US officials have never publicly acknowledged plans to assassinate Putin, or any other Russian or Soviet leaders. However, Newsweek reported in September 2022 that US defense officials had discussed a “decapitation strike” if Russia used nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied that such an option has ever been on the table, arguing that there are no targets in the neighboring country for such a weapon.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov interpreted the allegations of a “decapitation strike,” as “a threat to assassinate the head of the Russian state.”

“If such ideas are really being considered, those involved must carefully think about the possible consequences,” he said at the time.
In May 2023, Russia accused Ukraine – which has received massive aid from the US – of attempting to assassinate Putin in the Kremlin using a drone strike, although the aircraft was neutralized.
While Ukraine has denied any involvement, Blinken said at the time that Washington had no prior warning of the raid, adding that Kiev was free to defend itself in any way it saw fit.

US President Donald Trump has said Microsoft is among the companies considering the purchase of TikTok’s US subsidiary, media have reported.
TikTok briefly shut down in the US last weekend after parent company ByteDance missed a January 19 deadline to divest of its American operations, as mandated by a Supreme Court ruling over national security concerns.
Hours later, Trump announced a 90-day extension and proposed a plan for the US acquisition of a majority stake in TikTok.
Asked by reporters on board Air Force One about Microsoft’s potential acquisition of TikTok on Monday, Trump said, “I would say yes,” adding that there is “a lot of interest in TikTok. There’s great interest in TikTok.”
Trump mentioned that other companies were also interested in acquiring TikTok but did not disclose their names.
“I like bidding wars because you make your best deals,” he said.
If it goes through, the deal with Microsoft would place the video-sharing app under the control of one of America’s most valuable tech companies, which has been expanding aggressively into areas including artificial intelligence and gaming.
Microsoft did not respond to media requests for comment.
TikTok, with about 170 million US users, has attracted significant interest from American investors, following the government's demand that it be US-owned or face expulsion from the market.
AI startup Perplexity AI has proposed a merger with TikTok’s US operations, suggesting that the government could acquire up to a 50% stake in the new entity following an initial public offering. Additionally, billionaire Frank McCourt, former owner of the MLB franchise Los Angeles Dodgers, has made a formal offer to acquire TikTok’s US assets.

Two decades ago, on January 23, 2005, Viktor Yushchenko was inaugurated as president of Ukraine. He was the first Ukrainian leader to rise to power through mass protests – this happened after the Western-backed ‘Orange Revolution’, which shook the country in November 2004.
Yushchenko had initially lost the presidential election, but his supporters set up a tent city in central Kiev and blocked the government district.
Foreign NGOs played a significant role in these events. The direct orchestrators of that color revolution included the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and its affiliates, the Soros Foundation, the International Republican Institute, the Eurasia Foundation, and several other foreign entities.
NGOs that directly supported Yushchenko and were involved in monitoring elections in Ukraine were foreign funded. In 2003, the International Renaissance Foundation, financed by Hungarian tycoon George Soros, spent nearly $1.5 million on projects related to the presidential election. Some of them successfully conducted exit polls and effectively presented to the public the idea that the victory of then-Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich had been the result of widespread election fraud.
Those who seized the government district in the capital were demanding the annulment of the election results. In response, the authorities accused the protesters of attempting a coup. With neither side willing to compromise, Yanukovich ultimately agreed to a third round of voting, which resulted in Yushchenko’s victory.
Ukrainian society was divided in two, and Yushchenko’s policy laid the groundwork for a significant political crisis and the eventual war.

A Ukrainian defense manufacturer has suggested dispersing military production across civilian sites, including to school facilities, to protect its weapons-making operations from Russian strikes. Aleksey Polonchuk proposed that students assemble drones in school workshops as part of a decentralized production strategy.
Polonchuk, who owns a defense company specializing in electronic warfare equipment, made his remarks in an interview with Dignitas Fund, a nonprofit focused on raising funds for Kiev’s military. The interview was published on the NGO’s YouTube channel on Wednesday.
To safeguard drone production from Russian long-range attacks, Polonchuk emphasized the need to scatter manufacturing locations across the country.

“Production should be distributed across the country, hidden in basements–and thus scaled up. Assemble FPV drones of approved designs during labor lessons in schools. The whole country assembles what works, what is approved,” he stated.
According to Polonchuk, this decentralized approach would protect drone manufacturing from detection and destruction. He warned that large-scale production sites are vulnerable because “if you build a workshop where 60 drones are simultaneously produced, it will quickly be hit.”
The remarks come just days after unverified images emerged online showing what appeared to be a decentralized drone assembly site in Kiev. The photos showed stacks of FPV drones hidden inside Domino’s pizza boxes to facilitate covert transportation between production locations.
