what is a sound? a sound is the movement of sound waves from a sender to a receiver...if a tree is in the woods and it falls...it sends sound waves as far as it will reach, but there isnt a receiver to let the sound waves touch their ear...thus, it does not constitute a sound...in the one example where someone asked "if a boulder fell on someone's leg and they screamed but no one was around to hear it" that does constitute a sound b/c the person sending the sound waves also has the ability to receive them..so he/she acts as a sender and receiver
