Just what i though tall along CEASE drops their lawsuit. UHM...lets see everyone that is fighting consolidation was from small towns, then the 3 on 1 or whatever the plan was and Big Stone loses a school. Allof a sudden CERASE appears goes to the three small towns blaming all of this consolidation on WIse and the small towns buy it. Now it seems to be almost over, they drop the suit BSG has a school and the new plan is to build in BSG and Wise. Interesting and just remember SP you were going to be left alone until you joined with CEASE....I'M just saying.........oh well I predict that JH and BEtty will have a change of heart over all these children being in un air conditioned buildings and they will have to vote for the building of course it will still be DR PErry's fault they just have to do what is right!!!!!!!!!

It is Navy blue with orange and white outlining and it's a "claw mark", like a slash make by a bear claw going through the 'U'... I screwed that up and forgot the "slash" part. I'll add that these aren't official, those were ones that were used in the presentation and are "favorites" I guess you could say - but all subject to change. I also learned that "Union" was picked partly because of the miners in the union around here.

One of the Union logos I saw looked like they should be called the Forgers. They had the U in navy and blue and a Chicago Bears head at the top of the U.

As long as it's not green and orange and split at the bottom I don't believe it will be any problem. Also don't recall Miami's having bear claws through it.

Yeah. Miami doesn't go hardcore after copyright infringement on "The U", as long as it's a distinctly different color scheme and they don't out-and-out rip off the split-U that Miami uses. As long as it's more of a block-U, then they're good. Think the U in the Utah logo, only a bit wider to give for the bear claws/head or whatever.

If they do use the split-U, and it's obvious, then you can bet if Miami hears about it their lawyers will be calling. I would hope whoever's making the logo would have more sense than to rip it off though.

I don't see why Miami would want to go after a high school that wanted to use a similar U anyway. That's really a way to disenfranchise and tick off possible recruits, especially from a school that has produced two players that they would go after. I can see it from another college team but not a high school.

It's not a thing about offending a HS--it's a thing about copyright law. Miami has that split-U copyrighted. If it is printed on any HS apparel and sold, and it's obvious that a copyright has been infringed on, then they'll take legal action. That's the whole reason why they copyright it (just like all college do w/their logos) so either a) you have to get permission or b) you don't make money off of their property. I will stress too that IF they ask UM for permission and get it, there's not a problem at all.

And it's not just Miami--FSU has had copyright claims against schools before. UVA-Charlottesville pushed for UVA-Wise's latest logo change on the basis of copyright infringement.

It's all moot at this point though--we haven't seen what Union's "U" looks like yet. It may be far removed from what Miami's copyrighted logo looks like.

It's the same premise as if one of the new schools wanted to call themselves something like "Vista Trails" or something, and decided they wanted to use VT's logo, just w/different colors. Don't think for a second that VT wouldn't claim copyright infringement and get that stopped. It's a business decision on their part...nothing personal.

Really though, its extremely rare for a school, or professional team to go after a HS for something like that though.

It is, no doubt about that. I'm just saying that whoever makes the Union HS logo needs to be careful and go out of their way to make sure there's no copyright infringement. Everything under the sun has been done before, pretty much--but don't rip it off wholesale w/o covering your butt on copyrights.

We've discussed it here in this thread, but I don't think anything will ever come up--just saying that it could given the right circumstances.

On that page you linked to, there's a bunch of examples that could be considered copyright if pursued, but I'd say it's either vague enough not to merit the time/money for the Universities, or the HS asked permission. Check out the Water Valley Blue Devils and the Amite Christian Rebels...WVU and Bama could probably go at them if they wanted, but probably won't. Either that, or permission was granted.

When it comes to helmets and such I wonder who would face the most legal action. The school, or the creator of the decals for the helmets? Also, maybe the companies used already have copyright licenses to such items. Who knows.
