just an update for those who wanted to keep up with where I am on my journey to become a college basketball coach, if you're not interested, no problem at all just know of a couple people who would be

anyway, I am starting month 4 on my job as a student assistant for the men's team here. we are looking great at times, and very young at other times. some of the guys are relying on their success from last year and thinking it will simply carry over to this year. the good news is that coach greenberg won't let that happen. we took the guys up to georgetown last saturday to scrimmage them. here's a couple of my thoughts on georgetown:

- their starting 5 were Chris Wright, Austin Freeman, Jessie Sapp, DaJuan Summers and Greg Monroe

- this is a smaller Georgetown team than many will be used to, Monroe is actually a PF but plays the 5 spot for this group...he is skilled and passes the ball extremely well and has a nice jumper out to about 16-17ft...he won't blow up the stat sheet this year, but he will be a great player for them

- Freeman isn't overly athletic and will more than likely be defending the 3 spot for Georgetown, but he does enough on the offensive end to make him a threat

overall it was a good scrimmage, i think that once all the scores were combined from each session of the scrimmage that VT lost by 3pts, but you can't really take a whole lot of that to heart for either side...both sides were trying to mix their lineups to see who works well with who and both sides were trying to run some things offensively and defensively that they won't necessarily run during the course of the year

one month from now I will put together my resume and send it out to 75 schools across the nation, hopefully I'll get some return on that and then in the Spring when jobs open up I will be able to have my foot in the door. Making that resume will be an interesting process as I'm unsure on a lot of things that will go into the final product, but hopefully that will come in time.

The JV team I am coaching is 7-0, we won our first tournament at JMU 1 1/2 weeks ago. The varsity moved up two of my top 3 players so I'm having to adjust my line-ups accordingly and that's something that will be a process. It is like having your top players out for the year with injuries, but at least I get to practice that type of situation.

My JV team plays Fork Union Military Academy tomorrow. They have 8 guys who have either committed or have offers from D1 schools including 4 who have offers/committed to high majors. So that will obviously be a test for us. We also go back to JMU this weekend to play 7 more games, and if we come out of this week 14-1 or 13-2 I wouldn't be terribly upset, but losses suck regardless of who they're against.

I always tell anyone that I talk to when they ask about college coaching that college basketball coaches have the job security of a convicted felon

haha I love the game and everything associated with it, but it's something you have to live with, and now that security has been less and less for even Div. II and Div. III coaches as well as mid-level assistants...it won't be an easy road, that's for sure...and I'm sure I'll fail twice as much as I succeed until I can find some place to get my shot, then just do my job and hope the extraordinary circumstances are working for me rather than against me

for now, I'll bide my time and do my entry level work and try to keep my name fresh on their minds
