Re: Question

Like someone already said, VA is an at will state- meaning unless you sign a contract, your employer can fire you for any reason (unless its discrimination) or no reason and you can quit for any reason or no reason. I doubt you can force them to pay you any "lost wages" but it never hurts to ask.

Re: Question

True.
They can fire you if they dont like the way you parted your hair. I say go back to work and hang in there.

I'm a firm believer in hard work and self sufficiency.
Many people really have the wrong idea when it comes to work. Employers aren't there to benefit the employee. Employers are going to do things employees don't like. That's the way it works in the real world. There are too many attitudes out there reeking of "the world owes me."

It doesn't matter if you "like" your employer now - few people while in college already have their dream jobs.

Be the bigger man!
Just think - you could be flipping burgers instead.

I know all about that. I hate my job. I work 7 days a week and miss out on every hobby & activity I used to do. But a person has to do what a person has to do until better things come along.

Re: Question

The same thing happened to me when I first started at Sykes. The only difference is, I had negative points when I started college. They didnt fix my schedule until it was a month into classes. So I racked up some big time points as well, but I was no where close to getting fired. You have to admit that the Sykes attendence policy is VERY fair, and Castle we both know that BOTH of us has took advantage of that very policy. Some of the things we have got away with...haha

Though Ive learned that if you ever want anything done at Sykes, you go straight to whatever you need. You need a PT schedule, go to the POC office and tell whoever makes the schedules. If they cant get it approved for you, go over them and talk to a CSM. They always get it fixed one way or another. Its an open door policy. TM's are very unreliable in those situations because they have so much CRAP to keep up with.

I don't want to be an a s s, but this post reads like some pro-union propoganda. Unions actually started out as a good thing but have turned into anything but. All you hear them talkin about when they come in is how they are gonna get you more money, nevermind that the company will close and move elsewhere, I am not talking coal mines since you can't move them you have to be where the coal is. My point being is there wouldn't be a job there at all if the company wasn't there to make money for the company not the employee's.

I don't know the numbers or anything but I would like to know the record of longevity for union versus non-union mines in the area, and how many union mines were closed due to profit loss and were leased out and reopened as non-union.

Good post- its amazing how some people approach the whole work issue. I've been working for a judge for a month now and have observed several cases. It is amazing how many people during child support hearings when asked, "why don't you work?" actually state that they don't work or can't get a job because "they want to start at the top."

Re: Question

I had an ex brother-in-law that went without work for the first 3 years of his marriage for that very reason. He refused to take anything "beneath him" (and of course he didn't even bother to further his education beyond high school either). And manual labor? No.. can't do that. Too hard.
So they lived with his in-laws while his wife worked full time and he played games all day (and she came home and did the house work, the bills, groceries, etc.).

Another favorite offered by women all across SWVA: I can't work because I have children (I especially love it when the kids are school age kids).

[/ QUOTE ] This sounds like someone who never worked a dangerous job. Anyone who ever thought they worked for anyone other than THEMSELVES is badly mistaken. It all has to get along and everybody wants a fair share. Some are dumb enough to think it is good for the CEO of a company to keep the same wages and move a company out of this country, while dumping their retirees. It is like even if a law was written when a world-wide economy was never dreamed of, it is still ok to use the same rules. Tax our own folks to keep up the standards for polloution control, and all the freebies, but if the same cash comes into to the country as pure profit, then it isn't covered. The waste can be dumped anyway, they people can be treated anyway.

Re: Question

You know something is wrong, when American companies relocate for cheap labor, and then import into their own country.
As far as this goes. If your in college and just need the money and Sykes will work with you. Do it. If they won't then you need to look elsewhere.
In the long run the education you get will be better and will pay for more.
If you can afford, to not have the hassle, look elsewhere. If not then make the most of it, until it don't work. You won't be the first to leave Sykes or the last. It's from what i hear the revolving door.
And honestly a shame. They need to address some of their problems and fix them.
Problem is. Their just here for the money. To some upper level at Sykes, their in cheap labor land.

Like NI Industries in Duffield, stayed till the group got near the 10th year mark. And Norris before them. Work till I die, it is easy for me as I'm crazy you see. And I can furnish references.
