
BAMA 2005
VANDY 2005
SC 2005
LSU 2006
FLA 2006
MEM 1996
ARK 1999
Last year UT got lucky that SC,KY and Vandy missed game winning field goals or those would have been choke job.

Re: UT-UCLA
I don't really know how you can include the 06' UF game, its not like the Gators went down and scored in the final minute or 2, that was just a good hard fought game.
-
Re: UT-UCLA
I was at that game, UT was up 20-7 and tried to sit on it the entire second half. I think there was plenty of time left when UF took the lead.

Re: UT-UCLA
Tennessee doesn't need to get rid of Fulmer. They need to kick Chavis in the arse everytime he gets his "prevent" brainstorm. The only thing a prevent defense prevents is a win. I like Crompton, I think he's a good kid. However, I've watched B.J. Coleman twice in person and he looked much better. I also think Hardesty is twice the running back that Foster is. Tennessee will be fine, and they'll win some games they shouldn't. Same story every year.

Re: UT-UCLA
Yeah I was at that game too

Re: UT-UCLA
Chavis isn't the one responsible for throwing the ball 41 times with an inept QB when his backs were averaging 7 yards per rush....geez, at least lay the blame where it should be laid.
-
Re: UT-UCLA
I lay the blame partially on both. Chavis has a history of putting the D in a zone and try not to lose. Heck a few times they dropped DL into zone coverage. Had they stayed in a stunting D, and a little press coverage the D would have won it for them.
Clawson does take some blame for not staying on the ground. I think too, he wanted to run basic sets and figured they could win without showing everything this past Monday and next week, so they could show some new stuff against Florida. Plus, getting Crompton in the air a little more, was a chance to try and boost his confidence and get a read for his game play. That would be about a C- at best right now. The kid forgot about his mouthpiece till there was 2 minutes left.
