To a deist, God manifest himself through nature...from wikipedia (which I know isn't the most reliable source in the world) but this is a pretty concise definition: "Deists typically reject supernatural events (prophecy, miracles) and divine revelation prominent in organized religion, along with holy books and revealed religions that assert the existence of such things. Instead, deists hold that religious beliefs must be founded on human reason and observed features of the natural world, and that these sources reveal the existence of one God or supreme being."
Just because G. Washington spoke of God...that doesn't mean Jehovah, Yahweh, or whoever you are referring to when you say the word "God"...he was a deist...and deists believe in "God" but not necessiarily a "Christian" God anymore than the name of God from some other religion.
