I don’t know exactly why he picked me, but he watched my YouTube videos and loved them. He had his choice of guitar players, but I came in and played the ‘Beat It’ solo for him. Afterward he was so happy he got up and grabbed my arm and started walking up and down the stage area with me. He said, ‘Can you play once for me?’ and hired me that night. I wish he was still around. He made me believe in myself more, and I learned so much. Going into it, I thought it would be all about playing guitar solos. But the majority of it was playing chords and funky rhythms.

Quite honestly I don't know why a magazine can't put out a top 100 female guitarists. I think it would be an feat. A list of 12 seems tokenistic. Also I don't believe that that list should be North American exclusive. I love Mia form Crucified Barbara, Katie White, Ana Popovic and numerous Euro guitarsts.. Canada alone has 100 great female guitarists. Actually more. My compliments to the other posters who name many excellent players.

The list is pretty good for the most part. They have most of the important and influential female electric guitarists especially the first 4. However, the exclusion of Bonnie Raitt is a huge flub. They should have also included Susan Tedeschi and Leni Stern.

I have my problems with "The "great" Kat", her attitude is just too overblown, she should shut the f**k up and just player her guitar properly, too much speed gets boring. Speed gets more noticed if there is also slowness, so why not use the female feeling to spice up the hard music? I always prefered Lita in the 80ies because she plays with feeling and does not pose with too much technics.

THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA.com) – A security director at a senior living facility has been arrested on suspicion of burglarizing several residences within the complex.
Michael Glen South, 57, of Thousand Oaks, is facing felony residential burglary, elder abuse and possession of stolen property charges.
Investigators received information over the weekend about South possibly possessing items from the University Village Retirement Living facility in Thousand Oaks.
“An investigation revealed that South was involved in numerous burglaries and thefts from residents of the complex. Due to South’s position at the complex, he had key access to the senior citizen homes,” the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
A search warrant was subsequently issued at South’s home, where authorities found items such as guns, jewelry, medication and other household items, according to the department.
“Any time someone you know turns out to be a ‘bad guy’, that’s a bad feeling,” resident Gerald Friss said. “I’m disappointed. I would not have wanted Michael to end like this.”
South was one of only two people who had accessibility to the entire facility.
“His actions happened recently, we acted quickly once we knew about it, and removed him, as a threat, away from our community,” Executive Director Ryan Exline said.
Officials say some of the items helped them locate additional victims.
Anyone with information was asked to contact Det. Matt Theobald at (805)371-8396.

In Reply to: Buy Radian to get Emilar posted by KlausF on December 6, 2003 at 10:22:19:
The Jonas Renkus designed Emilar EC 320 continues in production by both Radian and POE. The diaphragm geometry and voice coil dimensions are identical.
Radian was set up in 1988 when it seemed that Emilar would fall over due to an INS demand to pay a heap in unpaid back taxes. At this stage the company was foreign owned with the owner's 21 year old son playing CEO. Cash was flown from London and taxes paid. Emilar continued until its new teabag CEO abandoned the failing business in 1995 and flew back to London. Emilar owed taxes again. The place was locked by the Sheriff .
Ken Brown of the future POE borrowed the amount to pay the back taxes and the Sheriff opened the premesis to him. This enabled the abandoned assets to be removed. However the late Algis Renkus had a lean on some of what had been taken and these were returned to his possession after legal threats. The 320 diaphragm tooling currently used by POE is not Emilar's original. POE made this anew from the purloined drawings.
So POE's blurb that it is "the company that has the Emilar technology, drawings, tooling and personnel" is partly true but don't ask how these assets came into their possession. POE uses one lady part-time from Emilar staff to assemble diaphragms. Radian started business with some others.
Radian's Richard Kontrimas and POE's Ken Brown do not communicate - no agreements, just animosity.
Jonas Renkus knew well how to design and construct more robust yet better sounding drivers and diaphragms. Neither business would exist without that basis.
I spent much time over 17 years working with Jonas whose background came from LTV/Altec and he was John Hilliard's right-hand man. That first hand basis now lies with me. I did Radian's original engineering designs and they were implemented by Emilar's production engineer whom Radian had hired. I came up with the Radian name and I am the owner of the Emilar trademark. At this stage Emilar sells horns only but still has the full set of production drawings and access to the original draftsman.
Cheers to all Emilar technology listeners; Emilar, Radian or POE.
Robert Grunberg.

As 'Bowtie' suspects, Jonas Renkus was at Altec. He was directly under Hilliard as Lansing had been twenty-five years earlier. In Anaheim, he developed for Ling-Temco-Vought the symbiotic construction using kapton for the compliance and coil former. He told me that the marketing people at Altec degraded the top end response because they wanted an intermediate performance between 290 and 288 responses and power capability. This is illustrated by the thicker aluminum locating ring on the 291 diaphragm that places the aluminum diaphragm further from the phasing plug.
Jonas pioneered the use of silicone elastomeric compliances in LTV's air modulators and used this innovation to avoid compliance fatigue in Altec's 594B 4-inch coil driver that was an alnico reissue of the WE 594A but are even rarer because the government was the purchaser. Most went to White Sands, NM.In the early seventies Hilliard and Renkus had a consulting business on Main Street in Orange and from here they introduced the elastomer surround into smaller format drivers. They established a joint venture project with Bud Bennett of Quad-8 to commercialize a new cinema system. I still have Jonas's prototype HF driver from this project.
The elastomer compliance and the drawings and prototype of what was to become the EC175 driver was the founding basis for Renkus Corp in 1974. The alnico EA model was prompted by Dukane; they marketed Coral drivers from Japan. With investment Renkus Corp became Emilar Corp (Mohageri, Lindsey, Renkus). Harold Lindsey was one of the Ampex founders and had an interest in horn systems from Ampex's 1950s foray into cinema sound using licensed JBL loudspeaker designs.
Emilar's 1970s diaphragm production featured elastomer compliances and this gave fatigue-proof reliability over the the prior art used by Altec, JBL, Coral with embossed Harrison-type complances. Also the resonances in the top octave exhibited by the embossed surround were absent in the emilar drivers but these elastomer diaphragm assemblies were expensive to produce.
I have the original correspondance betweem Jonas Renkus and Harro Heinz that I have shown to Steve Schell. In 1979, after Renkus-Heinz was producing the elastomer featuring 1800 and 3300 drivers and they were being agressively marketed by Algis Renkus, Jonas and I developed the triple lamination construction that resulted in models 1801 and 3301.
Both Jonas and then Algis left R-H and returned to a failing emilar in 1981. There the expensive elastomer construction was abandoned for the triple lamination technique and the 314 and 320 drivers were developed and produced. There was litigation from Heinz but he dropped the charges during the hearings. Subsequently this construction technique was adopted by B&C in Italy.
When emilar was abandoned by its British owned holding company E3MC in 1995, rent arrears were paid to the sheriff by Ken Brown and the locked factory was opened to him and the assets were plundered. There followed litigation threats from Algis Renkus to Plus One as Algis had been financing the company and taking leans on assets. I bought these from Algis' widow in 1997, incliuding the emilar trademark.
Thank you Bowtie for your perceptive admiration of Jonas' innovative work; there are few of us who recognise and acknowledge this. Innovative emilar branded drivers might appear next year with implementations of US patent 6,744,899; the slot aperture driver. I can be emailed at robertgrunberg at bigpond.kom.
